    Notes: Abstract Re-certification of the absolute isotopic composition of the natural lithium isotopic reference material (IRM), IRMM-016, requires measurements calibrated by means of synthetic mixtures of highly enriched lithium isotopes. Ten such mixtures were prepared by weighing and mixing of two well characterised, isotopically enriched, Li2CO3 compounds. The starting materials, 99.9981% enriched 6Li, and 99.9937% enriched 7Li, were purified by ion exchange, and the purified materials converted from LiOH to Li2CO3 by reaction with CO2. Ten new mixtures were prepared by mixing different weighed amounts of these dissolved Li2CO3 carrier compounds. The compounds had an estimated level of impurities of 100 ± 100 μg · g–1 (expanded uncertainty with a coverage factor of 2). In the ten mixtures, the n(6Li)/n(7Li) ratio varies from 0.025 to 14 and the achieved expanded relative uncertainty on the amount ratio prepared is typically 2 · 10–4. These mixtures were then used to determine the correction factor, K, for mass discrimination of the measurement procedure and instrument concerned.

Upon heating to 673 K, the chlorine desorbs from these sites as GaCl, thereby reducing the Ga coverage. Scanning tunneling micrographs reveal that GaCl desorption produces a highly disordered (2×4)surface, and transforms the (4×2) into a new (3×2) reconstruction. The (3×2) surface appears to be stabilized by carbon incorporation.

    Notes: Abstract  In three monkeys trained to finely grade grip force in a visuomotor step-tracking task, the effect of the context on neuronal force correlates was quantitatively assessed. Three trial types, which differed in force range, number, and direction of the force steps, were presented pseudo-randomly and cued with the color of the cursor serving as feedback of the exerted force. Quantitative analyses were made on 85 neurons with similar discharge patterns in the three trial types and significant linear positive (54 cells) or negative (31 cells) correlation coefficients between firing rate and force. An analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) showed that the population slopes for 2-step were steeper than for 3-step trials. Another ANCOVA at the population level, computed on the differences in firing rate and force between force steps, persistently disclosed a significant effect of trial type. For the first two force steps, the differences in firing rate were significantly larger in the 2-step than in the 3-step increase trials. Further analyses revealed that neither the force range nor the number of steps was a unique factor. A small group of neurons was tested in an additional trial series with a uniform cue for all three trials, leading to either a loss of context-dependency or to unexpected changes in firing rate. This demonstrates that the cue color was an important instruction for task performance and neuronal activity. The most important findings are that the context-dependent changes were occurring ”on-line”, and that neurons displaying context-dependency were found in all three lateral premotor cortex hand regions and in the primary motor cortex. Finger muscle activity did not show any context dependency. The context-dependent effect leads to a normalization of the cortical activity. The advantage of normalization is discussed and mechanisms for the gain regulation are proposed.

    Notes: A pilot-scale belt type osmotic contactor was designed and installed in a continuous osmotic dehydration process to obtain maximum water removal from fruits and vegetables with a minimum contact time. The carrot was chosen as a representative vegetable and a ternary mixture of sucrose/sodium chloride/water with total solids concentration of about 50 to 55% was chosen for the osmotic solution. The experimental results showed that the optimum condition was found to require a 44% sucrose/7% sodium chloride aqueous solution with 16 min of contact time which gave a water loss of 26% and a highest ratio of water loss over solids gain (about 9) among different treatments. It is concluded that the continuous type of contactor can have potential applications in the food industry.

    Notes: Hydrogen adsorption on the c(4×4), (2×4), (2×6), and (4×2) reconstructions of GaAs (001) have been characterized by internal-reflection infrared spectroscopy. The infrared spectra contain up to 15 bands due to the stretching vibrations of arsenic hydrides (2150–1950 cm−1), terminal gallium hydrides (1950–1800 cm−1), and bridging gallium hydrides (1800–950 cm−1). These features arise from hydrogen adsorption on arsenic and gallium dimers, and second-layer arsenic and gallium atoms. The large number of peaks observed indicates that the surface atoms exist in a variety of different chemical environments.© 1999 American Institute of Physics.

The (3×2) is well ordered, while the (2×4) phases exhibit a high degree of disorder.
