Notes: Abstract. Disjunctive kriging provides minimum variance estimates of properties from non-linear combinations of spatially correlated sample data. In addition it can be used to estimate the conditional probability that some critical threshold is exceeded or that there is a deficit at unsampled points. The technique has been applied to estimate and map the salinity of the soil in the Bet Shean Valley of Israel from measurements of electrical conductivity. In November 1985 the estimated electrical conductivity of the soil exceeded 4 mS per centimetre throughout most of the region, and in only a small area was the probability of salinity less than 0.2. By March 1986 the electrical conductivity had declined everywhere to less than 4 mS per centimetre, and the conditional probability of exceeding this value nowhere exceeded 0.25. Despite the fluctuation in salinity farmers seem to have it under control. The results suggest that winter wheat is likely to germinate poorly in the saltier parts of the region and that lucerne (alfalfa, Medicago sativa) is unlikely to yield its maximum over most of it. Cotton, a summer crop sown in spring, should not suffer.

Notes: In order to obtain the information needed to include Kenya in an international comparison of income and purchasing power, it was necessary to collect some data to supplement the regularly collected statistics. Special collection was particularly important for capital goods prices and rural consumer goods prices. The remainder of the work involved using unpublished data available from the Kenyan Statistical Division, either to obtain additional detail required by the comparison, or to maintain international consistency in concept and estimating procedures.

Notes: Applications of either sewage sludge or N as ammonium nitrate were made to a 15-year-old hayfield over a 2-year period. The original seeding mixture was unknown but was believed to be timothy (Phleum pratense L.) and red clover (Trifolium pratense L.). During the second year, botanical separations indicated that applications of both N and sewage sludge resulted in reduced proportions of red and volunteer white clover (Trifolium repens L.) as well as volunteer Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). During the growing season a decline in proportion of timothy (Phleum pratense L.) was observed for the control as well as for the N and sludge treatments. In contrast, quackgrass (Agropyron repens (L.) Beauv.) was markedly stimulated by the treatments and the proportion of it in the hay increased during the growing season.

Notes: Amorphous silicon p-i-n devices show a diminished short-wavelength response as the boron concentration of the p-layer increases. A reactive flush with NF3 between p- and i-layer deposition improves the short-wavelength response. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy profiles, however, do not reveal a significant boron tail into the i layer as anticipated suggesting that excess boron in the p layer is associated with interface recombination and is responsible for the effect.

Notes: We present photoluminescence, photoconductivity, and optical absorption spectra for ZnGeP2 crystals grown from the melt by gradient freezing and from the vapor phase by high pressure physical vapor transport (HPVT). A model of donor and acceptor related subbands in the energy gap of ZnGeP2 is introduced that explains the experimental results. The emission with peak position at 1.2 eV is attributed to residual disorder on the cation sublattice. The lower absorption upon annealing is interpreted in terms of both the reduction of the disorder on the cation sublattice and changes in the Fermi level position. The n-type conductivity of ZnGeP2 crystals grown under Ge-deficient conditions by the HPVT is related to the presence of additional donor states. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A number of strength parameters were investigated in a group of subjects with chronic anterior cruciate ligament deficiency; The response of subjects' hamstring muscles to a perturbation on an isokinetic dynamometer was fractionated into the premotor and motor times. Rate of force development in the 75 ms following the perturbation was also measured. The functional ability of the subjects was examined using the Noyes knee rating system. The results showed that the motor time was significantly correlated with the rate of force development and functional ability of the subjects. The ratio of hamstring to quadriceps torque recorded at peak and 30° flexion during isokinetic muscle work at 180°/s was also investigated. No significant relationship was observed between these ratios and functional ability. These findings indicate that factors other than peak hamstring muscle torque may be important to the level of functional ability attained by people with chronic anterior cruciate ligament deficiency.

Notes: SUMMARYStudy of 176 ft. (53.7 m) of core from the Arab/Darb Formation of the Umm Shaif Field, Abu Dhabi Marine Areas, has revealed a sequence of sediments which can be related to nine distinct cycles of sabkha formation. The sabkha cycle consists of a basal algal grainstone/boundstone (which is interpreted as a shoal) passing upwards through lagoonal dolomite, intertidal algal mat and into a final supratidal development of nodular anhydrite and associated dolomite. Dolomiti-sation and the formation of nodular anhydrite were early-stage products of diagenesis. Poikilotopic anhydrite is common in the lagoonal dolomites but it is thought that this was not formed until the sediment was completely lithified.Stylolites, although of small amplitude, are more common in dolomite than in limestone; a generalisation which is at variance with earlier observations.
