Notes: Nascent high-molecular-weight (UHMW) polyethylene (PE) samples of different origins show a rather high crystallinity of about 70-75% and contain both a major portion of orthorhombic extended chain crystallites and a minor portion of triclinic crystallites. The triclinic content is greater the higher the molecular weight of the sample and the higher the activity of the used catalyser. A melting / recooling treatment results in a reduction of crystallinity by about 15-25% and disappearance of the triclinic phase. Further, an irreversible conversion of nascent orthorhombic extended chain crystallites to orthorhombic folded chain crystallites of increased lateral dimensions and crystalline perfections takes place during the melting / recooling treatment. The results are compared to those obtained for lower-molecular-weight PE samples and for high-strength / modulus PE fibers of different origins.

Notes: Internal reflectance Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra of tetraglycidyl diaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM) cured with diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) obtained before and after exposure to the combined effect of stress, elevated temperature, and moisture (STM), elevated temperature and moisture (TM), or stress and elevated temperature (ST) environments were used to search for evidence of irreversible chemical changes in epoxy resins. These changes were compared with the infrared changes observed during the late stages of curing. The infrared intensities of the bands attributed to the sulfone group are sensitive to chemical changes and moisture content, which suggests their potential use as molecular monitors within the epoxy network. The results of eight experimental series provide spectroscopic evidence indicating that exposure of epoxy specimens to STM and TM environments that greatly exceed anticipated service conditions results in detectable rupture of chemical bonds in the polymer network. The extent of bond rupture is independent of the applied stress in the 0-90 kg/cm2 range. Internal swelling stresses are therefore believed responsible for the observed bond cleavages. Spectral evidence indicates that postcure reactions are the most prominent chemical changes induced by exposure of epoxy specimens to the ST, SM, M, and T environments.

Notes: Ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to study the film thickness of continuous and discontinuous polymer films in the 1-20 nm thickness range on smooth silicon wafers and on structured aluminium substrates. The methods of exploiting AFM for thickness measurements with a high spatial resolution are described. For continuous films, the AFM method is a direct one, i.e. it does not rely on any model. There is excellent agreement between AFM and ellipsometry in the 1-10 nm thickness range. Very small systematic deviations occur in this range but big deviations occur above 10 nm, and are discussed. The film preparation method, spin coating, was characterized to result in prepolymer films with a very homogeneous thickness.Discontinuous films of 2-9 nm thick were also evaluated by both methods of thickness determination. In this case, for one of the AFM approaches a model has to be used too. The agreement between both methods ranged from very good to poor, depending on the kind of sample and on the kind of AFM determination method.

Description / Table of Contents: The phase transition process of cotton linters treated by sodium hydroxide solution has been studied with respect to NaOH concentration by means of a special wide-angle X-ray method of quantitative phase analysis. As a result the lattice of smaller or more disordered crystallites was found to change to cellulose II at lower NaOH concentrations. On partial alkalization the lattice transition from cellulose I to sodium cellulose I was observed to be a partially reversible process.

Description / Table of Contents: In dependence of a lattice transformation caused by treatment with aqueous alkali the changes of the supermolecular structure of linter-cellulose are characterized by suitable parameters (degree of crystallinity, order and size of crystalline regions). The application of the Ruland-Vonk-method for determining the degree of crystallinity as well as of a procedure for calculating lateral crystallite sizes involving peak separation by means of Pearson-VII-functions is described. The results are discussed on the basis of non-uniform fringed fibrils as a model for the cellulose structure.

Description / Table of Contents: The specific aspects of the electronic structure of partial-crystalline polymer insulators are discussed with polyethylene as an example. The results of the theoretical and the experimental estimation of the density of valence states are compared. Basing on these results a stochastic description of the charge carrier transport process is presented.

Description / Table of Contents: Blown films of LD-PE prepared with varying processing conditions have been investigated using different X-ray diffraction methods. All films have a-texture. Differences in the degree of orientation are noticed. Arragement and size of lamellae are estimated by SAXS-investigations. A WAXS peak separation procedure using Pearson-VII-functions allows the determination of crystallite sizes. The orthorhombic modification as the dominant crystalline phase and some amount of monoclinic modification of PE have been detected from the resolved WAXS pattern.
