    Notizen: A capacitively coupled interdigital probe technique is described whereby the electrical characteristics of thin films at arbitrary frequencies in the range from about 100 kHz to beyond 1 GHz may be studied. Patterning of the film, deposition of electrodes, and bonding of electrical leads are unnecessary, so that all measurements are nondestructive and noninvasive. Preliminary measurements of the superconducting transition in thin films of the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7−δ in magnetic fields up to 1.5 T are presented and discussed. They show a large field-dependent peak, attributable to tunneling effects, just below the onset temperature. Anomalies are also seen at higher temperatures, providing evidence of a structural phase transition. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We have measured ultrasonic attenuation and ac susceptibility simultaneously on a UPt3 single crystal, in various constant magnetic fields at 293 MHz, and in zero field at several frequencies. The temperature of the attenuation maximum Tmα appears lower than (or very close to) the susceptibility transition temperature Tcχ. A breakpoint is defined, which occurs always at a lower temperature Tbp than Tmα. The shift of this breakpoint, Tcχ −Tbp, exhibits a small frequency dependence.

    Notizen: Thin films of high transition temperature superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) have been deposited onto YZ-cut LiNbO3 and photolithographically patterned into surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices operating at 50 and 100 MHz center frequencies. Both devices show sharp improvement in SAW transduction efficiency as temperatures are lowered to the superconducting transition temperature of the YBCO electrodes. The magnitude of the improvement is directly dependent on the normal state resistance of the YBCO, and in one case was as high as 12 dB. In both cases, the amplitude change over the entire temperature range is matched nearly exactly by the derived ideal electrode behavior predicted from the aperture width, substrate radiation resistance, and YBCO electrode sheet resistance.

    Notizen: Surface acoustic wave (SAW) velocity and attenuation measurements have been performed on high-temperature superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) thin films (deposited on nonpiezoelectric substrates), and YBCO single crystals. A "bridge" technique is employed in which piezoelectric substrates, patterned with interdigital transducers, are bonded to the sample under investigation. The temperature dependence of 168 MHz SAW attenuation in a single crystal near its superconducting transition has been measured in applied magnetic fields up to 1.6 T. Features are seen above the superconducting transition temperature which may be indicative of a transition in the electric polarization of the material. A field-dependent attenuation peak, seen in the superconducting state, is discussed in terms of the theory of thermally activated vortex motion. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Abstract When a circuit is tested using random or pseudorandom patterns, it is essential to determine the amount of time (test length) required to test it adequately. We present a methodology for predicting different statistics of random pattern test length. While earlier methods allowed estimation only of upper bounds of test length and only for exhaustive fault coverage, the technique presented here is capable of providing estimates of all statistics of interest (including expected value and variance) for all coverage specifications. Our methodology is based on sampling models developed for fault coverage estimation [1]. Test length is viewed as awaiting time on fault coverage. Based on this relation we derive the distribution of test length as a function of fault coverage. Methods of approximating expected value and variance of test length are presented. Accuracy of these approximations can be controlled by the user. A practical technique for predicting expected test length is developed. This technique is based on clustering faults into equal detectability subsets. A simple and effective algorithm for fault clustering is also presented. The sampling model is applied to each cluster independently and the results are then aggregated to yield test lengths for the whole circuit. Results of experiments with several circuits (both ISCAS '85 benchmarks and other practical circuits) are also provided.

    Notizen: Abstract The angular dependence of the magnetic moment of the heavy fermion compound UPt3 has been measured near the metamagnetic transition by using a vibrating sample magnetometer for angles between an external magnetic field and the basal plane in the range 0°–50°. The value of magnetic field at which the metamagnetic transition occurs increases with the angle between the applied field and the basal plane. A planar geometry of the transition explains this behavior.
