Notes: Summary A consecutive series of 98 patients with intracranial aneurysms subjected to surgery with the aid of an operating microscope is presented. Of the eighty Botterell grade 1-2-3 patients only two died, fiftysix made an excellent recovery, fifteen a good, and seven a fair recovery. The problem of Botterell grade 4–5 patients is discussed.

Notes: Summary 206 patients with Parkinson's disease have been treated with oral L-DOPA for periods ranging from three to twelve months. Marked or very marked improvement of bradykinesia, rigidity and tremor occurred respectively in 58.3%, 34.7% and 15% of the cases at the 3rd month of treatment; in 70.8%, 47.7% and 20% at the 6th month (80 cases); in 88%, 64.4% and 16.2% at the 9th month (34 cases). The degree of independence gained in overall behavioural performance has been recorded at three-monthly intervals and reported for the various forms of Parkinsonism (idiopathic 133 cases; arteriosclerotic 39 cases; postencephalitic 34 cases). About 78% of the patients experienced side-effects; all of them were reversible and not very important.

Notes: Abstract The present study deals with 15 cases of choroid plexus papilloma, out of approximately 500 cases of brain tumors observed in children up to 16 years old. Several features are considered, including clinical symptoms and signs—mostly related to increased intracranial pressure—radiological diagnosis, pathology and surgical treatment, and results. Surgery may be radical in most cases, with the exception of histologically malignant papillomas. The management results are usually satisfactory. An adequate choice of surgical approach is mandatory and surgical technique should be meticulous, also in order to avoid the risk of intraoperative tumoral seeding.

Notes: Summary 1. Stimulation of the anterior nucleus in anesthetized cats and man induces slowing or arrest of respiration. The effect upon the blood pressure in cats is variable, though a depressor effect is frequently observed. 2. Stimulation of the anterior nucleus in unanesthetized cats produces a “reaction of alertness” (the head is raised, the eyes are opened, the animal looks around and starts to walk), probably by activating hypothalamic mechanisms. 3. These reactions persist in cats after ablation of the cingular gyrus and of the fornix. 4. The inhibition of respiration observed on stimulation of the cingular gyrus is not prevented by elimination of the anterior nucleus. Efferent impulses from the cingular gyrus seem to reach the lower centers partly by a pathway coursing outside the anterior nucleus and partly by fibers synapsing in this nucleus. 5. Bilateral lesions of the anterior nuclei in cats produce a brief state of catalepsy followed by a transient period of reduced reactivity to threatening or painful stimuli.

Notes: Abstract The research concerned the effect of notch severity on the fatigue behaviour of series of rubber-modified glassy polymers, consisting of a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer with different amounts of an olefin rubber. Tests were conducted under displacement control and two different loading conditions. Both stages of fatigue lifetimes, that is, fracture initiation and crack propagation, were examined. It was observed that the initial notch severity determines the duration of the crack-initiation stage, while crack propagation does not depend on it. The crack velocity appears to be controlled by the maximum applied stress intensity factor, and the correlation does not depend on the rubber content. The results obtained have been interpreted by considering three different zones in the specimen during the fracture process: a far-field viscoelastic continuum, a process zone and a failure zone.
