Abstract In this study, a possible reaction pathway for the formation of protein-like copolyamino acids from gaseous starting materials is presented. The sequence of the reaction pathway is composed of four steps. These are a) formation of fumaronitrile, b) hydrolysis of fumaronitrile to thermal precursors of aspartic acid such as ammonium fumarate or malate, c) thermal copolycondensation of the precursors of aspartic acids with various amino acids (s), and d) formation of microspheres from the copolyamino acids. The steps b), c) and d) were demonstrated experimentally in this study. The materials and the conditions used in this study could be regarded as prebiological. The thermal copolycondensation is also a convenient synthetic method of aspartic acid containing copolyamino acids.
