Notes: Molybdenum silicide is investigated because of its possible application in a self-aligned process for ultra large scale integration technology. p+/n shallow junctions are fabricated by boron implantation through Mo films or MoSi2 layers and rapid thermal annealing. Both procedures enable us to obtain junctions as shallow as 130 nm with very good electrical characteristics (reverse current density 1 nA/cm2 at −1 V, ideality factor 1.05 and contact resistivity 1×10−6 Ω cm2). The influence of a surface preamorphization with different thicknesses on junction depth and electrical characteristics is reported.

Notes: Between the beginning of the 1950s and the early 1970s, China, like many other countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, experienced rapid population growth. This was due mainly to a dramatic mortality decline not offset by any decline in the birth rate. In 1970, China had a crude birth rate of 33.43 (per 1,000), a crude death rate of 7.60 (per 1,000) and a rate of natural increase of 25.83. “Population growth” was identified as a fundamental obstacle to economic development, and the stage was set for large-scale state interventions in the process of human reproduction. The apotheosis of this intervention was the introduction, in 1979, of the One Child Policy, which was successfully implemented in the urban areas. In rural areas, policies promoting later marriage, one child – maximum two – per couple, and greater spacing of those births that are permitted contributed to the swift fertility decline witnessed over the last three decades. In 1996 China's birth and death rates were reported at 16.98 per 1,000 and 6.56 per 1,000 respectively and the population was growing at 10.42 per 1,000.

Notes: Abstract Comparative crystal-chemical analysis of natural garnets allowed the compositional gap at Gr 45÷70% in the (Py, Alm)-Gr join to be related to the presence of two different structural arrangements around the X site in pyralspitic and ugranditic composition, respectively. A combined investigation (single-crystal X-ray structure-refinement (SREF), Ca K-edge XANES spectroscopy and multiple-scattering calculation of XANES spectra) carried out on a series of natural garnets in the (Py, Alm)-Gr join, allowed the structural modifications of the Ca local environment at increasing grossular content to be followed. The differences in the experimental XANES spectra as a function of the Ca content were shown to depend only on the configuration of the ligand shells surrounding the absorbing atom, and not on the nature of adjacent dodecahedral cations. Both experimental XANES spectra and their theoretical simulations confirm that Ca at the X site, when less abundant than (Fe+Mg), is not in the same structural configuration as in grossular, but adapts itself to that imposed by the dominant (Fe, Mg) cations. In the same way, (Fe, Mg) adapt themselves to the X-site configuration observed in grossular when Ca is the dominant cation. The deformation of the X site due to progressive Ca → (Fe, Mg) substitution is gradual but not linear along the solid solution; it shows different slopes on the two sides of the observed (Py, Alm)-Gr compositional gap. Best performances in reproducing the XANES spectra were obtained in the framework of the one-electron fullmultiple-scattering theory, using the real Hedin-Lundqvist exchange-correlation potential and clusters of 83 atoms (i.e. for a coordination sphere with 7 Å radius from the central Ca absorber); smaller clusters resulted inadequate in simulating some XANES features, indicating that a high number of single and multiple scatteringpaths contribute in garnets to the first part of the absorption spectrum.

Notes: Abstract A controlled study was carried out in two groups of 20 patients with cirrhosis of the liver and deep coma in order to compare the efficacy of intravenous branched-chain amino acid solutions in 20% glucose (group A) vs lactulose plus glucose in isocaloric amount (group B). There were 3 drop-outs from each group. Plasma amino acids and ammonia were assayed at fixed intervals throughout the 10-day observation period. Routine tests were assayed daily. Complete mental recovery was obtained in 70% of patients in group A and in 47% in group B. The difference was not significant, likely due to the lack of placebo group. With the exception of free tryptophan/all competing amino acids ratio, the modifications in plasma amino acid levels showed no correlation with the clinical course under either treatment. Ammonia, like free tryptophan, decreased significantly upon mental recovery, paralleling the clinical course throughout the study. In conclusion, branched-chain amino acids are at least as effective as lactulose in deep hepatic coma. It is suggested that branched-chain amino acids may reverse coma either by competing with brain entry of the aromatic amino acid or by metabolically decreasing free tryptophan and ammonia.

Notes: Abstract Using conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy, we have studied the hyperfine field distributions of ultra-thin iron films interfaced on both sides with nickel. The configuration of the studied system was (Ni/57Fe/Ni) n =(20 nm/X nm/20 nm) n , withn=3–7 andX=0.5–1.5 nm. The films were grown at room temperature in high vacuum on (111) buffer layers of nickel previously deposited on mica substrates at 300 °C. It has been found that the average hyperfine field is practically independent of the iron layer thickness, while this parameter strongly affects the distribution profiles and the orientation of iron atom spins.

Notes: Abstract This paper details efforts to implement a demographic and contraceptive surveillance system in four counties in North China. These counties are taking part in a large-scale field experiment involving the introduction of new contraceptives, greater choice in the use of contraceptives, and better training of family planning personnel. To evaluate the impact of these changes, a system of detailed, individual-level records are being kept in the 24 townships taking part in the project. We discuss the interaction between data collection and policy implementation - its general forms, its manifestations in modern China, and its relevance for the current project. We describe the system that we are implementing - what the old system looked like, and how we have tried to improve it. We evaluate the system's functioning over three years, based on field observations and preliminary data from one of the project's four counties. We conclude that there has been progress in the timely accumulation of standardized data; but there remains an antinomy whereby, past a point, an emphasis on data quality has the effect of sensitizing those responsible for recording data to the problematic nature of such data, thereby weakening accuracy. Many of the issues encountered in implementing the new system are relevant to the larger issues of (a) correct interpretation of data from China, and (b) creating a reasonable climate for change in the family planning system.

Notes: Abstract Forty-seven consecutive patients were prospectively evaluated to study the incidence of hepatic encephalopathy as well as modifications in the PSE index after TIPS. Various clinical, laboratory, and angiographic parameters were also recorded to identify risk factors for the development of post-TIPS hepatic encephalopathy (HE). Mean follow-up was 17±7 months. During follow-up, six patients died and one underwent transplantation. All other patients were followed for at least a year. Fifteen patients (32%) experienced 20 acute episodes of precipitated HE (hospitalization was necessary in 10 instances), and five patients (11%) presented a continuous alteration in mental status with frequent spontaneous exacerbation during follow-up. Both precipitated and spontaneous HE occurred more frequently during the first three months of follow-up. Moreover the PSE index was significantly worse than basal values one month after TIPS, thereafter returning to near basal values. HE was successfully treated in all patients but one who required a reduction in the stent/shunt diameter. Increasing age (〉65 years) and low portacaval gradient (〈10 mm Hg) were predictors of HE after TIPS. A gradual dilation of the stent/shunt should be performed to obtain a portacaval gradient 〉10 mm Hg to avoid an unacceptable rate of HE after TIPS.
