    Notes: YFe10−xCoxMo2(0 ≤ x ≤ 10) compounds were synthesized and studied by x-ray and neutron diffraction. Single phase samples with ThMn12-type structure can be formed in the entire range of composition. Magnetic properties were studied at fields up to 70 kOe in the temperature range of 1.5 K to room temperature. X-ray diffraction analyses of aligned powders indicate that the easy magnetization direction is parallel to the c axis when x≤6, and deviates from the c axis when x≥8. Neutron diffraction experiments show that the molybdenum atoms exhibit a strong preference for occupying the 8i sites, and cobalt atoms prefer to occupy the 8f and 8j sites.

    Notes: A calculation of the ground-state energy of an exciton confined in a cylindrical quantum wire in the presence of a uniform magnetic field is reported as a function of wire radius, using a variational approach. It is assumed that the magnetic field is applied parallel to the axis of the wire. The calculations have been performed using a suitable variational wave function taken as a product of the appropriate confining confluent hypergeometric functions and a hydrogenic function for infinite and finite confining potentials. For a given value of the magnetic field, the binding energy is found to be larger than the zero-field case. This behavior is explained in terms of an average electron-hole separation, which depends on the wire radius, and the magnetic-field strength. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Computational solutions to the Rayleigh–Taylor fluid mixing problem, as modeled by the two-fluid two-dimensional Euler equations, are presented. Data from these solutions are analyzed from the point of view of Reynolds averaged equations, using scaling laws derived from a renormalization group analysis. The computations, carried out with the front tracking method on an Intel iPSC/860, are highly resolved and statistical convergence of ensemble averages is achieved. The computations are consistent with the experimentally observed growth rates for nearly incompressible flows. The dynamics of the interior portion of the mixing zone is simplified by the use of scaling variables. The size of the mixing zone suggests fixed-point behavior. The profile of statistical quantities within the mixing zone exhibit self-similarity under fixed-point scaling to a limited degree. The effect of compressibility is also examined. It is found that, for even moderate compressibility, the growth rates fail to satisfy universal scaling, and moreover, increase significantly with increasing compressibility. The growth rates predicted from a renormalization group fixed-point model are in a reasonable agreement with the results of the exact numerical simulations, even for flows outside of the incompressible limit.

    Notes: Simple methods for the preparation of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) templates from Escherichia coli, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Oryza sativa using a microwave and by boiling are described without the need for any special chemical reagent such as a detergent. The microwave and boiling methods were robust for the preparation of both plasmid and genomic templates of E. coli, as was the boiling approach for S. cerevisiae DNA. The microwave procedure was only suitable for dry yeast colonies with fair efficiency as absence of water (H2O) was critical for a successful PCR. Oryza sativa genomic DNA was amplified with both approaches with satisfactory efficiency. Escherichia coli plasmids can be prepared using a microwave with a yield equivalent to 15–20% of an alkaline lysis mini-prep. PCR templates were also efficiently generated from Pichia pastoris and Ganoderma lucidum by using the boiling method.

    Notes: Abstract For estimating an unknown parameter θ, the likelihood principle yields the maximum likelihood estimator. It is often favoured especially by the applied statistician, for its good properties in the large sample case. In this paper, a large deviation expansion for the distribution of the maximum likelihood estimator is obtained. The asymptotic expansion provides a useful tool to approximate the tail probability of the maximum likelihood estimator and to make statistical inference. Theoretical and numerical examples are given. Numerical results show that the large deviation approximation performs much better than the classical normal approximation.

    Notes: The improvement of the amount of OH functional groups and bioactivity of titaniummetal was attempted by chemical treatment and subsequent hot water treatments. The surface morphology, chemical composition and crystal structure were used to characterize the Ti surfaces and their biocompatibility was evaluated by culturing with osteoblasts. Porous network bioactive anatase were prepared by immersion in the 5 M NaOH at 80ı for 24 h, followed by soaking in the water at 80ı for 48 h. The treatment with H2O2/HCl solution at 80ı for 30 min followed by hot water aging also produced an anatase titania gel layer. Percentage of surface OH groups wasdetermined by XPS analysis. After chemical treatment and subsequent aging in hot water, the amount of surface OH groups increased. The modified Ti surface promoted the proliferation and the ALP activities of osteoblasts. These results indicate that the NaOH or H2O2/HCl treatment and subsequent hot water immersion improve the biocompatibility of Ti samples. On the other hand, a high OH group concentration is very important as functional groups for the apatite nucleation orbiochemical modification via an organometallic interface of immobilizing biomolecules

    Notes: The welded bracket is an important supporting component with the structural complexityand crucial functional roles in a large-scale agitator. Strength and modal analysis on it are carriedout with the finite element analysis software COSMOS/DesignStar according to the equipment’sworking behaviours in presence of rational FEA model of the welded bracket being created with 3DCAD software SolidWorks. The conclusion is made from analysis results that the strength criterionis satisfied with operating requirement of the equipment, and the risk area of the tensile stress isexplored, moreover, the dangerous natural frequencies are 41Hz and 95Hz which are worked outrespectively through modal analysis results. This analysis process is significant for the agitatordesign. The technique foundation and method are not only set up effectively, but also the utilizeddata is provided for the product design and successive manufacturing. The lead time of the agitatorwill be shortened, and the product quality will be improved
