Notes: [Auszug] The trace element content of human tendon was examined by emission spectroscopy to determine the presence of iron group elements (Table 1). Most elements searched for were detected in sufficient amounts to conceivably account for the observed resonance. If it is due to a paramagnetic ion, the ...

Notes: Summary Electromagnetic fields arising from the electrical power system are pervasively present in the environment. To help evaluate their public-health risk we raised 3 successive generations of mice in a low-strength, 60-Hz electric field. We found that the field caused an increased mortality in each generation, and, altered body weights in the 3rd generation.

Notes: Summary Mice were allowed to mate, gestate, deliver and rear their offspring for 3 successive generations while being continuously exposed to 60 Hz electric fields. Mice exposed to vertical electric fields exhibited decreased body weights at 35 days postpartum and increased mortality, rates for 3 successive generations. Mice exposed to horizontal electric fields exhibited decreased body weights for 2 successive generations.

Notes: [Auszug] In a previous communication we reported the detection of electron paramagnetic resonance signals from whole human bone as well as extracted collagen and apatite4. Apatite, prepared by refluxing with ethylene diamine6 and washing in distilled water, gave a complex signal consisting of a g-2 ...

Notes: Summary Tissue collagen exhibits several levels of structural organization, and this complicates efforts to determine the origin of its piezoelectricity. We made collagen films—by evaporation and electrodeposition from solution—and examined the relation between collagen's piezoelectricity and its electron microscopic appearance. We found that the electrodeposited films were more organized and exhibited higher piezoelectric coefficients than the evaporated films. Despite this, the evaporated films were piezoelectric, thereby suggesting that the effect originates either at the level of the tropocollagen molecule or, at most, with aggregated structures no larger than 50 Å in diameter.

Notes: Abstract The literature relevant to the biological effects of applied magnetic fields has been reviewed. Reported effects vary with the type of field applied and the duration of application. The production of magneto phosphenes by the application of alternating fields (of certain frequencies) is a well accepted phenomenon. The major question, at this time, seems to be the mode of action responsible. Medium to high strength, non-uniform, steady-state fields have well documented effects upon rapidly growing tissues. Steady-state fields with strengths approximating the natural geomagnetic field are reported to produce alterations in the pattern of biological cycles.

Notes: Abstract The application of microampere direct current (d.c.) to electrodes implanted in bone results in a proliferative response that has been found useful in the treatment of certain types of fracture. The mechanism of this response is unknown. In this investigation, the d.c. polarisation properties of 11 implantable cathode materials were measured,in vitro andin vivo, and then related to the conditions known to produce the osteogenic response. From these data, limiting parameters for clinical use of the various electrodes can be determined. Nitrogen purge experiments showed the dependence of the current on molecular oxygen and suggested that the products of oxygen reduction (H2O2, O2 −, OH·, OH− etc.) may mediate the proliferation of bone by appropriate cells in the region of the electrode. The presence of these intermediates, some of which are free radicals, and their possible side effects needs further study.
