Notes: The late Palaeozoic western Tianshan high-pressure /low-temperature belt extends for about 200 km along the south-central Tianshan suture zone and is composed mainly of blueschist, eclogite and epidote amphibolite/greenschist facies rocks. P–T conditions of mafic garnet omphacite and garnet–omphacite blueschist, which are interlayered with eclogite, were investigated in order to establish an exhumation path for these high-pressure rocks. Maximum pressure conditions are represented by the assemblage garnet–omphacite–paragonite–phengite–glaucophane–quartz–rutile. Estimated maximum pressures range between 18 and 21 kbar at temperatures between 490 and 570 °C. Decompression caused the destabilization of omphacite, garnet and glaucophane to albite, Ca-amphibole and chlorite. The post-eclogite facies metamorphic conditions between 9 and 14 kbar at 480–570 °C suggest an almost isothermal decompression from eclogite to epidote–amphibolite facies conditions. Prograde growth zoning and mineral inclusions in garnet as well as post-eclogite facies conditions are evidence for a clockwise P–T path. Analysis of phase diagrams constrains the P–T path to more or less isothermal cooling which is well corroborated by the results of geothermobarometry and mineral textures. This implies that the high-pressure rocks from the western Tianshan Orogen formed in a tectonic regime similar to ‘Alpine-type’ tectonics. This contradicts previous models which favour ‘Franciscan-type’ tectonics for the southern Tianshan high-pressure rocks.

Notes: Pods of granulite facies dioritic gneiss in the Pembroke Valley, Milford Sound, New Zealand, preserve peritectic garnet surrounded by trondhjemitic leucosome and vein networks, that are evidence of high-P partial melting. Garnet-bearing trondhjemitic veins extend into host gabbroic gneiss, where they are spatially linked with the recrystallization of comparatively low-P two-pyroxene-hornblende granulite to fine-grained high-P garnet granulite assemblages in garnet reaction zones. New data acquired using a Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (LA-ICPMS) for minerals in various textural settings indicate differences in the partitioning of trace elements in the transition of the two rock types to garnet granulite, mostly due to the presence or absence of clinozoisite. Garnet in the garnet reaction zone (gabbroic gneiss) has a distinct trace element pattern, inherited from reactant gabbroic gneiss hornblende. Peritectic garnet in the dioritic gneiss and garnet in trondhjemitic veins from the Pembroke Granulite have trace element patterns inherited from the melt-producing reaction in the dioritic gneiss. The distinct trace element patterns of garnet link the trondhjemitic veins geochemically to sites of partial melting in the dioritic gneiss.

Notes: Summary The paradoxical acute exacerbation of pre-existing chronic idiopathic urticaria accompanied by intense generalized pruritus, facial oedema, and dyspnoea in a 36-year-old-woman 3–4 h after a single oral dose of 10 mg cetirizine (Zyrtec® tablets), suggested the presence of an underlying intolerance reaction. However, a type I hypersensitivity reaction also had to be excluded. Detailed allergy testing supported the view that the patient had suffered an intolerance reaction to cetirizine. This is the third known case of most probably a nonallergic generalized urticaria following the administration of cetirizine, a drug with extensive usage worldwide. However a type I sensitization to cetirizine is indeed possible, as has been demonstrated in this research with the verification of cetirizine-specific IgE antibodies in one of the control sera.

Notes: The incidence of basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) is still increasing, and there is a demand for an easy, effective and selective non-invasive treatment such as topical photodynamic therapy (PDT). Twenty-three patients with 24 nodular BCCs were treated once with delta-aminolaevulinic acid (δ-ALA) PDT (100 mW cm−2, 120 J/cm2) 3 weeks after prior debulking of the BCCs. Three months after PDT, all lesions were surgically excised and histopathologically evaluated for residual tumour. Twenty-two (92%) of the 24 nodular BCCs showed a complete response on clinical and histopathological examination. PDT for superficially abraded nodular BCCs with topically applied δ-ALA and the VersaLight® as light source is an easy, effective and safe therapy, with excellent cosmetic results and no serious side-effects, in cases where non-surgical treatment of BCCs is indicated.

Notes: Skin lesions and clinically normal skin of thirteen patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) were examined, by the use of immunofluorescent techniques, to determine the presence of Ciq, C3, C3 proactivator (C3PA), properdin, immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, and IgM), and fibrin. IgM deposition was present in all thirteen skin lesions and in all eleven normal areas tested, whereas IgG deposition occurred in eleven of the lesions but in only six normal areas. IgA was the least frequently encountered immunoglobulin.C1q deposition occurred in all thirteen skin lesions, and C3 deposition was present in twelve. Seven of nine and eight of eleven clinically normal areas demonstrated C1q and C3 deposition, respectively. Although less intense than C1q and C3 deposition, properdin deposition occurred in eight of the thirteen skin lesions tested but in only two of nine normal areas. C3PA deposition was of greater intensity than was properdin, but was seen in only five lesions and three clinically normal areas. Seven skin lesions and two normal areas also demonstrated fibrin deposition. Although alternate pathway activation is. apparent, our findings suggest that the classical pathway (C1 to C9) is the primary complement pathway involved in slli skin.

Notes: Four patients with a similar eruption of distinct livid plaques are presented. Clinically, the lesions were difficult to diagnose as either lichen planus or lupus erythematosus. However, histological studies with standard and immunofluorescence staining methods were more consistent with lichen planus. In contrast, certain laboratory findings and the clinical course were suggestive of lupus erythematosus.

Notes: We investigated the gettering effect of an evaporated aluminum layer on single crystalline and cast multicrystalline silicon doped with radioactive cobalt-57 by means of radiotracer methods and Mössbauer spectroscopy. We present evidence that aluminum gettering works at high temperatures and transfers the cobalt atoms from the Si bulk to the liquid Al-Si phase. Presumably Al gettering can be explained as a segregation induced process caused by a higher solubility of the metallic impurity in the liquid Al-Si phase compared with that in solid silicon.
