    Notes: The nozzle and the anode of the UCI (University of California, Irvine) z-pinch facility were modified to study the influence of the anode-cathode geometrical structure on the stability of the pinch and the x-ray yield of the pinch. The anode was modified from a honey-comb to a hollow cylinder with a 4-cm diameter and a ∼3.5-mm wall thickness, placed 2 cm below the cathode. The cavity in the center of the cathode was enlarged from 6-mm diameter to 36 mm. The design of the cathode and the anode showed a marked improvement of the pinch stability over the previous design. Both zirconium and carbon-carbon nozzle were used for the Kr and Ne z pinches. After a few tens of shots the Zr nozzle was melted at the edge and the pinch degraded, while the carbon-carbon nozzle did not sustain any damage for more than 300 shots. Some shots showed the di/dt at the implosion is ∼5 times higher than the di/dt at the beginning of the discharge, this has never been obtained at UCI before. This ratio of the initial di/dt to pinch di/dt is a measure of the pinch quality. By serendipity it was found that double gas puff z pinch increased the hard x-ray (〉1 keV) output by about an order of magnitude. The nozzle was then modified to allow double puff operation. A 3.4-mm-diam hole was opened at the center of the nozzle and a plunger was inserted from the top to control the mass of the gas entering the hole. The diagnostics include di/dt coil, soft, and hard x-ray diodes. Soft and hard x-ray emission are both enhanced by the double gas puff z pinch.

    Notes: A compact laser synchrotron source (LSS) is proposed as a means of generating tunable, narrow bandwidth, ultra-short pulses of hard x rays. The LSS is based on the Thomson backscattering of intense laser radiation from a counterstreaming electron beam. Advances in both compact ultra-intense solid-state lasers and high brightness electron accelerators make the LSS an attractive compact source of high brightness pulsed x rays, particularly at photon energies beyond ∼30 keV. The x-ray wavelength is λ[A(ring)]=650 λ0[μm]/Eb2[MeV], where λ0 is the laser wavelength and Eb is the electron beam energy. For Eb=72 MeV and λ0=1 μm, x rays at λ=0.12 A(ring) (100 keV) are generated. The spectral flux, brightness, bandwidth, and pulse structure are analyzed. In the absence of filtering, the spectral bandwidth in the LSS is typically (approximately-less-than)1% and is limited by electron beam emittance and energy spread. Two configurations of the LSS are discussed, one providing high peak power and the other moderate average power x rays. Using present day technology, the LSS can generate picosecond pulses of x rays consisting of (approximately-greater-than)109 photons/pulse with a peak brightness of (approximately-greater-than)1020 photons/s mm2 mrad2 (0.1% BW) and photon energies ranging from 50 to 1200 keV.

    Notes: The stellatron accelerator of the University of California at Irvine (UCI) [Phys. Fluids B 2, 3149 (1990)] was modified to accommodate beam extraction. The magnetic field coils were reconstructed to adapt an extraction port. A fiberglass–graphite–epoxy chamber replaced the glass chamber that cracked frequently during the previous experiment. Improvement in the magnetic field configuration has significantly reduced the current loss during acceleration. A 1.1 kA, 12 MeV electron beam was generated by initially forming a 1.2 kA beam with plasma start-up. The beam radius was 5–7 mm. Beam extraction was performed with two auxiliary pulsed current coils and up to 15% of the beam was extracted from the chamber. The extraction process was analyzed by computational orbit simulations.

    Notes: A simple, fast, reliable diamagnetically driven gas puff valve is described. It offers an extremely quick rise time (∼100 μs) and a large pressure rise rate (∼270 Pa/μs at a distance of 13.5 cm) with an input energy of only 90 J (600 V on a 500 μF capacitor). Because the valve can be operated with such a small input energy, solid-state switching devices are adequate and the operation of the valve will not produce the amount of electrical noise that other valves needing higher energy often do. Our valve achieves high-density puffs at relatively low plenum pressure (380 kPa, 3.8 atm), permitting it to be extremely simple in design and easy to operate. The entire package (valve plus driving circuit) is small in size; it can fit in a volume 4 in. in diameter by 8 in. long. The valve holds about 60 cm3 of gas and has an outlet opening of 1/4 in. in diameter.

    Notes: We describe the investigations of the plasma behavior in three pulsed-power systems: a magnetically insulated ion diode, and plasma opening switch, and a gas-puffed Z pinch. Recently developed spectroscopic diagnostic techniques allow for measurements with relatively high spectral, temporal, and spatial resolutions. The particle velocity and density distributions within a few tens of microns from the dielectric-anode surface are observed using laser spectroscopy. Fluctuating electric fields in the plasma are inferred from anisotropic Stark broadening. For the plasma opening switch experiment, a novel gaseous plasma source was developed which is mounted inside the high-voltage inner conductor. The properties of this source, together with spectroscopic observations of the electron density and particle velocities of the injected plasma, are described. Emission line intensities during the switch operation are discussed. In the Z-pinch experiment, spectral emission-line profiles of various charge-state ions are studied during the implosion phase. Radial velocity distributions are observed from the line Doppler shifts and widths.

    Notes: Recent observations are given for an argon double-shell gas puff imploded with up to 4 MA in 200 ns on the Double Eagle generator [G. B. Frazier et al., Digest of Technical Papers, Fourth IEEE Pulsed Power Conference (IEEE, Piscataway, NJ, 1983), p. 583]. Good K-shell x-ray output with good pinch quality was observed. A novel experimental procedure was used to selectively seed the inner or outer gas plenums with a chlorine tracer. The tracer data provide the first direct experimental evidence that the mass initially closest to the axis is the dominant contributor to the hot core of the radiating pinch. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The first observations of gaseous load implosions with over 15 MA in 〉110 ns on the Z generator [R. B. Spielman et al., Phys. Plasmas 5, 2105 (1998)] are reported. Starting from a diameter of over 8 cm, an argon double-shell Z pinch imploded to under 0.5 cm K-shell emission diameter. With a load mass of 0.8 mg/cm, K-shell x-ray output reached 274±24 kJ in a 15 TW peak power, 12 ns pulse. This record-high yield is consistent with the current-squared scaling predicted for the "efficient" emission regime. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have developed a dual-plenum gas valve coupled to a double shell nozzle for the generation of "shell-on-shell" gas loads in z-pinch plasma radiation source experiments. The gas density profiles of the nozzles have been characterized with laser interferometry. This valve/nozzle combination has been successfully fielded on the Double-EAGLE and Saturn pulsed-power generators. The design and characterization of the shell-on-shell valve/nozzle are presented in this article. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
