Notes: Abstract: Male, Fischer strain 344 adult rats were given various doses (25–100 mg/kg) of p,p′-DDT by oral gavage, and levels of biogenic amines, their metabolites, and amino acid neurotransmitters, tremor activity, and rectal temperature were measured at several intervals (2, 5, 12, and 24 h) after dosing. Dose-related increases in rectal temperature and in tremor activity were observed at 50–100 mg/kg 12 h after dosing. Tremorigenic doses of DDT increased the 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) level in hypothalamus, brainstem, and striatum, whereas doses of 75 and 100 mg/kg increased the 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG) level in hypothalamus and brainstem and the 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid level in striatum. Six amino acids were assayed in the brainstem, hypothalamus, and striatum; aspartate and glutamate levels were increased only in brainstem at 25–100 mg/kg. No consistent changes in concentrations of taurine, glutamine, glycine, or γ-aminobutyric acid were observed in any of the regions assayed. Time-related increases in rectal temperature were seen 2–12 h after dosing, and the presence of tremor was observed 5–12 h after dosing; for both the time of peak effect was at 12 h. The DDT-induced hyperthermia and tremor were associated with dose- and time-related increases in levels of 5-HIAA, MHPG, aspartate, and glutamate. It is suggested that an increase in the turnover rate of 5-hydroxy-tryptamine (5-HT) may be responsible for the DDT-induced hyperthermia, whereas increases in the metabolism of 5-HT and norepinephrine may be involved in the tremor.

Notes: We have studied 122 patients with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) poisoning. All of the patients had one or more signs of poisoning, particularly mucocutaneous pigmentation, acneform eruptions, deformity of nails, dry skin or dyshidrosis. A marked increase of blood PCB levels was found in every case.

Notes: derivation of spatial data from European Remote Sensing Satellite (ERS-1) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery is briefly described in this paper. A rigorous algorithm for space intersection applied in different geometric configurations and combinations, including the “same-side” image pair and the “opposite-side” pair, is illustrated. A simple error model is proposed by the authors to validate the error from different radargrammetric configurations. The experimental results show the possibilities and the limitations of obtaining three dimensional information from spaceborne SAR imagery with or without using ground control points. At the present stage, as a supplementary role in space cartography, the ERS-1 SAR imagery not only provides a new way to see the earth through clouds but also makes available an alternative tool to map the planet.

Notes: The fatty acid composition of the total lipid of eggs produced by hens on a control diet agreed closely with the compositions reported by other workers. The neutral glyceride fraction was more unsaturated than the phospholipid fraction. Addition of 10% of linseed, cottonseed or coconut oil to the diet altered the fatty acid composition of the egg lipids. Neither linseed nor cottonseed oil affected the total lipid content of the yolk, but coconut oil feeding brought about a small increase. In general, the acids of the neutral glyceride fraction were more susceptible to dietary manipulation than those of the phospholipid fraction. The effects of dietary fat on yolk lipid composition were compared for two types of bird.

Notes: Abstract  This note presents a back propagation neural network for PIV image analysis. Unlike the conventional auto-correlation method that identifies one pair of image out of the picture, the proposed network distinguishes all the image pairs in the measurement area and provides different labels for each pair. Experimental investigations show good agreement with the auto-correlation process for the uniform flow measurement, and a 78.1% success ratio for the stagnation flow.

Notes: Summary We have developed a rapid method to molecularly distinguish different types of Hb H disease. The study depended on (a) most of the Hb H disease in Taiwan having anα-thalassemia-1 of the Southeast Asia type (-SEA) in one allele and (b) the differences of X box ofα-globin gene cluster in the other allele. To detect the -SEA allele, we utilized the primers located on either side of the breakpoint to do PCR, then characterized the amplified products. For the other allele, we sequenced part of the X box, and found that bases −2803 to −2461 of the X box of −α 3.7 belonged to the X box ofα 2 globin gene. In −α 4.2, the bases belonged to the X box ofα 1 globin gene, whereas inα cs α it contained both X boxes ofα 1 andα 2 globin genes. There was anMboII site at this region of the X box ofα 2 globin gene. We utilized PCR to amplify this region and digested it with restriction enzymeMboII, then combined it with another PCR of different primer pairs to molecularly diagnose different types of Hb H disease. One hundred and one cases of Hb H disease from different families were studied: all of the cases had one allele of -SEA deletion, while the other allele showed that 52/101 were −α 3.7, 41/101 wereα cs α, 7/101 were −α 4.2, and 1/101 was −α G.Taichung. Of 52 cases of Hb H with −α 3.7, 47 were type-I deletion and five were type-II deletion.
