Notes: Abstract Use of peroxydicarbonates as free-radical initiators for the polymerization of vinyl chloroformate (VOCC1), in bulk and in solution, leads to high molecular weight polymers. Copolymerization parameters of VOCC1 with vinyl acetate have been determined in methylene chloride, at 35°C, with dicyclohexyl peroxydicarbonate as initiator

Notes: Abstract Poly(vinyl carbamates) and poly(vinyl carbonates) of high molecular weight have been obtained by polymerization of the corresponding monomers prepared from vinyl chloroformate. Poly(vinyl carbonates) can also be prepared by chemical modification of poly(vinyl chloroformate) with alcohols and phenols. Copolymerization parameters of phenyl vinyl carbonate with vinyl acetate have been determined in methylene chloride, at 35°C, with dicyclohexyl peroxydicarbonate as initiator.

Notes: Abstract The conductance behavior of potassium tetraphenylboride and of sodium and potassium tetraphenylborides complexed by macroheterobicycles was studied in tetrahydrofuran over a temperature range of −70 to +20°C. Stokes' radii of potassium and of alkaline cryptates were compared with ionic radii. The conductance data were analyzed by a more careful method than that usually used for this solvent. This leads to an interpretation of the physical meaning of the distance parameter in agreement with Bjerrum's concept for the distinction between short- and long-range electrostatic interactions.

Notes: Abstract The chemical modification of poly(vinyl chloroformate) and of its copolymers with compounds containing labile hydrogen atoms like amines, phenols, alcohols and 2-oxazolidone as well as with potassium cyanide and potassium fluoride has been investigated. Phase transfer catalysis conditions lead to soluble modified polymers with good substitution yields.

Notes: (2S,3S)-3-methyl- and 3-isopropylaspartic acids were synthesized by bioconversion of the corresponding alkylfumarates (mesaconate and 3-isopropylfumarate) using β-methylaspartase from cell-free extracts of Clostridium tetanomorphum. Optically pure (2S,3S)-3-alkylaspartic acids were transformed in several steps to benzyl (3S,4R)-3-alkylmalolactonates without any racemization of the two chiral centers. These optically active α,β-substituted-β-lactones were polymerized by anionic ring opening polymerization yielding optically active semi-crystalline polyesters. 13C NMR analysis of poly[benzyl β-3-isopropylmalate] in CDCl3 has shown that only the iso-type stereosequence is present in the polymer, indicating that the macromolecular chain is constituted by the only units of benzyl β-(2S,3S)-3-isopropylmalate monomer. The polymerization reaction was done without any racemization of the two stereogenic centers as in the case of benzyl (3S,4R)-3-methylmalolactonate. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: The synthesis of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) by anionic polymerization of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) in aqueous emulsion using an emulsifying agent acting also as initiator (benzyldimethyldodecylammonium hydroxide) is described. Stable emulsions of α,ω-dihydroxy PDMS with an easily controlled molar mass (up to 15 000), a low polydispersity index and high yields were obtained. The amount of cyclics formed (essentially D4 to D7) is lower than that observed in bulk. Kinetics analysis and computerized simulations are in good agreement with a reaction scheme involving simultaneous polyaddition/polycondensation processes. At high monomer consumption, polycondensation predominates leading to a broadening of the molecular weight distribution (MWD). The apparent rate constants of initiation, propagation and condensation at various temperatures and the corresponding activation energies were determined.

Notes: Summary The anionic polymerization and copolymerization of butyl and benzyl malolactonates initiated with potassium acetate/dibenzo-18-crown-6 or [222] complex have been studied at 40°C in bulk and in dichloromethane and tetrahydrofuran solutions. Kinetics and polymer molecular weights were followed by SEC. In bulk and for conversion below 30%, molecular weights are close to those calculated for a living process then the conversion increase leads to a significant discrepancy between theoretical and measured molecular weights. In solution, side reactions take place significantly and no evident relationship between molecular weight and initiator concentration can be established, even at low conversion. Same situation was observed in the case of block copolymers synthesis. At last, evidence for transfer reactions has been shown by using model reactions.

    Notes: The asymmetric lactone (3 S, 4 R)-3-methyl-4-benzyloxycarbonyl-2-oxetanone (6) was anionically polymerized to give an insoluble, crystalline, highly isotactic polymer with (2 S, 3 S)-benzyl β-3-methylmalate repeating units. Solubility was achieved by copolymerization of 6 with the recemic (R, S)-butyl malolactonate (7). The semicrystalline copolymer was characterized (M̄n = 107 000, Tg = 29,6°C, Tm = 161°C, [α] = 1,5 deg · dm-1 · g-1 · cm3) and its stereosequence investigated by 13C NMR.
