Notizen: This paper discusses the feasibility of employing heavy-ion cluster beams to generate thermal radiation that can be used to drive inertial fusion capsules. The low charge-to-mass ratio of a cluster may allow the driver beam to be focused to a very small spot size with a radius of the order of 100 μm, while the low energy per nucleon (of the order of 10 keV) may lead to a very short range of the driver particles in the converter material. This would result in high specific power deposition that may lead to a very high conversion efficiency. The problem of cluster stopping in cold matter, as well as in hot dense plasmas has been thoroughly investigated. The conversion efficiency of cluster ions using a low-density gold converter has also been calculated over a wide range of parameters including converter density, converter geometry, and specific power deposition. These calculations have been carried out using a one-dimensional hydrodynamic computer code that includes a multigroup radiation transport scheme [Ramis et al., Comput. Phys. Commun. 49, 475 (1988)]. The problem of symmetrization of this radiation field in a hohlraum with solid gold walls has also been thoroughly investigated using a three-dimensional view factor code. The characteristics of the radiation field obtained by this study are used as input to capsule implosion calculations that are done with a three-temperature radiation-hydrodynamic computer code MEDUSA-KAT [Tahir et al., J. Appl. Phys. 60, 898 (1986)]. A reactor-size capsule which contains 5 mg deuterium–tritium (DT) fuel is used in these calculations. The problem of using a fuel mixture with a substantially reduced tritium content has also been discussed. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) instability of planar shells accelerated by direct heating of an underlying absorber layer is analyzed. A specific feature of the problem considered is a fixed in space energy deposition region, which allows the unstable transition layer to develop only gradually as the heated matter is pushed out of the deposition region. The linear growth spectrum ω(k) is investigated by relating a simple analytic estimate for a stationary exponential transition layer with the results of two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations. For the unperturbed motion, an analytic solution is used which describes a uniform acceleration of the payload driven by a time-dependent uniform heating of the absorber with a fixed spatial extension. It is shown that an enhancement factor of 1.5(h/d), where h is the effective half-thickness of the heated region and d is the in-flight thickness of the payload, can be achieved for the distance-moved-over-thickness ratio as compared to the classical RT case of a strong density jump. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract The General Collective Model (GCM) is revised and applied to the chain of182–196Hg- and96–108Ru-isotopes. Calculated energy spectra, absolute B(E2) values and Quadrupole moments are presented and compared to experiment. For many of these nuclei a coexistence of spherical and triaxial shapes was found. Additionally we investigated the shape transition within the Ru-chain from prolate (96Ru) over spherical (98Ru) to triaxial (A ≧100). The results are compared to microscopic and IBA calculations.

Notizen: Abstract We examined the dependence of the mass of giant quark nuclei on quadrupole surface deformations. We find that also for large deformations the possiblity exists that the mass of very heavy giant quark nuclei is lower than that of the corresponding ordinary nuclei, leading to a dissolution of nuclei into quarks in very heavy nuclear collision systems.

Notizen: Abstract We present a numerical method based on finite elements capable of solving the general Hamiltonian for quadrupole surface motion including deformation-dependent masses and moments of inertia. We illustrate the power and accuracy of this method by comparing the resulting energies, B(E2)-values, and quadrupole moments to well-known analytical limits (Harmonic Oscillator, Wilets-Jean potential). We extend the deformation and spin regions accessible to previous solution methods which allows for a unified description of phenomena like, e.g., very strongly deformed states (β 0 ∼ 1.5) and the usual low-energy quadrupole excitations. Finally we apply this model to the microscopically calculated potential energy surfaces of190Pt and138U derived from the pseudo-symplectic model and calculate energies, B(E2)-, B(E4)- and quadrupole-values, comparing them to experimental data.

Notizen: Abstract We present the excitation function of the reaction Au+Au in the frame work of the recently developed (2+1)-fluid model. In the (2+1)-fluid model, it is assumed that two baryonic fluids formed by the projectile and target nucleons produce a third hadronic fluid via inelastic nucleon-nucleon collisions. For this third fluid we use the equation of state of an interacting hadron gas obtained within the relativistic mean field model, including a first order phase transition. The dependence of the pion mean transverse momentum is investigated to observe the predicted plateau in the region of the phase transition of the hadronic matter to the quark-gluon plasma.

Notizen: Abstract A parameter-free expression for the collective magnetic dipole operator ofee-nuclei is derived within the Geometric Collective Model. Using this result we give an analytical formula for the (g R −Z/A)-value of the lower spin groundstate band members foree-nuclei. The general procedure is explained discussing the results (energies, B(E2)-values and quadrupole moments) for166–170Er-isotopes extensively. The groundstate bandg R -factors of the isotopes166–170Er,153–160Gd,160–164Dy,170–174Yb are calculated and compared with experimental data and results of other models.

Notizen: Abstract The rapidity distribution of thermal photons produced in Pb+Pb collisions at CERN-SPS energies is calculated within scaling and three-fluid hydrodynamics. It is shown that these scenarios lead to very different rapidity spectra. A measurement of the rapidity dependence of photon radiation can give cleaner insight into the reaction dynamics than pion spectra, especially into the rapidity dependence of the temperature at early times.

Notizen: Abstract In the framework of the long-mean-free-path approach the fluid-dynamical model of the nuclear surface as a spherical Fermi-layer is formulated. It is shown that the model reproduces known results of Fermi-drop dynamics and permits the description of more low energy collective states in spherical nuclei. The quantum-capillary branch of low-lying surface excitations is predicted. The model gives an adequate description of both lowest and highest experimental collective energies.
