    Notes: Germanium (100) crystals, 9° off-axis towards the [011] were exposed to 2.0 Torr of tertiarybutylarsine and 99.0 Torr of hydrogen at 650 °C, then heated to between 450 and 600 °C in vacuum or H2. The resulting surfaces consist of narrow dimer-terminated terraces, with (1×2) and (2×1) domains, that are separated by steps between one and eight atomic layers in height. The distribution of (1×2) and (2×1) domains changes with temperature, exhibiting a pronounced maximum in the (1×2) fraction at 510 °C. These results suggest that the arsenic passivation of germanium is a critical step in gallium arsenide heteroepitaxy. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have investigated the structural and chemical properties of reconstructed Sr/Si(001) surfaces at different Sr coverages using low energy electron diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning tunneling microscopy. The results show that upon low temperature oxidation and subsequent UHV annealing of the Sr/Si(001)-(2×1) surface, a crystalline Sr2SiO4 silicate-like layer formed. Using this layer as a template, single-crystal SrO thin films were grown on Si(001) substrates. Our results provide microscopic and spectroscopic evidence of the formation of a uniform, stable, two-dimensional crystalline silicate that can be used for growth of single-crystal oxides on Si(001) substrates. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Carbon tetrachloride dissociatively adsorbs on the Ga-rich (4×2) reconstruction of GaAs (001) at 200 °C. Upon heating to 440 °C, the chlorine desorbs as GaCl, which etches the surface. Scanning tunneling micrographs reveal that this reaction transforms the (4×2) into a Ga-rich (3×2) structure that is interlaced with As-rich (2×4) phases. The (3×2) is well ordered, while the (2×4) phases exhibit a high degree of disorder. This work establishes the surface reaction pathway for carbon doping of GaAs with CCl4.© 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Dislocations are observed in germanium crystals (9° off axis toward the [011] direction) that have undergone plastic deformation. Optical microscopy reveals that the substrates exhibit a crosshatch pattern, consisting of ridges and trenches that extend in the [011] and [011¯] directions. Further characterization of these features with scanning tunneling microscopy shows that they consist of bands of steps. These bands are created when a group of dislocations emerge onto the crystal surface from the bulk. The dislocations are determined to be type (a/2)〈011〉. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Leaf senescence is a complex developmental process during which essential nutrients are recycled. In order to unravel the biochemical pathways and regulatory mechanisms that underlie this process, it would be valuable to examine the transcriptome associated with leaf senescence. Accordingly, an Arabidopsis thaliana leaf senescence cDNA library with approximately 104 recombinant clones was subjected to large-scale single-pass sequencing. Approximately 6200 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) were obtained, corresponding to 2491 unique genes. These included 134 genes encoding transcription factors and 182 genes whose products are components of signal transduction pathways, such as the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades. A total of 116 of these genes are predicted to be involved in protein turnover, including 75 genes associated with the ubiquitin–proteasome pathway and 35 proteinases. Many of the genes are predicted to encode transporters for ions, amino acids and sugars, consistent with the substantial nutrient recycling during leaf senescence. In addition, this study revealed ESTs for 98 annotated genes for which ESTs did not previously exist and 46 novel transcribed units that have not previously been annotated in the Arabidopsis genome. Approximately one-third of the 2491 genes are predicted to encode proteins with unknown functions. The genes are distributed evenly on the five chromosomes.

    Notes: We studied the impact of delayed leaf senescence on the functioning of plants growing under conditions of nitrogen remobilization. Interactions between cytokinin metabolism, Rubisco and protein levels, photosynthesis and plant nitrogen partitioning were studied in transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) plants showing delayed leaf senescence through a novel type of enhanced cytokinin syn-thesis, i.e. targeted to senescing leaves and negatively auto-regulated (PSAG12–IPT), thus preventing developmental abnormalities. Plants were grown with growth-limiting nitrogen supply. Compared to the wild-type, endogenous levels of free zeatin (Z)- and Z riboside (ZR)-type cytokinins were increased up to 15-fold (total ZR up to 100-fold) in senescing leaves, and twofold in younger leaves of PSAG12–IPT. In these plants, the senescence-associated declines in N, protein and Rubisco levels and photosynthesis rates were delayed. Senescing leaves accumulated more (15N-labelled) N than younger leaves, associated with reduced shoot N accumulation (–60%) and a partially inverted canopy N profile in PSAG12–IPT plants. While root N accumulation was not affected, N translocation to non-senescing leaves was progressively reduced. We discuss potential consequences of these modified sink–source relations, associated with delayed leaf senescence, for plant productivity and the efficiency of utilization of light and minerals.

Computerized postural sway measurement systems have been used recently in human physiology and pharmacology for determining postural stability, but their applicability for the assessment of the effects of exposure to neurotoxic agents is lacking.2. We have examined the feasibility of using a computerized postural sway measurement system to assess the postural sway parameters of manganese exposed workers compared with a control group.3. Sway parameter data were collected using a kislter multicomponent measuring platform (Type 9281B) connected to vicon motion analysis system for 13 exposed and 16 control subjects.4. Significant differences in several of the sway parameters (Px, Py—mean distance (mm), from the centre of the platform along the X-axis [anterior-posterior movement] and Y-axis [lateral movement], respectively) between the exposed and control groups were observed even after adjustment for possible confounders. Computerized postural sway measurement system may be a useful method of assessing workers exposed to neurotoxic agents affecting posture.

    Notes: Hexavalent chromate in cement is the commonest cause of allergic contact dermatitis, especially among construction workers. Over the past decades, there has been a general decline in the prevalence of chromate allergy among construction workers. We suspect that a change in the constituents of cement, resulting in the lowering of the hexavalent chromate, contributed to the decline. Slag (free from hexavalent chromate) from the iron-quenched, blast furnace process has been used as a substitute for clinker (which contains high hexavalent chromate) in manufacturing cement As a result, the slag has diluted the hexavalent chromate content of cement. Our analytical study showed that slag is free from hexavalent chromate and that the hexavalent chromate of clinker ranged from 6–17 μg/g. Substituting slag for clinker resulted in dilution of hexavalent chromate in the cement. The hexavalent chromate content of cement declines proportionately with increasing proportion of slag, e.g., a cement containing 5% slag has a total hexavalent chromate concentration of 17.5 μg/g. whereas increasing the proportion of slag to 60%; reduced the hexavalent chromate content to 7.1 μg/g. in the same cement.
