    Notes: Organic thin film transistors (TFTs) have been fabricated using thermally evaporated films of the oligophenyls p-quaterphenyl (p-4P), p-quinquephenyl (p-5P), and p-sexiphenyl (p-6P). The field-effect mobility of these TFTs ranges from 10−2 cm2/V s for p-4P to 10−1 cm2/V s for p-6P with on/off current ratio from 105 to 106. These values are comparable to those achieved using the more widely studied organic semiconductors alpha-sexithienyl (α-6T) and pentacene. X-ray diffraction reveals a high degree of molecular ordering, believed to be important for obtaining high field-effect mobility in organic TFTs. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have used a simple model description of single field effect transistor characteristics to design organic complementary circuits ranging in complexity from simple inverters through 48-stage shift registers and three-bit row decoders. The circuits were fabricated using standard silicon photolithographic techniques to define the metal, insulator, and interconnect levels. The ohmic source and drain contacts and part of the interconnect metallization were formed by electroless/immersion deposition of Ni-P/Au on prepatterned TiN. The n-type and p-type organic semicondcutors were evaporated onto these substrates to complete the circuits. Measured circuit characteristics were in reasonable agreement with simulations based on the simple device model. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: —The uptake into subcellular fractions of developing rat brain in vivo of intracerebrally injected [4-14C]cholesterol, [24-3H]cerebrosterol, and [24-3H]24-epicerebrosterol was measured for periods up to 30 days following administration. [4-14C]cholesterol was accumulated rapidly in nuclei, nerve endings, and microsomes, more slowly in myelin and mitochondria. [24-3H]cerebrosterol was accumulated rapidly in myelin, nerve endings, and microsomes, more slowly in nuclei and mitochondria. The uptake of [24-3H]24-epicerebrosterol was essentially the same as that of [24-3H]cerebrosterol. Ratios of radioactivities of [24-3H]cerebrosterol and [4-14C]cholesterol accentuated the early accumulation of [24-3H]cerebrosterol in myelin, nerve endings, and microsomes, and declining 3H:14C ratios disclosed the rapid elimination of [24-3H]cerebrosterol and [24-3H]24-epicerebrosterol relative to [4-14C]cholesterol in nerve endings and microsomes. The data suggest that the removal of [24-3H]cerebrosterol from brain results from an enzymic metabolism of the sterol, therefore that cerebrosterol exists in brain in a dynamic state of biosynthesis and catabolism.

    Notes: We report the characteristics of complementary organic ring oscillators. The shortest delay time measured is 38 μs per stage that corresponds to a 2.63 kHz oscillation frequency. The active material in the n-channel transistors is copper hexadecafluorophthalocyanine and that in the p-channel transistors is an oligothiophene/oligothiophene derivative. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The photodissociation of CBrCl3 at 193 nm has been studied by translational spectroscopy. Two major dissociation channels, (1) CBrCl3→CCl3+Br and (2) CBrCl3→CBrCl2+Cl, are detected with product translational energies of 17 and 22 kcal/mol, respectively. The relative yield of (1):(2) is calculated to be 7:3. The primary product, CBrCl2, which is internally excited, undergoes unimolecular decay to form the CCl2+Br products. From the derived values of the anisotropy parameter β, we conclude that these processes take place rapidly after excitation via an A1←A1 transition, with the transition moment aligned parallel to the threefold axis. Results obtained for these two primary pathways and other minor processes are discussed in terms of a simple direct dissociation mechanism. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Dipolar effects in solution nuclear magnetic resonance lead to additional peaks in two-dimensional experiments. These peaks, which have the experimental properties of intermolecular multiple-quantum coherences, have been used in a variety of applications. Most efforts have focused on intermolecular zero-quantum or double-quantum coherences, which originate in two-spin terms from the equilibrium density matrix. In this paper, we characterize the "third-order experiments" (Hahn echo decay and triple-quantum CRAZED, which both originate in the three-spin terms in the equilibrium density matrix) both theoretically and experimentally. For example, in the coupled-spin picture, Hahn echo decays in concentrated solutions arise initially from intermolecular, 3-spin, −1-quantum coherences, which are partially converted to 3-spin, +1-quantum coherences by the second pulse, and hence survive the 1:1 coherence transfer echo. Such terms require two dipolar couplings to become observable. We discuss the general properties of both of these sequences, and show that they only give information that is already present in the "second-order" double-quantum and zero-quantum experiments. Finally, we also show that relaxation and diffusion can be introduced into the coupled-spin picture in a straightforward manner. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
