Notes: Abstract. Objective: To investigate whether interleukin-13 (IL-13) can affect arachidonic acid metabolism and phagocytic activity of normal human polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN).¶Methods: Normal human PMN (1 × 106 cells/ml) were incubated with different concentrations of IL-13 (0.1–10 ng/ml) for a variety of times (30–120 min). Phagocytosis and intracellular cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) were detected by flow cytometry. The expression of COX-1 and COX-2 mRNA was detected by RT-PCR. The concentration of PGE2 in the PMN cultured supernatants was determined by EIA.¶Results: We found that IL-13 at an optimal concentration of 1 ng/ml significantly enhanced COX-2 gene expression and PGE2 production (121.57 ± 22.17 pg/ml in IL-13 stimulation vs. 73.16 ± 11.72 pg/ml in controls) by PMN. In addition, IL-13 stimulated PMN phagocytosis via increased complement receptor type 1 (CR1) and type 3 (CR3), but not IgG Fcγ receptor type 3 (FcγRIII). The cytoplasmic neutral esterase activity of PMN was also enhanced by IL-13 stimulation for 24 h.¶Conclusions: These results suggest that IL-13 can stimulate PMN and modulates the inflammatory reactions via the cyclooxygenase pathway.

Notes: Abstract Gastritis cystica polyposa (GCP) is an uncommon lesion that usually occurs at the gastroenterostomy site, although occasionally it can be found in an unoperated stomach. We present a rare case of GCP which presented as a large polypoid mass in the gastric fundus and contained cystic components demonstrable on preoperative computed tomography.

Notes: Abstract. Nineteen impotent patients were included in the study. Radioisotope penile plethysmography using technetium-99m-labelled RBC was performed on each patient before and after intracavernosal injection of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) for quantitating the penile hemodynamic change. The peak penile blood flow (PPF) and penile blood volume change (dPV) were evaluated. The results revealed that (a) the PPF values (mean 2.24 ± 1.38 ml/min) of all patients were lower than that of the patients with no arterial changes previously reported, and (b) there was good correlation between PPF and dPV (r= 0.75). We conclude that quantitative radioisotope penile plethysmography coupled with intracavernosal injection of PGE1 is a valuable method for the objective evaluation of the penile erectile response of impotent patients, and that the PPF values of the impotent patients with arterial insufficiency might be a reliable parameter of penile volume change.

Notes: Abstract Background: To determine whether vegetable fats cause a slower or quicker rate of gastric emptying (GE) than animal fats, we evaluated the effect of animal butter and vegetable soybean oil on solid-phase GE in patients with functional dyspepsia. Methods: Twenty-seven patients with functional dyspepsia were enrolled in this study. Radionuclide-labeled solid meals were used to evaluate GE. A study meal was composed of 206.8 kcal to 9.2 g protein, 45 g carbohydrate, and 10 g fat (formula 1, with animal butter: 26.2% saturated palmitic acid, 29.1% unsaturated oleic acid, 3.5% linoleic acid, and 0.5% linolenic acid; formula 2, with vegetable soybean oil: 11.0% saturated palmitic acid, 23.4% unsaturated oleic acid, 53.7% linoleic acid, and 7.8% linolenic acid). Each patient received formulas 1 and 2 as study meals on separate days. GE was represented by the gastric retention ratio of the study meal at 90 min (RR90): RR90 = residual radioactivity within the region of interest (ROI) covering the entire stomach at 90 min ÷ the initial radioactivity within the ROI at 0 min. Results: The RR90 was 0.648 ± 0.156 for formula 1 and 0.600 ± 0.131 for formula 2. There was no significant difference for the RR99 between formulas 1 and 2 (paired Student's t test, p 〉 0.05). Of the 27 patients, 12 (44.4%) demonstrated an increased RR99 from formula 1 to formula 2, and the RR90 of remaining 15 (55.6%) patient decreased. In addition, neither the patients with increased RR90 nor those with decreased RR90 showed a difference of symptoms between the two study meals. Conclusion: Our data suggest that there is no difference between these two types of fat on gastric emptying.

Notes: Summary Certain flavonoids released from plants regulate activities of soil microbes at micromolar and nanomolar concentrations. Processes affected by these compounds include induction of nodulation gene transcription in rhizobial bacteria, promotion of chemotaxis in rhizobia, increase in growth rate of several bacterial species, and enhancement of Glomus spore germination and hyphal growth. Data on the amount and identity of flavonoids released from several crop plant species form a new basis for molecular genetic and ecological studies of the rhizosphere.

Notes: To promote the competitiveness of 3C industries in Taiwan, the cold forging progressive die technology is still being developed. The technology can rapidly and steadily produce high quality and complex shape products. Moreover, it can reduce manufacturing costs and time, too. The design for the cold forging progressive die process for the slim type spindle motor case consists of three main stages. First, we arrange a reasonable and appropriate process planing for the case. Second, we use computer software to simulate the main forming processes. Third, we perform asimple forming test to check up the results of the simulation. According to the test results, the main forming of the slim type spindle motor case is similar to the results of the simulation. Consequently, we demonstrate that the one-piece slim type spindle motor case can be manufactured with a progressive die. The forming processes include piercing, coining, upsetting, ironing, sizing, and blanking. The results from computer simulation and forming test result indicate that a reasonable effectivemanufacturing process for the one-piece slim type spindle motor case is possible. The final conclusions will be introduced in the article. In addition, we also discuss the possible problem involving the production of the slim type spindle motor case

Notes: Tofu made from imported U.S. soybeans and local Ta-Lien soybeans showed a similar yield. The yield of tofu from whole soybean was higher than that of defatted soybean flake. Significant different qualities of tofu products were prepared by using various coagulants. It was found that calcium sulfate (gypsum) and bittern (called nigari in Japanese) were suitable coagulants for making the Chinese-style tofu, but not glucono-δ-lactone. Other coagulants were not desirable for manufacturing good quality Chinese-style tofu. Commercial tofu products in Taiwan had various rheological properties.

Notes: Abstract:  Although genetics analyses have identified the HLA-Cw6 allele to be the major risk allele for psoriasis vulgaris (PV) in many racial groups, it has been proposed that other putative genes near the HLA-C locus are involved in PV susceptibility and that the association of Cw6 is a result of linkage disequilibrium. The SPR1 gene, a predicted gene located 128 kb telomeric to the HLA-C locus, is considered to be one potential candidate gene of PV. Until now, no association study of the SPR1 gene has been conducted on psoriasis patients. We investigated the SPR1 gene for disease association by direct sequencing of the SPR1 gene in 116 Chinese patients with PV and 116 normal subjects. Genotyping for HLA-Cw6 was also carried out using polymerase chain reaction/restriction fragment length polymorphism. Significant increase of the HLA-Cw6 allele was found in psoriasis patients (32.8% vs. 13.8%, P = 0.001). We found that the SPR1 gene is a highly polymorphic gene containing 13 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), two of which have not been previously reported, and four SNPs cause amino acid change. No significantly different allelic distribution of 13 SPR1 SNPs could be found between the patients with PV and controls after correction for multiple testing. If the frequencies of SPR1 SNPs were compared between the early onset psoriatics and control subjects, early onset patients were more likely to have G allele at position 988 (60% vs. 35.3%, P = 0.001). However, the significance disappeared upon stratification for the Cw6 status. Haplotype-based association analysis showed two susceptibility haplotypes (types 8 and 19) in early onset psoriasis patients. Nonetheless, the significance also disappeared after stratification of the Cw6 status. Our results suggest that HLA-Cw6 remains the major risk allele in Chinese psoriatics, and that the SPR1 gene might not play an important role in the causation of PV.
