Notizen: [Auszug] We now record a synthesis of potash feldspar, which gave a high yield within sixteen hours in the temperature interval 195-200° C. Synthetic leucite (KAlSi2O6), sodium and potassium carbonates and water were mixed and introduced into a steel auto-clave of 20 c.c. internal capacity. Sufficient ...

Notizen: Summary The sequence of development of cell layers in the neocortex of the tammar has been followed from 24 days gestation to 213 days postnatal. The tammar is born at 27 days gestation and the major period of its development occurs during the subsequent 250 days, most of this time being spent within the pouch. Although the pattern of differentiation of the cell layers appears to resemble that described for many Eutherian mammals, the neocortex is at an embryonic 2 layered stage at birth and a cortical plate is not present throughout the telencephalon until 10–15 days postnatal. A transient subplate zone, presenting a characteristic appearance with widely spaced rows of cells aligned parallel to the cortical surface, develops between 20 and 70 days postnatal, but no secondary proliferative region is seen in the subventricular zone of the dorso-lateral wall. Preliminary experiments with (3H)-thymidine injections indicate that the cortical plate follows the “inside-out” pattern of development described in many Eutherian mammals and that the oldest neurons are found in the parallel cell rows of the subplate zone. The importance of the late differentiation of the neocortex in relation to the time of birth and the resulting usefulness of the tammar as an experimental model of cortical development is discussed.

Notizen: Summary A fetuin-like glycoprotein (FLG) has been shown to be present in early cortical plate cells in the developing brain of the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii). The developmental sequence of the occurrence of glycoprotein-positive fibres and cells in the dorsolateral telencephalic wall from newborn to day 40 is described. The level of FLG in CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) and plasma of the tammar wallaby has also been measured during pouch life. The presence of FLG in early postnatal fibre systems and in some cells in the primordial plexiform layer, as well as in early cortical plate cells of the tammar is similar to that of fetuin in fetal brain in sheep, pig and cow, and α2HS glycoprotein in human fetal brain. The sequence of appearance of FLG-positive cells during neocortical development in the tammar is strikingly similar to that of a transient population of early cortical plate cells previously described in fetal cat and sheep cortex. During postnatal development, levels of FLG in tammar plasma and CSF follow a pattern different from that of other species. The developmental expression of all three related glycoproteins in their respective species is discussed.

Notizen: Abstract The diffusional water permeability (P d) of the red blood cell (RBC) membrane of rat, rabbit and sheep, representing some animal species introduced to Australia, has been monitored, by a Mn2+-doping 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NR) technique using a high-field spectometer operating at 400 MHz. In order to make comparisons with previous measurements on the same species (performed at 25 MHz) an analysis of the influence of instrumental parameters and of the state of blood oxygenation was performed on samples of rat and rabbit blood. It was found that by using a short interpulse delay (around 100 µs) in the Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill sequence, and by performing the measurements of the transverse relaxation time of the water in the cell interior (T 2i) on packed cells (haematocrit 〉95%), the values of the water exchange time (T e) obtained with a high-field spectrometer are comparable with those obtained by using a low-field NMR spectrometer. The values of the diffusional water permeability (P d), calculated from the T e values, were, at 24.6°C around 10 × 10−3 cm/s in case of rat and rabbit RBC and around 5 × 10−3 cm/s for sheep RBC; at 37°C the P d values were around 16 × 10−3 cm/s for rat RBC, 14 × 10−3 cm/s for rabbit RBC and 7 × 10−3 cm/s for sheep RBC. These values are very close to the P d values previously reported for the European counterparts of these species. There were no significant differences in the P d values between laboratory rabbits and wild rabbits, or between castrated males, pregnant or nonpregnant females. These results suggest that no changes in the RBC water permeability are correlated with marked alterations in the habitat of animal species introduced to Australia or by sex hormone status. If the NMR instrument-parameters are carefully chosen then comparative studies of RBC water permeability in different laboratories, at separate locations and using different instruments are meaningful.

Notizen: Summary The ductus epididymidis of the tammar is lined by an epithelium composed of principal, mitochondria-rich, apical and basal cells, and intraepithelial leucocytes. The epithelium is structurally differentiated into 6 zones referred to as the initial segment, middle segment (3 subdivisions) and terminal segment (2 subdivisions). The occurrence of the initial, middle and terminal segments corresponds quite closely to the anatomical differentiation of the epididymis into a head, body and tail. The initial segment epithelium in the tammar is lower and has shorter and more slender stereocilia than in other mammals which have been described. Otherwise, the structure of the epithelium has similar characteristics in the tammar to that described in other mammals. Spermatozoa begin to develop the capacity for motility within the initial segment, but only show structural signs of maturation in the middle segment. The sperm head rotates through 90 degrees in the proximal subdivision of the middle segment. The cytoplasmic droplet is detached and spermatozoa develop the capacity for motility in the middle subdivision of the middle segment. The cytoplasmic droplets are phagocytosed by the epididymal epithelium of the middle segment. Sperm storage appears to be the main function of the terminal segment.
