Notes: Environmental taxes have been introduced in many countries. However, few countries have reached the level of environmental taxation that is seen in Denmark today. This paper analyses the individual taxes as well as the combination of all these taxes and duties related to environmental concerns, including taxes on heating, transport fuels, electricity, water, waste, plastic bags, registration of cars, annual car use and pesticides. The distributional effect of taxes is examined in relation to household income, socio-economic class, residential location and family status. The shifting of the tax structure from high marginal income tax to consumption-based taxes, especially environmental taxes, might have distributional impacts that have not been considered part of the tax policy. The results suggest that in Denmark taxes on petrol and registration duties for cars are progressive, whereas most other environmental taxes are regressive, especially the green taxes on water, retail containers and CO2 emissions.

Notes: To more fully explore the possibility of control of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in the human S, this study investigated the effects of instructions and exteroeeptive feedback on the control of spontaneous galvanic skin responsivity (GSR). Two sets of instructions (“Relax” and “Think”) were alternately presented to Ss under four types of meter feedback: accurate, positive, negative, and control. In addition to GSR activity, respiration and cardiac rate were recorded. The results indicated that Ss receiving accurate feedback were significantly better able to comply with the “Relax”-“Think” instructions; next most effective was positive feedback, while negative and control feedback were least effective. No within-subject relationships were found between control of spontaneous GSRs and respiration or cardiac activity. The results suggest that Ss are responsive to the consequences of their antonomic behavior in much the same manner as they are responsive to the consequences of other learned behaviors.

Notes: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical, radiographic and microbiological status of implants after 10 years of functional load in patients treated for partial edentulism.Method: 15 patients, each successfully treated with 2–6 implants ad modum Brånemark placed in free-standing fixed prostheses, were included in the study. Results: Clinical evaluation revealed similar degrees of inflammation around teeth and implants. The probing pocket depth (PPD) was significantly greater around implants than around teeth. The mean marginal bone loss during 10 years of functional load was comparable to that found at the time of the 5-year follow-up. 74% of the implants remained free of marginal bone loss exceeding 1 mm. Marginal bone loss exceeding 2 mm, was found at only 5 sites. No marked differences in bacteria were present between teeth and implants. T. denticola, S. intermedia and P. micros were the commonest organisms detected around teeth and implants. The periodontal pathogens A. actinomycetemcomitans, P. gingivalis, P. intermedia, B. forsythus, and T. denticola, were found at implants with a marginal bone loss of more than 2 mm.Conclusion: Our study shows that the long-term results with implants in partially dentate patients are similar to those seen in edentulous patients and that no significant change occurred after 5-year follow-up over an additional period of 5 years.

Notes: Abstract –Objectives: To study the agreement between self-reported dental conditions and clinical findings in an adult population (20–84 years of age), and thus evaluate questionnaires as a tool in epidemiological studies of oral health, in general, and periodontal health, in particular.Material and methods: A questionnaire was sent to 900 randomly selected subjects in the age groups 20–29, 50–59 and 75–84 years. Of these, 723 subjects (81.0%) answered the questionnaire and 20% of them underwent a clinical examination. Results: As regards the remaining teeth, there was a mean difference of 1.4 teeth between the number indicated in the questionnaire and that found on the clinical examination. This difference was most marked in the older subjects. Eight of the nine subjects with removable dentures reported in their answers that they had removable dentures. Periodontal variables – we found significantly more subjects with pathological gingival pockets among those who stated that they had pockets than among those who answered that they did not (P = 0.01; chi-square independent test). Gingival bleeding was common in those who answered ‘Yes’ than in those who answered ‘No’ to the question concerning bleeding gums. This difference was significant (P = 0.05; chi-square independent test) in the three age groups. However, there was no correlation between the questionnaires and the clinical examination concerning tooth mobility. Conclusion: Questionnaires concerning oral status are valid concerning the number of remaining teeth and use of removable dentures. They are less reliable about specific periodontal variables, but can still become a valuable tool for epidemiological studies of periodontal health.

Notes: Mononuclear cell (MNC) infiltration of the salivary and lacrimal glands is a major feature in Sjogren's syndrome (SS) and its animal model, murine autoimmune sialoadenitis (MAS). To investigate factors that influence selective infiltration by MNC of submandibular glands in young and adult MRL/lpr mice with MAS, expression of mRNA encoding the β-chemokines monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1, macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1α, MIP-1β and regulated upon activation, normal T-cell expressed and secreted (RANTES) was investigated by in situ hybridization. MCP-1 protein production was also evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Young mice with MAS showed an early up-regulation of mRNA expression for MCP-1, MIP-1β and RANTES, while MIP-1α mRNA expression was not affected. Adult mice with MAS showed a further up-regulation of mRNA expression for MCP-1, MIP-1β and RANTES, and a remarkably strong up-regulation for MIP-1α. Immunohistochemistry revealed that MCP-1 protein production paralleled MCP-1 mRNA expression in both young and adult mice. These observations implicate MCP-1, MIP-1β and RANTES as potential chemokines in induction of MAS, and MCP-1, MIP-1β, RANTES and prominently MIP-1α in progression and perturbation of MAS.

Notes: Plasmas from 40 haemophilia A patients enrolled in a study by the paediatric group of the German Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis were tested by the Bethesda assay for inhibitor antibodies and by a more sensitive immunoprecipitation assay (IP) for all antifactor VIII antibodies. Of the 26 severe, 11 moderate and three mild haemophiliacs, 18, two, and none, respectively, had positive Bethesda titres after several factor VIII infusions. In 275 plasmas with Bethesda titres of 0, 0.6–1.0, 〉 1–5, and 〉 5–655, the IP responses were 0–238, 0–61, 0–786, and 43–6141, respectively, and a reliable positive IP titre was 〉 4.2. The overlapping ranges of IP titres indicated large differences in the ratio of inhibitory to noninhibitory antibodies in individual plasmas. In five of seven patients with Bethesda titres of 0.6–1, the IP titres were 〈 4.2, suggesting a lack of precision of Bethesda titres ≤ 1. Detection of the primary immune response was found in only three patients by IP assay before a positive Bethesda assay. This precludes early, reliable testing of which patients will be immunologically responsive. In four patients undergoing immune tolerance therapy, antifactor VIII antibodies were still detectable by the IP assay in the absence of a Bethesda titre, which indicates that antibodies were completely eradicated in none of the patients. Our results show that the use of both the Bethesda and IP assays can provide more accurate detection of antifactor VIII antibodies in all patients.

Notes: Measurements of factor VIII (FVIII) recovery in previously untreated patients with haemophilia A were done as part of the clinical trial of safety and efficacy of the recombinant FVIII, Recombinate™. In 22 of 72 assessable patients, positive inhibitor titres ≥ 0.6 Bethesda units mL−1 were detected by the Bethesda assay in one or more plasma samples, and the remaining 50 patients were negative at all timepoints. Of the latter group, 16 individuals without inhibitors unexpectedly had both normal (111) and low (52) recoveries during the study. We investigated the possibility that other antibodies not detectable in the Bethesda assay were responsible for the low recovery, by using a highly sensitive immunopreciptation (IP) assay for detection of all antiFVIII antibodies. Eight of the 16 patients with low and normal recoveries did indeed have antibodies detected by the IP assay, and the remaining eight were negative. Four antibody-positive individuals had insignificantly low titres, and the other four had modest to high titres. In the latter group, antibodies were found with similar frequencies and titre in plasmas from patients with low or normal recovery. Low recovery in haemophilia A patients without inhibitor titres must therefore be attributed to factors other than antiFVIII.
