    Notes: A capacitively coupled interdigital probe technique is described whereby the electrical characteristics of thin films at arbitrary frequencies in the range from about 100 kHz to beyond 1 GHz may be studied. Patterning of the film, deposition of electrodes, and bonding of electrical leads are unnecessary, so that all measurements are nondestructive and noninvasive. Preliminary measurements of the superconducting transition in thin films of the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7−δ in magnetic fields up to 1.5 T are presented and discussed. They show a large field-dependent peak, attributable to tunneling effects, just below the onset temperature. Anomalies are also seen at higher temperatures, providing evidence of a structural phase transition. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Surface acoustic wave (SAW) velocity and attenuation measurements have been performed on high-temperature superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) thin films (deposited on nonpiezoelectric substrates), and YBCO single crystals. A "bridge" technique is employed in which piezoelectric substrates, patterned with interdigital transducers, are bonded to the sample under investigation. The temperature dependence of 168 MHz SAW attenuation in a single crystal near its superconducting transition has been measured in applied magnetic fields up to 1.6 T. Features are seen above the superconducting transition temperature which may be indicative of a transition in the electric polarization of the material. A field-dependent attenuation peak, seen in the superconducting state, is discussed in terms of the theory of thermally activated vortex motion. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Thin films of high transition temperature superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) have been deposited onto YZ-cut LiNbO3 and photolithographically patterned into surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices operating at 50 and 100 MHz center frequencies. Both devices show sharp improvement in SAW transduction efficiency as temperatures are lowered to the superconducting transition temperature of the YBCO electrodes. The magnitude of the improvement is directly dependent on the normal state resistance of the YBCO, and in one case was as high as 12 dB. In both cases, the amplitude change over the entire temperature range is matched nearly exactly by the derived ideal electrode behavior predicted from the aperture width, substrate radiation resistance, and YBCO electrode sheet resistance.

    Notes: Abstract The perpose of this study was to provide a comprehensive description of the anatomy of the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL). The anterior and medial aspects of 4 unpreserved and 16 preserved cadaveric human knees were dissected with particular attention being paid to the relationship of the various layers to one another and to the place of the MPFL within these layers. We confirmed that the MPFL is a distinct structure lying within layer II. Its bulk varies considerably between individuals but not from side to side in a given individual. The visualisation, attachments, and gross morphology of the ligament are described. The attachments of the MPFL and the orientation of its fibres suggest that it may have a role in limiting lateral excursion of the parella. The common attachment of the tendon of the vastus medialis muscle and the ligament to the superomedial patella suggests that there may be a dynamic element to such a stabilishing function.

    Notes: Abstract We reviewed the arthroscopic findings in 16 knees in which a patellectomy had been performed 1–47 years previously (average 15.4 years). The study group consisted of 13 women and 3 men with an average age of 46.3 years (range 24–64 years). The knee symptoms had failed to respond to non-operative treatment and the treating surgeon (R.J.B.) had determined that arthroscopic examination was warranted. Fifteen of the 16 patients had articular cartilage damage, particularly in the medial compartment and trochlear groove. The severity of articular cartilage damage correlated with time since patellectomy, but not with patient age. Apart from the previous patellectomy, no predisposing factors could be identified to account for the frequency and severity of tibiofemoral osteoarthritis in this relatively young group of patients. Our findings suggest that there may be an association between patellectomy and the subsequent development of osteoarthritis.

    Notes: Abstract A radiographic model was developed to investigate the influence of three surgical variables on the change in attachment point distance (CAPD) of a hypothetical graft using the unitunnel technique of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Using three different femoral target points, we tested the hypothesis that varying the angle of knee flexion between 70° and 110° and varying the tibial starting point over a 4-cm range do not result in a significant variation in CAPD. We also tested the hypothesis that the CAPD from 0° to 135° is greater than the CAPD from 0° to 90°. There was a statistically significant correlation (r=0.8465,P〈0.0001) between radiographically estimated and isometer-measured values of CAPD. The tibial starting point and the femoral target point were found to affect the CAPD significantly (P〈0.005). A more proximal tibial starting point was associated with a lower CAPD. Both the center of the anatomic femoral attachment of the ACL, and a point 1 mm medial to the junction of the roof and lateral wall of the femoral intercondylar notch and 6 mm anterior to its posterior margin, were associated with lower CAPD values than a target point 5 mm superior and posterior to the center of the femoral ACL attachment. The angle of knee flexion did not significantly affect the CAPD. The CAPD [0°–135°] was significantly greater than the CAPD [0°–90°] for all combinations of variables (P〈0.0005). An acceptable CAPD can be achieved with the unitunnel technique but it is a technically demanding procedure with a narrow margin for error. A modification of the technique to allow independent selection of tibial and femoral attachments may be preferable. This may be achieved by drilling the tibial tunnel first and then creating the femoral tunnel secondarily using a drill with a reduced-diameter shaft.

    Notes: Abstract Despite changes in rehabilitation protocols, an extension deficit remains an important potential cause of significant morbidity following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. An extension-assisting brace was designed using a limited motion brace and an elastic strap across a fulcrum on the anterior aspect of the knee joint. The effects of the brace were investigated in 40 patients undergoing primary ACL reconstruction using an autogenous central third patellar tendon graft. The patients were randomized either to use the brace in the first 6 weeks postoperatively or to undertake the same accelerated rehabilitation programme but without any brace, and they were reviewed at 4 months postoperatively. The following data were recorded: passive and active extension and flexion deficits compared with the non-operated limb, KT-1000 assessment of anterior laxity and isometric quadriceps and hamstring strength. There was no difference between the two groups for any of the recorded variables. This was largely attributed to satisfactory tunnel placement and emphasis on the restoration of extension and quadriceps function during the early postoperative rehabilitation.

    Notes: Abstract Two studies were undertaken to evaluate the use of EMG biofeedback to encourage hamstring relaxation during KT-1000 measurement of anterior tibial displacement. In study 1, 60 ACL-deficient patients were studied in three groups using 15 lb and 20 lb in each group: in group 1 the patients were simply retested 15 min after the initial test sequence, in group 2 they were initially retested with EMG biofeedback and then again without, and in group 3 they were retested twice with EMG biofeedback. No significant difference in mean anterior tibial displacement was seen between the initial measurements and retest measurements when no EMG biofeedback was used. A significant ¶increase in mean anterior tibial displacement was seen when the retesting was performed with EMG biofeedback. No further increase was seen with repeated retesting with EMG biofeedback. In study 2, 40 patients were evaluated 4–12 months following ACL reconstruction. KT-1000 measurements of anterior tibial displacement of both the operated and non-operated knees were made at 15 lb and 30 lb with and without the use of EMG biofeedback. EMG biofeedback was associated with a significant increase in unilateral measurement of anterior tibial displacement. When side-to-side differences were compared, there was a small but statistically significant increase in anterior tibial displacement with the use of EMG biofeedback. Although the use of EMG biofeedback to encourage hamstring relaxation does increase unilateral measurements of anterior tibial displacement, it does not appear to have a clinically significant effect on measurement of side-to-side difference. It may have a role in testing patients who have difficulty achieving hamstring relaxation or in aiding inexperienced examiners.

    Notes: Abstract The angular dependence of the magnetic moment of the heavy fermion compound UPt3 has been measured near the metamagnetic transition by using a vibrating sample magnetometer for angles between an external magnetic field and the basal plane in the range 0°–50°. The value of magnetic field at which the metamagnetic transition occurs increases with the angle between the applied field and the basal plane. A planar geometry of the transition explains this behavior.
