Notes: Magnetic garnet films of composition (Nd,Lu,Bi)3(Fe,Al,Ga)5O12 are grown by liquid-phase epitaxy on [111] oriented substrates of gadolinium gallium garnet. They have positive uniaxial anisoptropy and support lattices of parallel stripe domains. A monomode optical rib waveguide is prepared by photolithography and ion-beam etching parallel to the (112¯) direction, which is the preferred direction of the stripe domains. A magnetic domain pattern can be created such that a domain wall is located at the rib center while the adjacent walls stick to the flanks of the rib. At a wavelength of 1.3 μm a nonreciprocal phase shift of the guided fundamental transverse electric mode is observed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Over the last decade various parametric approaches toward modelling segmented perception-preference structures such as combined MDS and latent class procedures have been introduced. These methods, however, are not tailored for qualitative data describing consumers' redundant and fuzzy perceptions of brand images. A completely different method is based on topology-sensitive vector quantization (VQ) for consumers-by-brands-by-attributes data. It maps the segment-specific perceptual structures into bubble-pie-bar charts with multiple brand positions demonstrating perceptual distinctiveness or similarity. Though the analysis proceeds without any distributional assumptions, it allows for significance testing. The application of exploratory and inferential data processing steps to the same database is statistically sound and particularly attractive for market structure analysts. A brief outline of the VQ method is followed by a sample study with travel market data, which proved to be particularly troublesome for conventional processing tools.

Notes: Summary The results as outlined in this paper are based on a 10-year-investigation by the Tobacco Research Institute, Forchheim. Emissions into the environment may lead to higher Cd-content of tobacco and other crops. Geological soil conditions may influence the soil/plant — Cd-transfer. Genetically dependent variety differences in Cd-uptake can be found in field as well as in greenhouse experiments. A comparison between domestic and foreign leaf tobaccos showed Cd-levels at the same order of magnitude. Analyses of German cigarette brands (with and without filter) demonstrated that 0.05 γ Cd/cigarette are transferred from cigarette tobacco into the mainstream smoke, corresponding to a mean transfer rate of 5.1%.

Notes: Abstract In a cellular mobile radio system an SDMA (Space Division Multiple Access) component can be implemented for the reuse of radio channels physically incorporated by time, frequency or code slots. Since SDMA is based on the spatial separation of different users operating in the same channel, a DOA (Direction of arrival) sensitive channel allocation scheme is essential for maximizing system capacity. In this paper we present the Eigenvector method, a computationally efficient algorithm to do this job. We also present simulation results on the Eigenvector method operating in a typical urban mobile radio cell. The simulated blocking probabilities are then used to predict the capacity increase which can be expected after adding an SDMA component to a conventional mobile radio system.

Notes: Summary 42 to 75 pCi cesium-137 and 702 to 903 pCi strontium-90 per kg were found in samples of tobacco of German origin and from commercial cigarette. The presence of these radionuclides in tobacco is attributed to the fallout from nuclear explosions. Taking into consideration mean transfer rates of the radionuclides in the main stream smoke condensate and average consumption of cigarettes, whole body radiation doses for inhalation have been calculated to be in the range 10- s to 10−4 mrem/year and per person. This means, they are in the same order of magnitude as radiation doses by inhalation of ambient air. They are smaller by a factor of 10−4 than the radiation exposure due to ingestion of these radionuclides from the total diet.
