Influence of surface structure and chemical composition on the pitting corrosion of nickel monocrystalsWith the aid of current density potential curves the pitting corrosion of nickel monocrystals (99.45-99.99 Ni) has been investigated in solutions containing 0.5 M each NiC12 and NiSO4, using the pretreatment (chemical and electrochemical polishing) as a discriminating actor. As is shown by experimental results pitting is originated only at dislocations, not, however, at holidays in the passivating layer. This phenomenon is even more pronounced in the presence of impurities which may give rise to the formation of local elements. The low number of pits as compared to dislocation density can be explained in terms of special dislocation configurations required for starting pit formation.

Unter Verwendung von Stromdichte/ Potential-Kurven wurde der Lochfraß an Nickel-Einkristallen (99,45-99,99 Ni) in Lösungen von NiCl2 und NiSO4 (je 0,5 m) untersucht, und zwar in Abhängigkeit von der Vorbehandlung (chemisches und elektrochemisches Polieren). Die Versuchsergebnisse zeigen, daß der Lochfraß durchweg an Versetzungen und nicht an Fehlern der Passivschicht seinen Ausgang nimmt. Dieser Effekt ist noch ausgeprägter in Gegenwart won Verunreinigungen, die zur Bildung von Lokalelementen führen können. Die Tatsache, daß die Zahl der Lochfraßstellen im Vergleich zur Versetzungsdichte sehr gering ist, läßt sich mit Hilfe der Annahme erklären, daß zur Auslösung von Lochfraß spezielle Versetzungskonfigurationen erforderlich sind.
