Notes: Abstract. Apple snails (Pomacea paludosa) and eggs and nestlings of anhingas (Anhinga anhinga) and white ibises (Eudocimus albus) were collected in Palm Beach County, Florida from 1989–1991 and analyzed for organochlorine pesticide (OCP) residues. Pesticide residues were not detected in the apple snails. Residues of DDT, with maximum concentrations of 1,200 μg/kg wet weight occurred in 50% of the ibis samples but were not present in the anhinga samples. DDE occurred in 100% of avian samples at concentrations up to 2,100 μg/kg and was at significantly greater concentration in the anhingas. Dieldrin was not detected in the first year of the three-year study, but occurred in the majority of avian samples in the last two years at concentrations up to 610 μg/kg. Additionally, residues of seven pesticides and Aroclor® 1016 were detected infrequently at very low concentrations in the birds. While it is possible that nearby municipal solid waste landfills were the source of the pesticides, no corroborating evidence was found to support this speculation.

Notes: Abstract The coronal response to six solar X-ray flares has been investigated. At a time coincident with the projected onset of the white-light coronal mass ejection associated with each flare, there is a small, discrete soft X-ray enhancement. These enhancements (precursors) precede by typically ∼20 m the impulsive phase of the solar flare which is dominant by the time the coronal mass ejection has reached an altitude above 0.5 R ⊙. We identify motions of hot X-ray emitting plasma, during the precursors, which may well be a signature of the mass ejection onsets. Further investigations have also revealed a second class of X-ray coronal transient, during the main phase of the flare. These appear to be associated with magnetic reconnection above post-flare loop systems.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we present the results of an analysis of a set of observations in the C iv 1548 Å line obtained on 27 March, 1980 by the Solar Maximum Mission Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter (UVSP). The observed region covers an area of 240 × 240 arc sec and includes a system of bright loops at the limb. Simultaneous spectroheliograms and dopplergrams of the loop region allowed us to derive empirical velocity and emission-measure profiles on individual loops. These have been compared with the theoretical profiles for: (i) a steady-state loop model with siphon flow, (ii) a steady state loop model with downflow in both legs maintained by continuous mass addition near the loop summit, (iii) a non-steady loop model with downflow, whereby the initial plasma density decays exponentially with time (similarity solution). None of these simple models is capable of simultaneously representing both the velocity and emission measure profiles; thus we still lack a realistic description of cool loop dynamics. New observations aimed at determining such parameters as the loop lifetime are considered crucial for providing the necessary constraints for future modeling efforts.

Notes: Abstract TRACE is a single-instrument solar mission that will be put into a Sunsynchronous polar orbit and will obtain continuous solar observations for about 8 months per year. It will collect images of solar plasmas at temperatures from 104 to 107 K, with 1-arcsec spatial resolution and excellent temporal resolution and continuity. With such data, we expect to gain a new understanding of many solar and stellar problems ranging from coronal heating to impulsive magnetohydrodynamic phenomena.

Notes: Abstract The Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) of the SOLAR-A mission is designed to produce X-ray movies of flares with excellent angular and time resolution as well as full-disk X-ray images for general studies. A selection of thin metal filters provide a measure of temperature discrimination and aid in obtaining the wide dynamic range required for solar observing. The co-aligned SXT aspect telescope will yield optical images for aspect reference, white-light flare and sunspot studies, and, possibly, helioseismology. This paper describes the capabilities and characteristics of the SXT for scientific observing.
