Notes: To evaluate the diagnostic utility, value and potential risk of fine needle aspiration biopsy of spleen (sFNAB) in patients with splenomegaly in pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO), a retrospective analysis of medical records and cytological material of 31 patients on whom FNAB was performed between April 1994 and October 1997 was done. The patients were HIV− and presented with PUO. All other relevant investigations were negative. The spleen was either palpable or detected to have space-occupying lesions on ultrasonography (USG). The splenic aspirates showed tuberculosis in 11 patients (35.4%) and inconclusive or reactive changes in nine patients (25.8%). One case out of this group proved to be Kaposi's sarcoma on autopsy. The other diseases encountered were leishmaniasis (n = 3), non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (n = 4), fungal infections (n = 2), Hodgkin's lymphoma (n = 1). The patients who were diagnosed as having tuberculosis had epithelioid cells, giant cells, necrosis and inflammatory cells in various combinations. AFB positivity was 63.6%. The other cases which showed granulomas but no AFB were diagnosed on empirical grounds and all responded to the anti-tuberculosis therapy. No complications were encountered with the procedure. Therefore the authors conclude that sFNAB is rewarding in patients where all other non-invasive modalities of diagnosis have failed.

Notes: [Auszug] From the stars that can explode as supernova, it is only the lower mass stars that burn carbon explosively5. Therefore if the above hypothesis is correct, lower mass runaways should be predominantly single, while the higher mass runaways should be predominantly binaries containing inactive compact ...

Notes: [Auszug] This distinction between the three types of pulsars has two significant implications. First, the age of a type L pulsar is not simply determinable from its spin-down rate. Pulsars in massive close binaries are born in rapid rotation like single pulsars2, but slow down rapidly3. The neutron star ...

Notes: [Auszug] The supernova explosion of a rotating magnetised star would result in the ejection of double jets along the spin axis1, and only a part of the stored magnetic energy is sufficient to eject the supernova shell2. Since in real stars the field is usually not at all symmetrical between the two poles, ...

Notes: Hypersensitivity reactions can occur after the administration of barium products and all caused by one of the many additives. These reactions are extremely unusual. Authors report on a patient who developed urticaria shortly after a conventional barium examination.

Notes: Abstract To assess the efficacy of sucralfate enemas in distal colonic ulcerative lesions, 22 patients with radiation proctitis (n=8), idiopathic ulcerative proctitis (n=5), and solitary rectal ulcer (n=5) unresponsive to conventional medical therapy, and those with ulcerated and bleeding rectal polyps awaiting polypectomy (n=4) were studied. Enemas of sucralfate suspension (2 gm in 20 ml water) were administered twice daily for a period of three weeks. Clinical and sigmoidoscopic improvements were observed in 19 and 18 of the 22 patients, respectively (86 and 82 percent, respectively). No side effects were seen. The authors conclude that sucralfate enemas are useful in the treatment of ulcerative lesions of the rectosigmoid.

Notes: Abstract Third-order virial equations are used to investigate the oscillations and the stability of the sequence of uniformly rotating compressible Maclaurin spheroids, referred to in an inertial frame. It is seen that in the case of the oscillations belonging to the third harmonics, the frequency spectrum of the Maclaurin sequence referred to in an inertial frame is distinct from the spectrum of the Maclaurin sequence considered stationary in a rotating frame of reference. Considering the Maclaurin sequence in an inertial frame, the neutral point and the point of onset of dynamical instability (corresponding to the third harmonic deformations) are isolated. They occur for the values of the eccentricitye=0.73113 and 0.96696, respectively. The neutral point is the analogue of the first point of bifurcation along the Dedekind sequence of ellipsoids and is distinct from the neutral point (e=0.89926) along the Maclaurin sequence considered stationary in a rotating frame; this latter point is the analogue of the first point of bifurcation along the Jacobian sequence. Both the Maclaurin sequences in an inertial frame and in a rotating frame become, however, dynamically unstable for the same eccentricitye=0.96696.
