    Notes: Abstract Squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity are relatively common lesions, and often can be controlled by radiation therapy. Recently, a series of these tumors has been encountered which did not respond positively to irradiation, necessitating subsequent extensive surgery. This report describes some fine structural changes which were observed in squamous cell carcinomas following exposure to x-irradiation. In addition to the common, keratin-forming differentiated cell, others which were observed were secretory-like, undifferentiated and phagocytic cells. Undifferentiated tumor cells occasionally became incorporated, at least temporarily, as a component of the blood vessel wall, perhaps reflecting metastatic potentiality. It is proposed that irradiation may either increase potential avenues of tumor cell differentiation or inactivate inhibitors thereof.

    Notes: Summary To determine whether or not prostaglandins enter adrenocortical parenchymal cells,3H-PGE1 was injected intravenously into rats. In histological preparations, grains denoting activity were noted in intracellular lipid droplets and nuclei and in sinusoids. At the fine structural level, activity was observed in lipid droplets, mitochondria, the agranular endoplasmic reticulum, nuclei and the plasma membrane. Biochemical lipid analyses of the adrenals revealed activity in the cholesterol and cholesterol ester fractions. Large amounts of unaltered3H-PGE1 and its degradation products were also present. Compared to the liver, the adrenal was more effective in degrading prostaglandin, when expressed on a weight basis. The possible roles of the organelles in PGE1 degradation and in prostaglandin-related hormone synthesis are discussed.

    Notes: Summary Histological and fine structural studies of adrenal cortices were performed on male Sprague-Dawley rats which had been given intravenous injections of prostaglandin E1 or E2. It was found that there were increased numbers of intracellular lipid droplets, free ribonucleoprotein particles, cholesterol ester clefts and coated vesicles of both the small and large varieties. A reorganization of the internal mitochondrial membranes and the appearance of protrusions of parenchymal cytoplasm into the sinusoidal lumina accompanied by vasodilation were also observed. These alterations are not typical of those observed following exogenous ACTH administration and are therefore considered to be prostaglandin-induced.

    Notes: Cytoplasmic projections of adrenocortical cells have been observed within sinusoidal lumina of various species. The projections contain organelles and inclusions which are morphologically identical to those in subjacent functional cortical cells, and appear to be capable of hormone biosynthesis. The frequency with which the projections are observed is markedly enhanced by the administration of prostaglandin E1. Continuity has been observed between the projections and the parenchymal cells. Whether or not these morphological entities reflect a mechanism for an enhanced response to corticotropin stimulation remains uncertain. Their association with cellular autolysis or degradation appears doubtful.
