Notes: Abstract K-Ar ages have been obtained for mineral separates: plagioclases from two dolerites and biotites from one granite and four granodiorites in the Oban-Obudu massif of southeastern Nigeria. Dolerites in the Oban area give K-Ar plagioclase ages of 204.0 ± 9.9 Ma and 219.9 ± 4.7 Ma. The granite of the Obudu area yields a K-Ar biotite age of 507.6 ± 10.1 Ma whilst the granodiorites in the Oban area yield K-Ar biotite ages ranging from 474.6 ± 9.4 Ma to 511.8 ± 10.0 Ma. The dolerites are related to the tholeiitic basaltic magmatism at the early opening of the central Atlantic, and are compatible in age with the formation of the Ring Complexes and the rifting of the Benue Trough of Nigeria. The granites and granodiorites belong to the syntectonic Older Granite series in the Pan-African orogeny. The emplacement timing deduced from the reported Pb-Pb zircon age of 617 ± 2 Ma and the newly obtained biotite ages suggest that these older granites in southeastern Nigeria had a prolonged cooling history of ∼110 Ma.

Notes: Abstract Disordered superconducting Pb- and Pb+30% Bi-films are investigated by electron tunneling. Results are critically compared with experimental specific heat data reported recently by Ewert and Sander1,2. The low-frequency phonon densities of statesF(ω) are found to be enhanced for amorphous films.

Notes: Summary 1. Isolated rabbit hearts were perfused with a modified Tyrode solution containing noradrenaline in concentrations increasing stepwise from 5.9 nM to 5.9 μM at 5 min intervals. This dose regime was applied twice before and once 20 min after starting perfusion with one of 9 tricyclic drugs. Ventricular rate and right atrial and ventricular tensions were recorded using the transverse method. 2. Infusions of noradrenaline evoked ventricular arrhythmias in hearts perfused with amitriptyline 4.8 μM, chlorpromazine 5.0 μM, desipramine 5.0 μM, dibenzepine 34.7 μM, doxepin 4.7 μM, imipramine 4.7 μM, noxiptiline 9.1 μM and opipramole 9.2 μM. The incidence of arrhythmias increased with the concentration of noradrenaline applied and the dose of tricyclic drug administered. Whenever arrhythmias had started they continued as long as noradrenaline was infused. Noradrenaline failed to produce arrhythmias in hearts not exposed to drugs and after iprindole 4.7 μM or cocaine 2.9–18 μM. 3. Propranolol 0.1 μM inhibited the incidence of arrhythmias after doxepin 4.7 μM plus noradrenaline 5.9–190 nM. 4. Neuronal uptake of exogenous noradrenaline in the rabbit heart was inhibited by the tricyclic drugs in the following order of declining potency: doxepin, noxiptiline, amitriptyline, desipramine, chlorpromazine, imipramine, dibenzepine, opipramole and iprindole. 5. Among tricyclic drugs the potency to inhibit amine uptake is related to the incidence of arrhythmias evoked by a submaximal concentration of noradrenaline. It appears, however, that these two parameters are not causally linked. 6. The isolated rabbit heart perfused with noradrenaline might be used as a model for testing the arrhythmogenic actions of tricyclic drugs and the treatment of such arrhythmias.

Notes: Summary 1. The right sympathetic nerves of isolated perfused rabbit hearts were stimulated electrically (1 msec, supramaximal strength, 15 sec) with increasing frequencies (0.25–20 Hz) at 3 min intervals before and 20 min after starting perfusion with desipramine, doxepin or iprindole. Ventricular rate, right atrial and right ventricular tensions were recorded using the transverse method. 2. Sympathic nerve stimulation caused ventricular arrhythmias in the presence of desipramine (3.3 and 5.0 · 10−6 M) and doxepin (1.6−4.7×10−6 M) but failed to produce arrhythmias in hearts not exposed to drugs, or after iprindole, cocaine and atropine. 3. When desipramine or doxepin was added to Tyrode solution containing propranolol 1.7×10−7 M, sympathetic nerve stimulation no longer elicited arrhythmias. However, quinidine 1.3×10−6 M was unable to prevent arrhythmias. 4. The incidence and duration of arrhythmias provoked by sympathetic nerve stimulation increased with time of perfusion of desipramine and doxepin. In the majority of hearts nerve stimulation ceased to elicit arrhythmias 9 min after removal of the drugs from the perfusion fluid. 5. It is concluded that the combination of noradrenaline release by nerve stimulation and atrioventricular blockade by tricyclic antidepressants is responsible for the arrhythmia-producing effect observed in the present study. The isolated rabbit heart stimulated via its sympathetic nerves appears to be suitable for testing the arrhythmogenic actions of tricyclic antidepressants.

Notes: Abstract Disordered and recrystallized thin films of Sn, Pb, Bi, and $$Bi_{1 - x} Sb_x $$ both normal and superconducting are investigated by electron tunneling. The films are prepared by evaporation onto a cooled substrate. We studied especially the effect of lattice disorder on the superconducting parameters and on the phonon spectrum which is calculated from the superconducting-electron density of states. The most significant property of the disordered films is an increase of the low-energy-phonon density of states. Anomalies of the tunneling resistance are more or less observed in all junctions. The influence of those anomalies on the evaluation of the superconducting parameters is considered.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated the temperature dependence of the upper critical fieldH c2 and the thermodynamical fieldH c for superconducting Mo-Re alloys containing magnetic impurities. In addition, the temperature dependence of the Ginzburg-Landau parameters κ1(T) and κ2(T) has been determined by measuring the magnetization and the specific heat. Our findings are compared with the theory of Fulde and Maki. In agreement with theory, our measurements show that the two pair-breaking mechanisms involved (magnetic field and magnetic impurities) are nonadditive if one departs from the linearized Ginzburg-Landau equation.
