    Description / Table of Contents: Preparation of 3-Alkoxy-4-alkyl-3-cyclobutene-1,2-dionesSeveral squaric acid esters (2a-g) are prepared. They react with Grignard compounds to give the title compounds (11a-n). 1,2- vs. 1,4-Grignard addition and the benzyl-tolyl rearrangement coincidental with the Grignard reaction are discussed. Hydrolysis of compounds 11 leads to 4-alkyl-3-hydroxy-3-cyclobutene-1,2-diones (12).
    Notes: Verschiedene Quadratsäureester (2a-g) werden dargestellt und mit Grignard-Reagentien in die Titelverbindungen (11a-n) verwandelt. 1,2- gegen 1,4-Grignard-Additionen und die Benzyl-Tolyl-Umlagerung bei der Grignard-Reaktion werden diskutiert. Hydrolyse der Verbindungen 11 liefert 4-Alkyl-3-hydroxy-3-cyclobuten-1,2-dione (12).

    Notes: Cyclopropenone Chemistry, X.  -  2-Alkoxy-3-alkylcyclopropenonesThe title compounds 2, members of a novel class of compounds, were obtained by photochemical decarbonylation of 3-alkoxy-4-alkyl-3-cyclobutene-1,2-diones 1. In addition, new 2,3-dialkoxycyclopropenones (deltic esters 4) were prepared. 2-Alkoxy-3-alkylcyclopropenones 2 are unexpectedly labile towards photolysis, thermolysis, and especially hydrolysis. Therefore, only compounds with bulky residues could be prepared. Acidor base-catalyzed ring opening of 2 yields compounds 6.
