Notes: We present in this work the results of a Raman spectroscopy study on the plasmon–phonon coupling in Ge-doped p-type gallium arsenide. A series of polarized Raman scattering experiments were carried out on epitaxial films grown by liquid-phase epitaxy on (100) GaAs substrates at 20, 100, and 300 K. The films were p type with free hole densities varying in the range of 5×1017–1×1020 cm−3. Under the scattering configurations employed, the longitudinal optical (LO) mode is forbidden for crossed polarization while the transverse optical (TO) mode is forbidden for both parallel and crossed polarizations. However, all the polarized Raman spectra showed two peaks with frequencies close to the TO and LO phonons of semi-insulating GaAs. The appearance of such forbidden modes was accounted for with a theoretical model which considers phonon–plasmon coupled modes with wave vectors much larger than those given by the regular q≈0 wave vector transferred by photons. Ionized acceptor impurities provide such additional wave vector transfer through elastic scattering of the photoexcited electrons and holes. It is demonstrated that the experimental values for position and linewidth of the peaks are well described by the theoretical calculations when Fröhlich-type and deformation potential mechanisms are considered as means of interaction. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have measured the Raman spectra of heavily carbon doped (p〉1019 cm−3) GaSb and GaAsSb. A local vibrational mode (LVM) due to carbon residing on group-V lattice sites was observed at 540 cm−1 for GaSb and 568 cm−1 for GaAs0.44Sb0.56. A gap mode at 164 cm−1 was observed for GaSb. The frequency of the LVM as well as the gap mode is in quantitative agreement with recent theoretical predictions. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary A surgical method for bilateral retrocollis (BR) is presented: Selective resection of specific posterior cervical muscles for the treatment of bilateral retrocollis is described. The operative procedure includes partial resection of the upper part of the trapezius, part of the splenius muscles of both sides, part of the semispinalis capitis and semispinalis cervicis muscles of both sides. 15 cases were treated surgically during 1980–1989. Postoperative follow up (3–10 years) showed that the abnormal movements were abolished completely or for the greater part in 13 patients (87%) while preserving the normal posture and mobility.

Notes: Abstract TheA 1g andB 1g low-energy Raman continua of YBa2Cu3O y (Y123) single crystals, withy=7.0, 6.99, and 6.93, have been investigated. It is found that the peak frequency of theA 1g continuum is equal to 310±10 cm−1 and independent of oxygen concentration fory in the above range. The central frequency of the broad peak in theB 1g continuum, however, shifts from about 470 cm−1 fory∼7.0 to 550 cm−1 fory∼6.93. Thus, a relatively small change in oxygen concentration results in a significant redistribution of the states contributing to theB 1g continuum. Assuming the low-energy portions of the continua are electronic in origin, the Raman spectra have been calculated and the results compared to the experimental spectra. It is suggested that the Raman continua arise, at least in part, from scattering across a spin fluctuation-induced pseudogap.

Notes: Abstract The low energy electronic Raman continua of a La1.83Sr0.17CuO4 single crystal have been obtained in several different scattering geometries, and for temperatures above and below Tc. Based upon the polarization dependence of the spectra obtained for T ≤ Tc it is concluded that the superconducting gap is anisotropic with nodes located near the (±1,±1) directions in reciprocal space and maxima close to the kx and ky axes. The results are compared to spectra obtained from other high-Tc compounds and the possible compatibility of the results with particular gap functions is discussed.
