    Notes: Densification of alumina coated with a MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 (MAS) glass was investigated from 1400° to 1460°C. Spinel was observed to form at the liquid-alumina interface, whereas mullite crystallized uniformly in the liquid. Spinel and mullite crystallization kinetics were accelerated by smaller alumina particle size. Mullite and spinel crystallization retarded densification by forming a percolating network. Boron doping suppressed spinel formation, and thus alumina sintered to higher densities at low temperature. The concept of glass basicity is proposed as a useful guide for selecting dopants for low-temperature sintering.

    Notes: We used northern and western blotting to measure the quantity of glutamate and GABA transporters mRNA and their proteins within the hippocampal tissue of rats with epileptogenesis. Chronic seizures were induced by amygdalar injection of kainic acid 60 days before death. We found that expression of the mRNA and protein of the glial glutamate transporters GLAST and GLT-1 were down-regulated in the kainic acid-administered group. In contrast, EAAC-1 and GAT-3 mRNA and their proteins were increased, while GAT-1 mRNA and protein were not changed. We performed in vivo microdialysis in the freely moving state. During the interictal state, the extracellular glutamate concentration was increased, whereas the GABA level was decreased in the kainic acid group. Following potassium-induced depolarization, glutamate overflow was higher and the recovery time to the basal release was prolonged in the kainic acid group relative to controls. Our data suggest that epileptogenesis in rats with kainic acid-induced chronic seizures is associated with the collapse of extracellular glutamate regulation caused by both molecular down-regulation and functional failure of glutamate transport.

    Notes: Abstract The role of radical scavenging action in cerebral protective effect of drugs was investigated in vitro. Incubation of rat brain mitochondrial suspension with ascorbic acid and Fe2+ resulted in the formation of malondialdehyde and a decrease in the turbidity of the suspension, indicating that the mitochondria were peroxidatively disintegrated. Nizofenone at 10 μm or more inhibited the peroxidative disintegration of mitochondria, and complete inhibition was observed at 100–200 μm. The action of nizofenone was also ascertained by experiments with rat liver mitochondria. The anti-peroxidative activity of nizofenone was estimated to be approximately equivalent to that of α-tocopherol, and this property was unique. Among the cerebral protective drugs tested, thiopental was only slightly efficient, and pentobarbital, phenobarbital, and dimethyl sulfoxide had no effect. In addition, nizofenone was found to scavenge a stable free radical, diphenyl-p-picrylhydrazyl, but the barbiturates did not. These findings suggest that there is no intimate relationship between cerebral protective effect and free radical scavenging action.

    Notes: Methamphetamine is a psychostimulant drug acting on central monoaminergic neurons to produce both acute psychomotor stimulation and long-lasting behavioral effects including addiction and psychosis. Drug discrimination procedures have been particularly useful in characterizing subjective effects of addictive drugs. In the present study, to identify potential anatomical substrates for the discriminative stimulus effects of methamphetamine, we investigated the drug discrimination-associated Fos expression in Sprague–Dawley rats trained to discriminate methamphetamine from saline under a two-lever fixed ratio 20 (FR-20) schedule of food reinforcement. The rats that fulfilled the criteria for learning the discrimination were anesthetized and perfused 2 h after the drug discrimination test, and Fos immunoreactivity was examined in 15 brain regions. Fos expression in the brains of rats that discriminate methamphetamine from saline was significantly increased in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and the ventral tegmental area (VTA), but not in other areas including the cerebral cortex, caudate putamen, substantia nigra, hippocampus, amygdala and habenulla, as compared with the expression in control rats that were maintained under the FR-20 schedule. The present findings suggest a role for the VTA and NAc as possible neuronal substrates in the discriminative stimulus effects of methamphetamine.

    Notes: We found three variations of wild-type strains in terms of mexT-mediated regulation of the MexEF-OprN efflux pump, in which overexpression of the pump results in nfxC-type antibiotic resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Type-I: the mexT gene of the wild-type strain encoded inactive MexT and the nfxC-type mutants derived from this parent had an additional mutation in mexT converting MexT from the inactive to the active form. Type-II: The mexT gene in the wild-type strain had an 8-bp insert producing inactive MexT and the nfxC-type mutants from this parent had a deletion of the 8-bp insert converting inactive MexT to the active form. Type-III: Both the wild-type strain and its nfxC-type derivative produced identical and active MexT. The nfxC mutant from this parent must have an additional mutation. The original nfxC mutant isolated in 1990 might be derived from the Type-I parent strain.

    Notes: To investigate the bacterial response to antibiotic stress, we analyzed the outer membrane proteins of Pseudomonas aeruginosa grown in the presence of a sub-minimum inhibitory concentration of antibiotics. Among the antibiotics tested, fluoroquinolones and streptonigrin induced a large amount of outer membrane protein with a molecular mass of 43 kDa. This protein is most likely the stress-responsive protein, since the quinolone-resistant mutants with a higher minimum inhibitory concentration of antibiotic than the wild-type strain produced a large amount of 43-kDa protein only in the presence of sub-minimum inhibitory concentration of the mutants itself, but not that of the antibiotic-susceptible wild-type strain. The sequence of N-terminal 15 amino acids of the 43-kDa protein was identical to that of pyocin R1. However, purified pyocin R1 failed to accumulate in the outer membrane. Thus, we concluded that the 43-kDa protein (pyocin R1) is the antibiotic-stress-induced outer membrane protein.

    Notes: Summary Some attempts were made to recover uranium from sea and fresh water using immobilized Streptomyces viridochromogenes and Chlorella regularis cells. The cells immobilized in polyacrylamide gel have the most favorable features for uranium recovery; high adsorption ability, good mechanical properties, and applicability in a column system. The adsorption of uranium by the immobilized cells is not affected by the pH values between 4 and 9. These results show that uranium adsorption becomes independent of pH after immobilization. The amounts of uranium adsorbed by the immobilized cells increased linearly with temperature, suggesting that the adsorption of uranium by the immobilized cells is an endothermic reaction. The immobilized cells can recover uranium almost quantitatively from both fresh and sea water containing uranium, and almost all uranium adsorbed is desorbed with a solution of Na2CO3. Thus the immobilized cells of Streptomyces and Chlorella can be used repeatedly in adsorption-desorption process.

    Notes: The effect of AlGaN surface traps on breakdown voltage VB and drain current collapse inAlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) were investigated using experimentalmeasurement and numerical simulation. The drain current transient due to surface traps wassystematically measured and analyzed, and the activation energy of a surface trap was evaluated asapproximately 0.7 eV. Results from the device simulation of VB in HEMTs were in good agreementwith the experimental results when assuming surface traps.     Notes: Photocatalyst materials were prepared as a hybrid between TiO2 /SiO2 via low temperaturehydrothermal method (150oC) without further heat treatment. Porous silica from rice husk ash wasused as a support for fine TiO2 particles which acted as a photocatalyst when radiated with a UV light.TiO2-deposited SiO2 was successfully prepared through hydrolysis of TiOSO4 solution by controllingsynthesis parameters such as pH ,concentration of TiOSO4, temperature and time under hydrothermaltreatment. The obtained products were characterized for physical and chemical properties by means ofXRD, XRF, BET and TEM . It was found that pH had an influence on the crystallization of TiO2, andunder an appropriated pH, only anatase presented along with amorphous phase. High crystallinity ofnano-crystalline anatase ( about 5 nm) deposited on silica surface was observed through TEM.Adsorption and photocatalytic performances of the prepared catalyst were evaluated in methyleneblue aqueous solution in the dark and under ultraviolet ray irradiation, respectively. Due to thesynergetic functions of adsorption by porous substrate and decomposition by TiO2 photocatalyst, anenhancing of photocatalytic activity for decomposition of organic pollutants in water under UV rayswas obtained

    Notes: Abstract Accumulation of uranium by basidiomycetes was examined. Of 46 species of basidiomycetes tested, extremely high abilities to accumulate uranium were found in Favolus arcularis, Inonotus mikadoi and Tricholoma conglobatum. All basidiomycetes tested took up uranium far more readily than other heavy metals from a solution containing seven metals. T. conglobatum accumulated uranium more readily than thorium from a solution containing both uranium and thorium. The ability of heavy metal accumulation by T. conglobatum varied with the culture stage; cells cultured for 4 days had the highest affinity and selectivity for uranium. The immobilized T. conglobatum cells adsorbed uranium almost quantitatively and almost all uranium adsorbed was desorbed with 1 M Na2CO3. The immobilized cells can be used repeatedly for the process of uranium adsorption-desorption.
