    Notes: Abstract: The general properties of one-dimensional large Fröhlich polarons in motion are investigated with the previous extended coherent states where two-phonon correlations are considered. As a result, the polaron energy, velocity, effective mass, and average number of virtual phonons as a function the polaron total momentum are evaluated in a wide range of the coupling constant. In addition, rich information about virtual phonons emitted by the electron in motion is obtained. More importantly, some intrinsic features of 1D moving polarons are presented for the first time, which may also be suited to moving polarons in more than one dimensions.

    Notes: Abstract A study was conducted to assess the belief systems of the general public concerning the appropriate treatments for mental disorders and correlates of these belief systems. The study was based on the results of a household survey of the general public in Australia, using a national random sample of 2,031 adults aged 18–74 years. Respondents were given a vignette describing either a person with depression or one with schizophrenia, and were asked for their opinions about the helpfulness of various professional and non-professional treatments for the person described. A principal components analysis of the helpfulness ratings gave three factors: a Medical factor with high loadings on all drug treatments (exceptVitamins) and onPsychiatric ward andECT; a Psychological factor with high loadings onCounsellor, Social worker, Phone counselling, Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Psychotherapy andHypnosis; and a Lifestyle factor with high loadings onClose family, Close friends, Naturopath, Vitamins, Physical activity andGet out more. The same factors emerged from ratings of the two vignettes. Mean scores on scales constructed from the items with high loadings showed that the public tend to have a negative view of medical treatments and a positive view of psychological and lifestyle ones. However, medical treatments were rated more negatively for depression than for schizophrenia, psychological treatments were rated more positively for schizophrenia, and lifestyle treatments more positively for depression. Age, sex and education of respondents showed few associations with scores on the scales, although the better educated were more in favour of psychological treatments for both depression and schizophrenia and were less opposed to medical treatments for schizophrenia. Respondents who had suffered from the symptoms described in the schizophrenia vignette were more negative towards medical treatments. These findings about public belief systems could have implications for the provision of treatment: where there is a discrepancy in belief system between the patient and the clinician there may be poor adherence to treatment.

    Notes: Abstract  With regard to the C0 plate bending elements, the constraints resulting from the Kirchhoff condition are separated into two sets. The first set is called the zero θ constraint and should be released so that there is no shear locking. The second set is called the w-θ constraint and should be imposed to determine the element shear strain. We take the line segment integral of the Kirchhoff condition to establish the rational version of w-θ constraint which ensures the resulting element to pass the patch test. In such a way, the 4, 8 and 9-node C0 bending models are presented as a general formulation. The resulting elements, in particular the 9-node one, show excellent numerical performance.

    Notes: Abstract Considerably improved flux pinning and critical current density J c values have been achieved in Y-deficient Y-123 superconductors by directional solidification in air. In comparison with the regular Y-123 composition, Y-deficient one also has an orthorhombic structure and Y-123 main crystal phase remains in it. Whereas with the shortage of Y, Y1−x Ba2Cu3O7−y can be regarded as (YBa2Cu3)1−x O7−t(Ba2Cu3) x O t−y or (YBa2Cu3O7−z )(□ x YO z−y ), so there may develop several kinds of microstructure defects as pinning sites in the system, such as highly dense, fine-scale, and faultlike defects, as well as localized superstructure, which are able to induce the increasing in flux pinning and J c values in higher external magnetic fields. This kind of simple nonstoichiometric route could lead to a commercial technique for flux-pinning enhancement in Y-123 bulk materials.

    Notes: Abstract The simple design of traditional spinner flasks makes the on-line estimation of cellular metabolism impossible. An on-line estimation system has been developed and used for the monitoring of oxygen uptake rate (OUR) for insect cells growing in a modified spinner flask. Neglect of oxygen desorption from culture media is a common source of error in OUR measurements for Sf21 cells. Therefore, an algorithm was developed to compensate for the affect of such desorption process on the determination of OUR. A modified spinner flask was successfully used as a low-volume bioreactor for insect cell cultivation and the OUR measurement developed here is both convenient and reliable.
