Notes: Abstract: There is evidence of abnormalities in the brain-stem monoamine-containing neurons in infants with sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). By taking advantage of the rich innervation of the human basal ganglia by monoam-inergic afferents from cell bodies in the brainstem, we studied the synaptic chemistry of catecholamine and associated neurons of the putamen obtained postmortem from 14 SIDS infants, eight age-matched control infants, and older control subjects of various ages. We found significantly lower concentrations of dopamine and higher homovanillic acid/DA ratios in samples from SIDS infants compared with age-matched control infants. Noradrenaline and 5-hydroxytryptamine were lower in SIDS compared with control subjects, but the difference did not reach statistical significance. There was no clear evidence that dihydroxyphe-nylacetic acid and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid were altered. Immunoblot analysis of striatal tissue showed that samples from infants with SIDS, which exhibited lower DA, also had lower tyrosine hydroxylase protein. Other transmitter-specific neuronal markers were also assessed, including enzymes associated with cholinergic and GABA-containing neurons. We found significantly decreased choline acetyltransferase activities. However, GABA, glutamate, or somatostatin concentrations or monoamine oxidase activities were unchanged in SIDS. We also noted age-dependent changes in brain weights and some synaptic markers by comparing the age-matched infants with older control subjects. Analysis of variance revealed that homovanillic acid, dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, and monoamine oxidase B activities were increased with age. DA and choline acetyltransferase were also found to be positively correlated in putamen. Our findings suggest developmental changes in some transmitter-specific neurons in SIDS that may result from apneic episodes or chronic hypoxia induced before death.

Notes: A rotated beamsplitter cube interferometer has been developed which can measure both the change in reflectivity and the displacement of nontransparent thin films caused by thermal waves. Thermal waves are used to characterize material properties, especially those of thin films, by monitoring the heat propagation in a specimen. Thermal waves cause both a change in the reflectivity of the specimen and a displacement of the specimen surface. By varying the phase difference between the reference and signal arms of an interferometer, a method for detecting and separating the contributions of each of these effects has been developed. This enables the determination of the thermal expansion coefficient of the thin film independent of substrate properties. Data demonstrating the application of this technique on Cu and TiN thin films are presented.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Summary. A 71-year-old patient had been suffering from pain-free obstructive jaundice for 8 weeks. Ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed an inhomogeneous mass (diameter 7 × 6 cm) in the head of the pancreas. In combination with a CA 19–9 of 329 U/l, the findings were highly suggestive of a pancreatic carcinoma. Endoscopic implantation of a pigtail drain into the dilated choledochal duct was performed. A partial duodenopancreatectomy (Whipple's procedure) became necessary because of continuous bleeding with hemodynamic disorders after endoscopic papillotomy. In the histopathological examination a low-grade malignant non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the pancreas (follicular centroblastic-centrocytic) was diagnosed. The differential diagnosis of primary pancreatic lymphoma from pancreatic carcinoma is usually impossible. Neither clinical nor laboratory nor imaging methods indicate to the correct diagnosis. In cases of relatively large pancreatic tumor masses and impression of the pancreatic duct without infiltration, a primary pancreatic lymphoma should be considered and a histological diagnosis by biopsy should be performed.

Notes: Summary The paper presents a three-dimensional approximate solution of a longitudinally vibrating cylinder. It is based on the frequency equation for free waves travelling along an infinitely long cylinder which follows from the radial boundary condition on the lateral surface of the cylinder. An equivalent longitudinal traction is calculated by integration of the normal stresses over the end cross section. The full solution of the longitudinally vibrating rod adapted to given axial boundary conditions is derived. The solution is compared to numerical results, and good agreement is obtained.

Notes: Summary The computation of interior displacements and stresses with the boundary element method (BEM) often requires the evaluation of nearly singular integrals. These integrals arise from the singular behaviour of the kernel functions in the Somigliana identity and the Somigliana stress identity. Treating them numerically in a standard way leads to inaccuracy near the boundary. This effect is always present in the calculation of field variables near the boundary and is called ‘boundary layer effect’. In this paper regularization procedures are proposed which consist of an indirect evaluation of singular integrals and a special coordinate transformation. The proposed procedures eliminate the boundary layer effect for both, the calculation of displacements and stresses. In a numerical example of elastostatics the developed strategies are shown to work. Due to the generality of the proposed procedures they can be extended to any standard boundary element formulation for problems with bounded domains.

Notes: Abstract Annular pancreas is a rare congenital malformation of the pancreas. In about 50% of the cases the malformation is asymptomatic until the third to fifth decade. We report on a 52-year-old male patient who presented with subtotal duodenal and gastric outlet stenosis. Duodenohemipancreatectomy (Whipple's procedure) was performed. The histological examination showed an annular pancreas with complicating inflammatory reactions (tryptic sialadenitis) of the pancreatic head causing additional obstruction. Annular pancreas should be taken into account as a possible cause of adult duodenal obstruction. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is the diagnostic modality of choice, and in combination with computed tomography the diagnosis can be obtained preoperatively in many patients. However, there are still patients in whom the diagnosis can finally be obtained only intraoperatively especially in cases where inflammatory pseudotumors or subtotal duodenal stenosis make ERCP impossible.
