    Elevated concentrations of the small stress protein HSP27 in rat renal tumors (1997)

    Notes: Abstract The expression of two small stress proteins, αB crystallin and the 27-kDa heat shock protein (HSP27), was studied quantitatively and immunohistochemically in normal kidney and renal tumors in rats. Levels of αB crystallin in renal cell tumors tended to be higher than in normal kidney (P = 0.07), but with a wide range of values, whereas they were significantly lower in mesenchymal tumors (P 〈 0.0001). In contrast, HSP27 concentrations in both renal cell (mean ± SD: 1790 ± 940 ng/mg protein,n = 15) and mesenchymal (1260 ± 1080 ng/mg protein,n = 10) tumors were significantly higher than the normal kidney value (142 ± 30 ng/mg protein,n = 10,P 〈 0.0001). A positive correlation was found between αB crystallin and HSP27 levels limited to the renal cell tumor case (Pearson's correlation coefficient,r = 0.68,P 〈 0.01). Immunohistochemistry revealed the loops of Henle to be positive for αB crystallin, whereas HSP27 staining was positive in glomerular and interstitial vascular walls and epithelial cells of proximal and distal tubules. Positive immunostaining for αB crystallin was demonstrated in six of nine renal cell tumors (67%) studied and for HSP27 in all of the nine cases (100%).

    Notes: Abstract Detrusor dysfunction does not recover in some patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) even after prostate resection. ‘We studied the functional restoration of the rat bladder after release of short- or long-term outflow obstruction. Bladder function was assessed by in vivo infusion cystometry and an in vitro organ bath technique. There were no significant differences in bladder weight and contractile strength induced by stimuli in detrusor muscle strips from obstructed rats and age-matched control rats. After short-term obstruction the whole bladder pressure generated in vitro by field stimulation, bethanechol, ATP, and KCl completely recovered to control levels. In contrast, after long-term obstruction, the whole bladder pressure in response to field stimulation remained significantly lower than in controls. Infusion cystometry variables, including the pressure at which micturition was induced, maximal voiding pressure, capacity, and residual urine volume, were similar between controls and rats subjected to short-term obstruction. However, the maximal voiding pressure after long-term obstruction was significantly less than that of controls.

    Notes: Abstract Composition dependence of properties of Sb2Te3−x Se x in the range 0⩽x〈3 were studied using differential thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction. Sb2Te3−x Se x form solid solution for 0〈x⩽1.25 and 2.75⩽x〈3. A systematic study of crystallization temperature in Sb2Te3−x Se x (0⩽x⩽2.75) thin films prepared by flash evaporation was carried out. In preliminary experiments for some compositions, more than 103 repetitions between amorphous and crystalline states were attained by the application of electric pulses.

    Notes: Abstract The clinical usefulness of an auxiliary pad-weighing test to supplement the 60-min pad-weighing test, which has been recommended by the International Continence Society, and the patient's impression about the amount of urine loss are reported. Our use of the 60-min test revealed that 134 (53%) of 253 patients lost more than 2.1 g/h of urine and 119 (47%) lost less than 2.0 g/h. Our auxiliary test was indicated in 153 patients who lost urine of less than 5.0 g/h. This test involved jumping 20 times with legs apart and rope-skipping 60 times. The use of this additional test increased the detection rate of urinary incontinence (more than 2.1 g/h) from 53% (134/253) to 75% (191/253). The patients' subjective impression was in accordance with the objective amount of urine loss in approximately half the cases. However, those patients whose leakage was less than 10.0 g/h claimed more often than other groups that their loss was less than usual. On the other hand, the patients with more than 10.1 g/h, tended to describe their loss as being overestimated.

    Notes: Summary We evaluated various immunologic parameters in patients with papillary and follicular carcinomas of the thyroid gland. Our studies included examinations of peripheral blood lymphocytes and skin reactions to selected antigens. Preoperative peripheral blood tests were found to be normal except for an elevated percentage of IgG · Fc+ T-cells (Tγ). Skin reactions (phytohemagglutinin, purified protein derivative) were greater preoperatively than postoperatively. In postoperative cases without tumor recurrence, absolute numbers of T-cells and lymphocytes were reduced. OK-432 is a biologic response modifier of a streptococcal preparation and was used as immunotherapy in postoperative patients. This therapy seemed to augment the absolute numbers of T-cells and lymphocytes as well as purified protein derivative skin reactions in the patients without tumor recurrences. In the patients with postoperative tumor recurrences, there was an abnormal reduction in the percentage of T-cells and in the absolute numbers of T-cells and lymphocytes. OK-432 treatment was not significantly effective in normalizing this reduction.

    Notes: Summary Endocochlear potential (EP) responses to anoxia in immature and mature guinea pigs were compared. The EP decreased much more slowly after anoxia in guinea-pig embryos than in neonates. In many of the embryos, the EP failed to reach any negative voltage. These findings show that the development of the negative component of the EP is a function of the maturation of its positive component.

    Notes: Abstract A young adult patient suddenly began to have episodes of unconsciousness that each lasted for several hours. Brief episodes of lethargy occurred monthly. Biochemical tests disclosed high levels of ammonia and citrulline in the serum. Brain oedema was suggested by CT scan, and optic disc swelling was observed ophthalmoscopically, indicating papilloedema. He died in coma. Deficient activity of argininosuccinate synthetase in the liver was demonstrated. Papilloedema was confirmed histologically. We believe that papilloedema is a serious sign indicating poor prognosis in late-onset citrullinaemia.
