Notes: The growth kinetics of ultrathin SiO2 films on silicon in a nitrous oxide (N2O) ambient have been investigated as a function of oxidation temperature and time. The results show that the overall growth follows the linear-parabolic law proposed by Deal and Grove [J. Appl. Phys. 36, 3770 (1965)]. The data analysis indicates that although the oxidation proceeds by surface-limited reaction in the initial stage, it rapidly changes into a diffusion-controlled reaction. This behavior is evidenced from the fact that the reaction of the N2O molecule with the silicon surface produces an interfacial nitrogen-rich layer which acts as a barrier to the oxidant passing through the SiO2/Si interface. From the Arrhenius equation for N2O oxidation, the activation energies for the linear rate constant B/A and for the parabolic rate constant B are determined to be 1.5 and 2.3 eV, respectively. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Metal–oxide–semiconductor structures with a Ge nanocrystal embedded in SiO2 films were fabricated by Ge+ ion implantation and subsequent high-temperature annealing. The Raman spectra indicate the evidence of self-assembled Ge nanocrystals in the SiO2 films. The Ge size and its density were estimated to 3–5 nm and 1×1012/cm2, respectively. Photoluminescence spectra showed a strong blue–violet band around 400 nm and a weak near-infrared band around 750 nm, respectively. The several implantation-induced deficient centers are believed to be responsible for the blue-light luminescence. Capacitance–voltage characteristics exhibit the flatband voltage shifts of 1.02 V after the electron injection into the SiO2/Ge/SiO2 potential well. An anomalous leakage current was clearly observed in the current–voltage characteristics. The precise simulation of quantum electron transport in the SiO2 film indicates that the anomalous conduction is originated from resonant tunneling in the SiO2/Ge/SiO2 double-well band structure. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Hard hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films were coated on amorphous silicon photoreceptors by the plasma decomposition of acetylene (C2H2). This overlayer proved to be a much better protective layer for the adsorption of external species compared to an a-SiNx or a-Si1−xCx overcoating layer, and the image degradation induced by such adsorption was considerably reduced. The highly protective properties were attributed to the hydrophobic nature of C–Hn (n=1–3) and C–C bonds contained in the a-C:H film. The optical properties of the a-C:H films are also described.

Notes: A proposal for a photonic transistor is made and some basic proving experiments are described. These experiments show that by focusing two laser beams (405 and 635 nm) in one small spot on a high-speed rotating optical disk, a large signal enhancement is observed. It was found that a plasmon interaction generated between a silver light-scattering center and recorded small marks in the optical disk with a super-resolution near-field structure produced the large signal amplification in the spot (〈1 μm). A modulated signal of the blue laser was enhanced by 60 times by controlling the red laser power from 1.5 to 3.5 mW. It has been shown that the system has the potential to realize all-thin-films photonic transistors by using local plasmon amplification. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract. Infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) contains two segments of double- stranded RNA (the larger RNA segment, A; and a smaller RNA segment, B). The IPNV- Buhl isolate belongs to the VR299 serotype, and eel virus European (EVE) is serologically the same as the Ab serotype. IPNV-Buhl is virulent to rainbow trout fry, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), whereas EVE is avirulent. To determine the genetic basis for the difference of the virulence, intertypic reassortants were made between IPNV-Buhl and EVE. The reassortants with the genotypes of P/E (segment A of IPNV-Buhl and segment B of EVE) and E/P (segment A of EVE and segment B of IPNV-Buhl) were studied for their pathogenicity to rainbow trout fry. The P/E reassortant was highly virulent, similar to the IPNV-Buhl parent (P/P), while the E/P reassortant was avirulent, as was the EVE parent (E/E). A high level of viral replication was observed in almost all organs of the fry infected with the P/E reassortant and the IPNV-Buhl parent. In contrast, viral replication was restricted to the epidermal cells of the fry infected with the E/P reassortant and the EVE parent. The results demonstrate that the larger RNA segment (RNA segment A) of IPNV is related to cell tropism in vivo and is responsible for virulence in rainbow trout fry.

Notes: The GA-signal transduction pathways downstream to the Gα protein in rice seedling root were investigated using in-gel kinase assay and in vitro protein phosphorylation techniques with a Gα protein defective mutant, d1. A 50-kDa protein kinase was detected downstream to Gα protein in the membrane fraction of rice seedling roots using an in-gel kinase assay with histone III-S as a substrate. The activity of a 50-kDa protein kinase increased in the wild-type rice by gibberellin (GA3) treatment, but did not change in the d1 mutant. This protein kinase activity was inhibited by the Ca2+ chelator ethyleneglycol-bis-(beta-aminoethylether)-N,N,N 1,N 1-tetraacetic acid (EGTA), protein kinase inhibitors, staurosporine and H7, and calmodulin antagonist, trifluoperazine, suggesting that the 50-kDa protein kinase is a putative plant Ca2+-dependent protein kinase (CDPK). The activity of the 50-kDa putative CDPK reached its highest level at 3 h after GA3 treatment and then gradually declined with time. In order to identify the endogenous substrate for 50-kDa putative CDPK, two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by in vitro protein phosphorylation was carried out. The phosphorylation activity of an endogenous protein PP30, identified as an unknown protein having molecular weight 30 kDa and isoelectric point 5.8 was increased in the wild-type rice by GA3 treatment, compared with the d1 mutant. The addition of GA3 treated membrane fraction, which predominantly represent a 50-kDa putative CDPK further increased the phosphorylation of PP30. Almost similar to GA3 treatment, phosphorylation activity of PP30 was also increased by the treatment with cholera toxin in the wild-type rice but not in d1 mutant. These results suggest that the 50-kDa putative CDPK and an unknown protein, PP30 promoted by GA3 treatment are G-protein mediated in rice seedling roots.
