Abstract The karyotype ofSalamandra salamandra (Urodela, Salamandridae) was analysed from squash preparations of adult testes. The 24 chromosomes, ranged in decreasing order, can be classified into three principal groups of 8 chromosomes each. Only the elements composing the 2nd group can be identified individually by means of their length or arm-ratio. In the 1st and the 3rd groups, possibilities of classification are still doubtful. In order not to introduce an artificial classification which might result from technical imperfections, a statistical test has been performed to ascertain the hypothesis that neighbouring pairs have equal mean lengths or equal mean arm-ratios. The statistical method proposed herein is related to analysis of variance, but differs from usual methods owing to the fact that the doubtfulness of the classification in each of the 35 studied figures is taken into account.
