    Notes: Lattice-matched p-doped GaAs–Ga0.51In0.49P quantum well intersub-band photodetectors with three different well widths have been grown on GaAs substrates by metal-organic chemical-vapor deposition and fabricated into mesa structures. The photoresponse cutoff wavelength varies between 3.5 and 5.5 μm by decreasing the well width from 50 down to 25 A(ring). Dark current measurements as a function of temperature reveal activation energies for thermionic emission that closely correspond to measured cutoff wavelengths. Experimental results are in reasonable agreement with Kronig–Penney calculations. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: P-doped GaAs-GaInP quantum wells have been grown on GaAs substrate by gas source molecular beam epitaxy. Structural quality has been evidenced by x-ray diffraction. A narrow low-temperature photoluminescence full width at half-maximum has been measured. Strong hole intersubband absorption has been observed at 9 μm, and its dependence on light polarization has been investigated.

    Notes: Background limited infrared photodetection has been achieved up to 100 K at normal incidence with p-type GaAs/Ga0.71In0.29As0.39P0.61 quantum well intersubband photodetectors grown by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. Photoresponse covers the wavelength range from 2.5 μm up to 7 μm. The device shows photovoltaic response, the cutoff wavelength increases slightly with bias, and the responsivity increases nonlinearly with bias. These effects are attributed to an asymmetric quantum well profile. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We demonstrate quantum well infrared photodetectors based on a GaAs/Ga0.51In0.49P superlattice structure grown by gas-source molecular beam epitaxy. Wafers were grown with varying well widths. Wells of 40, 65, and 75 Å resulted in peak detection wavelengths of 10.4, 12.8, and 13.3 μm with a cutoff wavelength of 13.5, 15, and 15.5 μm, respectively. The measured peak and cutoff wavelengths match those predicted by eight band theoretical analysis. Measured dark currents were lower than equivalent GaAs/AlGaAs samples. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The aim of this experiment was to examine the effects of maximal strength training with emphasis on neural adaptations on strength- and endurance-performance for endurance trained athletes. Nineteen male cross-country skiers about 19.7 ± 4.0 years of age and a maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) of 69.4 ± 2.2 mL × kg−1 × min−1 were randomly assigned to a training group (n = 9) or a control group (n = 10). Strength training was performed, three times a week for 8 weeks, using a cable pulley simulating the movements in double poling in cross-country skiing, and consisted of three sets of six repetitions at a workload of 85% of one repetition maximum emphasizing maximal mobilization of force in the concentric movement. One repetition maximum improved significantly from 40.3 ± 4.5 to 44.3 ± 4.9 kg. Time to peak force (TPF) was reduced by 50 and 60% on two different submaximal workloads. Endurance performance measured as time to exhaustion (TTE) on a double poling ski ergometer at maximum aerobic velocity, improved from 6.49 to 10.18 min; 20.5% over the control group. Work economy changed significantly from 1.02 ± 0.14 to 0.74 ± 0.10 mL × kg−0.67 × min−1. Maximal strength training with emphasis on neural adaptations improves strength, particularly rate of force development, and improves aerobic endurance performance by improved work economy.

    Notes: SUMMARY– The distribution of volatile solutes between two immiscible solvents can be determined by a study of the vapor pressures in the corresponding single solvent systems, since the partition coefficient is related to the Henry's constants: Kp= k2k12. Application of this principle makes possible the gas chromatographic determination of partition coefficients involving nonvolatile solvents. The method was applied to a solvent pair consisting of paraffin oil and aqueous sodium sulfate. An approximate semilogarithmic relationship exists between the partition coefficient and number of carbon atoms within each homologous series of aldehydes, ketones, alcohols and esters. Saturation with sodium sulfate increased the partial pressure of volatiles from 12 to 20 times. The partial heat of vaporization of volatiles in paraffin oil decreased with increasing temperature and was appreciably smaller than that of the pure compound at its boiling point. These observations may be utilized in quantifying food volatiles in operations involving extraction and gas stripping prior to analysis.

    Notes: SUMMARY— Volatile components of three varieties of tomatoes processed in plain tin and enamel can linings at 0, 1, 4 and 8 months storage time were determined. A recently developed extraction method was used for separation and collection of volatiles free of moisture. This method allowed the study of small quantities of materials in a reasonable time. Multiple sampling of the vapor aliquots permitted qualitative and quantitative analysis.The greatest qualitative and quantitative differences in volatile composition were noted between the raw and heat processed samples. Methyl sulfide which was absent in the fresh fruit was formed during the heat process. The concentrations of acetaldehyde, acetone, methanol, and hexanal were significantly altered by processing. Differences between varieties were due to varying quantities of individual constituents but quantitative differences between can lining were less apparent.

    Notes: -The effects of storage at 10, 20, and 27.5°C on the bacteriological quality and pH of living oyster and clam shellstock was studied. Bacteriological indices used were coliform MPN, fecal coliform MPN, and 35°C plate counts. Twelve lots of each oyster species and eleven lots of each clam species were studied. No distinct seasonal patterns in bacteriological changes were found. The 35°C plate count showed the most consistent response, the rate of increase being more rapid at the higher temperatures. Coliform MPN changes were less consistent in their response to temperature, and patterns of change were observed in different species. The fecal coliform MPN showed the greatest stability, with increases occurring only at 27.5°C. The pH changed little at any of the three temperatures.
