Notes: Valence switching at Eu-Si interfaces is demonstrated by resonant photoemission during repeated oxidation-reduction cycles performed by room-temperature O2 exposure and mild heating. The Eu2+↔Eu3+ transitions are accompanied by Fermi level switching associated with changes in the stoichiometry of the surface heterostructure. The ability to cycle between two well-defined magnetic states at a surface may be attractive in technological applications.

Notes: [Auszug] Results from a prospective sero-epidemiological study initiated in Uganda in 1971 indicate that children with high antibody titres to Epstein-Barr virus structural antigens are at high risk of developing Burkitt's lymphoma. These findings strongly support a causal relationship between the ...

Notes: Summary A Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) patient who sustained remission for more than 14 years after chemotherapy was monitored by means of serial serum samplings. The sera were titrated for antibodies against the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated cell membrane antigen (MA), viral capsid antigens (VCA), early antigen complex (EA R/D), and nuclear antigen (EBNA), and also for reactivity in the antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) test. The initial serological profile corresponded to that of most BL patients with active disease. During remission, it changed to resemble that of normal persons with persistent, latent EBV infection, at least qualitatively. The prognostic and biological implications of the titer levels and their changes are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Eine Reihe von Viren erzeugt unter natürlichen oder experimentellen Bedingungen Tumoren in Tieren.
Notes: Summary Several viruses induce tumors in animals under experimental or natural conditions. It is likely therefore that some human malignancies are also caused by viruses. Proof of this hypothesis can be provided only by indirect evidence based on the following criteria: (1) detection of viral antigens or viral genetic information in a given tumor; (2) transformation of normal human cells by the virus in tissue culture; (3) induction of tumors in animals by the virus; and (4) demonstration of enhanced titers of antibodies to the virus in patients bearing the tumor. These criteria have been fulfilled to support a causal relationship of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in Burkitt's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. It is clear, however, that factors of a genetic, immunologic or environmental nature must play an additional role because EBV, the cause of infectious mononucleosis, is widely disseminated yet development of the tumors is a rare event.

Notes: Summary Fifty-six patients with a clinical and laboratory diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis who had not been ill for more than seven days, were randomised for peroral treatment with acyclovir (800 mg five times daily) or placebo for seven days in a double blind trial. Clinical, virological and immunological parameters were monitored in each patient for six months. During treatment, shedding of Epstein-Barr virus' as assessed in 36 patients, was significantly reduced (p〈0.001). However, virus production in the oropharynx returned to pre-treatment levels one week after the cessation of therapy. Virus was detected in 35 patients at enrollment and in 28 of 36 patients at the six-month control. No effect on the clinical course of the disease was noticed. The virus-specific antibody response was also unaffected. A significant reduction in spontaneous outgrowth ofin vivo Epstein-Barr virus-infected B-lymphocytes was found at 180 days after treatment in four acyclovir-treated patients compared to six controls (p〈0.001). In another three patients with over-whelming clinical symptoms causing airway obstruction and/or disseminated intravascular coagulopathy, treatment with intravenous acyclovir (10 mg/kg three times daily) was combined with prednisolone (0.7 mg/kg daily) for ten days. Virus shedding ceased transiently during treatment, but returned to initial levels within one week. A dramatic clinical effect on the pharyngeal oedema and general health of the two patients with airway obstruction was noticed, but was much less evident in a patient with intravascular coagulopathy.

Notes: Abstract Immunologic studies were performed in five fathers and nine mothers of patients with Chediak-Higashi Syndrome (CHS). Antibody response to Epstein-Barr virus capsid antigen was higher than in normal controls. Antibodies to diffuse component of the early antigen were not detected and serum antibodies to the restricted component of the early antigen were observed in 64% of the subjects studied. Low natural killer activity and increased proportions of OKT8 positive cells were increased. These data indicate that immunologic alterations similar to those seen in CHS patients can be observed in their asymptomatic parents.
