Notes: Ultrastructural and complex-carbohydrate cytochemical studies were carried out on guinea pig gastric mucosa to assess the histochemical properties of the secretions of different gastric epithelial cells and to investigate the differentiation, origin, and renewal of certain cell types. The observations disclosed heterogeneity or variability of the secretory granules within individual mucigenic cells and zymogen cells. The cytochemical methods also served in characterizing and distinguishing five cell types in the gastric glands, including the isthmus cell, a mucous cell considered comparable to the mucous neck cell, the chief cell, and forms transitional between the isthmus and mucous cells and the mucous and zymogenic cells. The several cell types differed widely in the cytochemical properties of the secretory granules and the apical plasmalemma, and each had a distinctive distribution in the gastric gland. Cytochemical staining observed here provided evidence on synthesis and intracellular metamorphosis of mucous droplets and on formation of glycocalyx.

Notes: The circular dichroism (CD) spectrum of poly[(R)-oxypropylene] in a number of solvents has been measured in the vacuum ultraviolet region. Two CD bands were measured for cyclohexane, acetonitrile, and trifluoroethanol solutions. The CD spectrum was extended to 140 nm and three bands were measured in a 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol solution. The similarity of these four CD spectra in sign, shape, and intensity confirm that poly[(R)-oxypropylene] has similar conformations in all solvents studied, even though the optical rotatory dispersion (ORD) in the visible region is positive for the cyclohexane solution but negative for the alcohol solutions. A Kronig-Kramers transform of the two CD bands observed for the cyclohexane solution accounts for the observed positive ORD spectrum. In contrast, a third large and negative CD band centered below 160 nm is necessary to account for the negative ORD spectra observed for the alcohol solutions. Apparently the anomalous sign variation of the ORD curves observed in the visible region is due to subtle changes in the interplay of a large number of CD bands. Solvent interaction, observed as a blue shift of the first two CD bands for the alcohol solutions, could produce the subtle changes necessary to change the sign of the ORD curve in the visible region. The first two CD bands of poly[(R)-oxypropylene] are tentatively assigned as n—σ* and the third as an n—3s.

Notes: The crystal structure of optically active poly(isopropylethylene oxide) was analyzed by x-ray diffraction. Two molecular chains having twofold screw symmetry pass through an orthorhombic unit cell with parameters a = 12.85 Å, b = 7.52 Å, and c (fiber period) = 5.55 Å and space group P212121-D24. The crystal structure was refined by the constrained least-squares method. The molecular structure consists mainly of ḠTG sequences and is very similar to the (9/4) helical structure in poly(tert-butylethylene oxide).

Notes: Novel examples were presented of the use in polyamide synthesis of active 2-benzothiazolyl dithiolesters for which aminolysis is assisted by a neighboring group. Solution polycondensation of new dithiolesters, 2,2′-(adipoyldithio)bisbenzothiazole and 2,2′-(isophtahloyldithio)bisbenzothiazole, with both aliphatic and aromatic diamines in polar aprotic solvents (N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and hexamethylphosphoramide) took place rapidly at room temperature yielding polyamides with high molecular weight. The interfacial polycondensation in a chloroform-water system was also successful for polyamide formation. S,S′-Di-p-nitrophenyl dithioisophthalate reacted much more slowly toward diamines than the 2-benzothiazolyl dithiolesters. Prior to polymer synthesis, the aminolysis of active monothiolesters was carried out as a model compound study.

Notes: Catalytic actions of various additives were studied in the polycondensation of di(4-nitrophenyl) isophthalate with bis(4-aminophenyl) ether in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, and 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HOBt) was found to be a highly effective catalyst that yielded high-molecular-weight polyamide. In addition to the polycondensation of the 4-nitrophenyl ester, the polymerization of negatively substituted phenyl esters like di(2,4,5-trichlorophenyl) isophthalate was also accelerated by HOBt. For the HOBt-catalyzed aminolysis of esters a bifunctional concerted mechanism that involves an eight-membered transition state was proposed.

Notes: The aminolysis of benzoic mesitoic anhydride was studied in a model system to select the reaction site by steric effect and was found to occur exclusively at the carbonyl group of the benzoic acid. Solution polycondensation of new linear bisanhydrides, terephthalic bis(mesitoic anhydride) and adipic bis(mesitoic anhydride), with aromatic diamines in polar aprotic solvents that contained lithium chloride at room temperature, afforded polyamides with high molecular weight. The interfacial polycondensation in a dichloromethane-water system also successfully yielded polyamides from aliphatic diamines.

Notes: 2-Benzothiazolyl benzoate as a model compound was successfully synthesized from the benzoylation of 2-benzothiazolone under kinetically controlled conditions. The aminolysis of 2-benzothiazolyl benzoate afforded excellent yields of N-substituted benzamides at room temperature in a short reaction time. Solution polycondensations of new active diesters, di-2-benzothiazolyl isophthalate and di-2-benzothiazolyl terephthalate, with aliphatic and aromatic diamines, took place rapidly even at room temperature and yielded polyamides with high molecular weight. The high reactivity of 2-benzothiazolyl benzoate was discussed in relation to intramolecular general base catalysis and the tautomeric effect of the benzothiazolone moiety.

Notes: The aminolysis of N-benzoyl-2-benzothiazolone was studied in model systems and was found to give excellent yields of N-substituted benzamides at room temperature. Solution polycondensation of new bisamides, N,N′-adipoylbis-2-benzothiazolone and N,N′-isophthaloylbis-2-benzothiazolone, proceeded fairly slowly with both aromatic and aliphatic diamines at room temperature to yield polyamides having inherent viscosities up to 1.5. Hexamethylphosphoramide was the best polycondensation medium among some polar aprotic solvents for the formation of high molecular weight polyamides. The high reactivity of the N-acyl-2-benzothiazolones was discussed in relation to excellent leaving nature and intramolecular general base catalysis of the benzothiazolone moiety.
