Notes: This paper presents a method for calculating the external inductance and mutual inductance coefficients of tokamak plasma configurations in a consistent way. The method actually solves the external equilibrium problem, linking the poloidal equilibrium fields with the value of the total plasma current and the geometric parameters that describe the plasma cross section. This link imposes constraints upon the values of the inductance for superconducting tori obtained by a previous method described by S. P. Hirshman and G. H. Neilson [Phys. Fluids 29, 790 (1986)]. Only if these constraints are properly taken into account do their results correspond to real tokamak equilibrium configurations. The present method is illustrated by calculating the external equilibrium parameters for a wide range of values of the tokamak aspect ratio. Of particular interest are the results for the external inductance, the elongation, and the vertical equilibrium field in the low aspect-ratio range A〈1.5. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Positron annihilation lifetime and Doppler broadening energy spectra have been measured in Pr-containing YBa2Cu3O7−δ as a function of temperature between 18 and 295 K. The defect-related positron lifetime component τ2 was independent of temperature for the PrBa2Cu3O7−δ compound and was very close to the value τ1 associated with bulk or defect-free material. These results indicate that the structure of this compound is nearly free of defects which trap positrons and that there is no electronic structure change during cooling. There was a slight temperature dependence below Tc for the Y0.5Pr0.5Ba2Cu3O7−δ compound. It was also found that a change in the positron Doppler line-shape parameter S occurred at the superconducting transition temperature for 0.5 Pr-containing compound but not for the 1.0 Pr-containing compound. These results show that the average electron momentum at the annihilation sites increases as temperature is lowered across the superconducting transition range for the 0.5 Pr-containing compound but not for the PrBa2Cu3O7−δ compound. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The immunogenicity and protective efficacy of various antigen-adjuvant formulations derived either from the merozoite-surface protein-3 (MSP-3) or the glutamate-rich protein (GLURP) of Plasmodium falciparum were evaluated in Saimiri sciureus monkeys. These proteins were selected for immunogenicity studies based primarily on their capacity of inducing an antibody-dependent cellular inhibition effect on parasite growth. Some of the S. sciureus monkeys immunized with MSP-3212−380-AS02 or GLURP27−500-alum were able to fully or partially control parasitaemia upon an experimental P. falciparum [Falciparum Uganda Palo Alto (FUP-SP) strain] blood-stage infection, and this protection was related to the prechallenge antibody titres induced. The data are indicative that MSP-3 and GLURP can induce protective immunity against an experimental P. falciparum infection using adjuvants that are acceptable for human use and this should trigger further studies with those new antigens.

Notes: Abstract Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) films prepared by reactive rf sputtering show excellent properties for optical recording applications in a very narrow range of oxygen partial pressure (around 4×10−5 Torr). This narrow range is at the edge of a plateau in the electrical conductivity of the films. A small increase in the oxygen partial pressure (P(O2)≈5×10−5 Torr) causes a large and abrupt change in the electrical conductivity as well as in the structural and optical properties of these films. In addition, irradiating films at the edge of the plateau (P(O2)≈4×10−5) with a low-power pulsed laser (≤25 mW) yields transparent films. These results suggest that the same mechanism may be responsible for the opaque to transparent transformations observed in these experiments.

Notes: Abstract Hydroxyapatite coating on commercially pure titanium has been produced by a biomimetic method in order to improve osteointegration for medical implant purposes. A specific chemical treatment by etching titanium substrate with different concentrations of NaOH aqueous solution at 130 °C in an autoclave, followed by heat treatment at 600 °C was selected to obtain an activated titanium substrate. The microporous surface obtained has allowed the nucleation and growth of a calcium phosphate layer by soaking the substrate in a simulated body fluid (SBF). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) together with energy dispersive analyzer for X-ray (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) as well as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were employed to evaluate the hydroxyapatite coating. A homogeneous structure coating without cracks defined the chemical treatment condition of the substrate. © 2000 Kluwer Academic Publishers

Notes: Abstract Experimental efforts to characterize and develop an understanding of non Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior at low temperature in f-electron materials are reviewed for three f-electron systems: M1−xUxPd3 (M = Sc, Y), U1−xThxPd2Al3, and UCu5−xPdx. The emerging systematics of NFL behavior in f-electron systems, based on the present sample of nearly ten f-electron systems, is updated. Many of the f-electron systems exhibit the following temperature dependences of the electrical resistivity p, specific heat C, and magnetic susceptibility χ for T ≪ T0, where To is a characteristic temperature: P(T) ∼ 1 –aT/T 0, where a 〈 0 or 〉 0, C(T)/T ∼ (-1/T o) In (T/bT 0), and χ(T) ∼ 1 −c(T/To)1/2. In several of the f-electron systems, the characteristic temperature To can be identified with the Kondo temperature Tk.

Notes: Abstract Evidence for non Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior in y1−x UxPd3 and related systems is reviewed and discussed within the context of possible microscopic mechanisms. Low temperature electrical resistivity, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility measurements on the Th1−xUxPd2Al3 system reveal unconventional Kondo behavior with NFL low temperature characteristics. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on UCu3.5Pd1.5, which has previously been shown to exhibit NFL behavior, are presented. Some systematics of the NFL low temperature behavior observed in several f-electron materials include a linear temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity ϱ ∼ 1−aT with either positive or negative coefficient a, a logarithmically diverging specific heat C/T ∼−lnT, and T1/2 asymptotic behavior of the magnetic susceptibility χ ∼ 1 − T1/2.

Notes: Abstract The viability of the yeast Rhodotorula rubra, isolated from liquid samples of gold-mine effluents, was not affected by the presence of 11.52 mM cyanide. The yeast was able to utilize ammonia, generated from abiotic cyanide degradation in the presence of reducing sugars, in aerobic culture at pH 9.0. These physiological characteristics encourage studies with mixed cultures of cyanide-degrading organisms, using this yeast as an assimilator of ammonia.
