Notes: In this letter, we report the surface-mode stimulated emission from optically pumped Ga0.11In0.89N at room temperature. The GaInN was deposited on the intermediate layer of GaN grown on the AlN buffer layer over sapphire substrate using horizontal metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy method. The peak wavelength and the full width at half-maximum of surface-mode stimulated emission was 406 nm and 25.6 meV, respectively, and the threshold of excitation power density was about 0.52 MW/cm2. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We investigate the effect of unmonochromatized synchrotron radiation (USR) on the room-temperature reaction between a Si(111)2×1 surface and adsorbed NO. After exposition to NO of the Si(111) surface, an oxynitride/silicon interface is formed. The evolution with irradiation time of the oxynitridation of silicon and of the oxynitride/silicon interface formation is examined in situ by means of core-level and valence-band photoemission spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, and work-function measurements. The analysis of the valence band and Si 2p, O 2s, and N 2s photoelectron spectra, together with the Auger Si transition, clearly exhibits additional oxynitride formation under USR. The oxygen-to-nitrogen ratio, O/N, from the thin oxynitride layer increased after a long time ((approximately-greater-than)10 min) of exposure to USR. Hence, USR appears to have the opposite effect to the one produced by thermal activation in which the nitridation is favored.

Notes: In this letter, we report the measurement of the gain of an optically pumped Al0.1Ga0.9N/GaN double heterostructure (DH) which was prepared on a sapphire substrate by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy using an AlN buffer layer. At room temperature, the optical gain of stimulated emission from Al0.1Ga0.9N/GaN DH was measured to be 160 cm−1 at pumping power density of 200 kW/cm2.

Notes: An AlGaN/GaInN heterostructure has been fabricated by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. We observed room-temperature (RT) violet stimulated emission from an optically pumped double heterostructure (DH) using GaInN as an active layer. The peak wavelength of the stimulated emission at RT from Al0.17Ga0.83N/Ga0.91In0.09N DH is 402.5 nm, and the threshold of excitation power density is about 0.13 MW/cm2.

Notes: Summary We report a case of cutaneous protothecosis treated successfully with oral fluconazole. Fluconazole appears to be an effective alternative to conventional drugs for the treatment of cutaneous protothecosis. Cutaneous protothecosis is an uncommon infection due to achlorophyllic, saprophytic, algae-like unicellular organisms of the genus Prototheca that occurs mainly in immunocompromised patients. To date there is no standard treatment regimen. Surgical excision, oral ketoconazole, intravenous amphotericin B alone or in combination with oral teracycline have been reported to be effective in the management of protothecosis.1–3 We report a 55-year-old immunocompetent woman with cutaneous protothecosis which developed at the site of intralesional triamcinolone acetonide injection, who was successfully treated with oral fluconazole.

Notes: Eleven cases of cutaneous B-cell lymphoma (CBCL) were studied. The ages at presentation ranged from 34 to 79 years (mean = 59·9 years). Six patients were female and five male. Five of the 11 patients had a solitary tumour and the other six had multiple tumours at initial presentation. According to Burg's classification, six cases were at stage I, two stage II, two stage III and one was at stage IV at initial presentation. Abnormalities in laboratory data were rare, except for serum lactic dehydrogenase values. Epidermotropism was not detected, and the area mainly affected by neoplastic cells was the reticular dermis (seven cases) and suhcutis (four cases). Biopsy-specimens from the patients analysed by immunohisiochemical techniques on paraffin or cryostat sections showed CD20 and/or CD22 positivity. Biopsy specimens from two patients which showed CD 10 positivity were diffuse large cell types by the working formulation and presented as pre-B-cell lymphoma. At least two groups of CBCL were demonstrable on the basis of prognosis. One was a benign low-grade lymphoma presenting with solitary tumours, mature B-cell markers and intermediate-grade pathology, and the other was a high-grade lymphoma with multiple tumours, pre-B-cell or mature B-cell markers and a poor prognosis.

Notes: We experienced an unusual case of mycosis fungoides with the clinical and histological features mimicking inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus (ILVEN) in an 11-year-old boy. Localized linear multiple pruritic verrucous confluent papules and plaques appeared on the his left elbow, forearm and hand for 7 months. Skin biopsies showed characteristic findings of mycosis fungoides (e.g. Pautrier's microabscesses, follicular epitheliotropism, wiry bundles of collagen, etc.). T-cell receptor gene rearrangement analysis in the lesional skin demonstrated rearrangement of the gamma chain. RePUVA (systemic PUVA with retinoic acid) therapy improved his skin lesions and pruritus, but these progressed after discontinuation of treatment. Thus, lesions mimicking ILVEN can be an unusual and potentially misleading presentation of mycosis fungoides.

Notes: We report three patients presented with clinical features of Ofuji's papuloerythroderma (pruritic erythematous papules and extensive erythema sparing all skin folds), however, showing histopathological findings of mycosis fungoides (Pautrier's microabscess, haloed lymphocytes, disproportionate epidermotropism, and wiry collagen bundles). One case was associated with plaque stage of mycosis fungoides and follicular mucinosis. T-cell receptor (TCR) gene rearrangement analysis in the lesional skin tissue demonstrated rearrangement of the gamma chain in all cases. HTLV-1 serology was negative for two patients who conducted HTLV-1 test. We think that Ofuji's papuloerythroderma might be a variant of early mycosis fungoides rather than secondary skin manifestations to certain cutaneous inflammatory diseases.

Notes: The peripheral T-cell lymphomas, presumably derived from various immunocompetent peripheral T-cell system components, form a heterogeneous group of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. We describe two patients with peripheral T-cell lymphoma primarily involving subcutaneous tissue. They presented with multiple subcutaneous nodules. Skin biopsy specimens in both patients demonstrated a lobular subcutaneous infiltrate. The infiltrate consisted of small and medium-sized atypical lymphoid cells. Both patients had a protracted clinical course before they were diagnosed as having malignant lymphoma. We detected latent Epstein-Barr virus infection in the skin lesions of case 2. Latent Epstein-Barr virus infection might be related to the development of this variant of peripheral T-cell lymphoma.
