Notes: We have developed a high-density source of metastable neon and have selectively quenched both metastable species using a standing-wave dye laser. The source is compact, stable, and produces an average intensity of 3.6×1014 sr−1 s−1 and a density on target of 7.7×106 cm−3.

Notes: A high-voltage variable resistor was designed, built, and implemented to modify an ion-energy spectrometer for the study of ion–atom collisions in which the projectiles change charge. The resistor is remotely switchable from 0 to 2050 MΩ and has a voltage rating of 200 kV. The design criteria and the electrical and mechanical details of the apparatus are discussed. The design and construction of an ancillary device, comprising two precision resistive-divider voltmeters, are also discussed.

Notes: We report operational and construction details of a simplified GaAs polarized electron source. It is contained in a modified 4.63 in. Conflat four-way cross, and uses a single 56 l/s turbomolecular pump. The design incorporates multiple cesiators to extend source lifetime, a new spring-clamp GaAs crystal mounting design to provide uniform crystal heating, and a very simple tubular 90° electrostatic deflector. We also discuss matters related to preparing, heat cleaning, and activating the GaAs crystal. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The design and operation of a simple inline optical electron polarimeter is presented. It is based on exchange excitation of ground state neon atoms. The electron polarization is determined from the degree of circular polarization of the subsequent 2p53p 3D3→2p53s 3P2 (6402 A(ring)) fluorescence. This device can characterize both longitudinally and transversely polarized electron beams in a nondestructive fashion, and is inexpensive and easily constructed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Energy spread and extracted current measurements are presented for five different types of ion sources: hot cathode, cold cathode, magnetron, microwave, and electron cyclotron resonance (ECR). The measurements were performed with a 45° parallel-plate energy analyzer with a resolution of better than 0.5 eV at 500 eV incident energy. Energy spreads ranged from 0.5 to 4 eV, while total extracted beam currents ranged from 2 to 30 μA. Beam currents due specifically to protons, 3He++ ions, and H+2 ions are also presented. The ECR and magnetron sources gave the best overall performance. These, along with the energy analyzer, are currently being used in experiments to study ion-atom collision physics. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In standard Mott electron polarimetry using thin gold film targets, extrapolation procedures must be used to reduce the experimentally measured asymmetries A to the values they would have for scattering from single atoms. These extrapolations involve the dependence of A on either the gold film thickness t or the maximum detected electron energy loss in the target ΔE. Using a concentric cylindrical-electrode Mott polarimeter, we have studied and compared these two types of extrapolations over the electron energy range 20–100 keV. The potential systematic errors which can result from such procedures are analyzed in detail, particularly with regard to the use of various fitting functions in thickness extrapolations, and the failure of perfect energy-loss discrimination to yield accurate polarizations when thick foils are used. A critical discussion of previous work on this subject is presented.

Notes: Electron polarimeters based on Mott scattering are extensively used in atomic and molecular, solid state, nuclear, and high-energy physics. This use stems from the increasing realization that much additional information concerning many physical processes can be obtained through spin-dependent measurements. In this review we discuss the basic physics and application of Mott polarimetry. A number of different Mott polarimeter designs are described that illustrate the wide range of operating energies (10 eV–1 MeV) and geometries that can be used in such instruments. The calibration of Mott polarimeters is discussed together with the potential sources of systematic error that can arise and that can limit measurement accuracies. The aim is to present a comprehensive practical guide to Mott polarimetry and the capabilities of the technique.

Notes: Using the computer program SIMION 6, we have studied the effects of spurious insulator charging on the trajectories of electrons through electrostatic tube lenses. We considered lens elements with flat ends, spaced a distance g apart, whose inner diameter D=10g. For the standard cases of drift tubes, two-element lenses, and einzel lenses, we found that charging effects are eliminated if t/g〉3.5, where t is the distance between the lens inner diameter and the charged spacing insulator. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary Volume recovery of polycarbonate samples has been investigated by dilatometric and density measurements near ambient temperature. The volume changes with time have been measured either after heating above Tg and quenching, or after cold drawing at ambient temperature. Cold drawing drastically increases the volume recovery rate of polycarbonate, as compared with the rate observed after quenching. This is quite similar to the behavior previously reported on physical aging measured by dynamic mechanical tests (1). The observed decrease of specific volume after cold drawing can be explained by a densification effect due to molecular orientation.
