Notes: Abstract Background Although duct ectasia due to mucus-producing pancreatic cancer has been well known, its occurrence in other organs has not been reported. We have studied the pathologic basis of the radiologic features in cases of mucus-producing cancer with intraductal extension. Methods We conducted a comparative study of detailed various radiographic images and pathological findings in 10 cases of mucus-producing cancers (four of mucusproducing pancreatic cancer, two of mucinous gastric cancer with diffuse lymphangitic liver metastasis, and four cases of bronchoalveolar cell carcinoma with cyst or cavity). Results When mucus-producing cancer occurs in a secretory duct or extends into lymphatic ducts, the normal duct is dilated due to the mucus and increased internal pressure, leading to the formation of a cyst and cavity. Because of having the liquid property of mucus floating cancer cells, the lesion can easily progress to continuous ducts as well as regionally. Conclusions In cases of mucus-producing cancer with extension into the ductal structure not only in the pancreas but also in the lung and liver, continuous duct ectasis and cysts filled with mucus or cavities of all sizes made by the nature of the mucus may be detected by CT and US.

Notes: Abstract We report a patient with transient periduodenal panniculitis due to spontaneous rupture of a pancreatic pseudocyst into the duodenum. He developed sudden onset of severe epigastric and back pain with jaundice, mimicking the symptoms of acute pancreatitis. However, the serum and urinary amylase levels did not increase. CT scans showed disappearance of his pseudocyst and periduodenal panniculitis without any evidence of acute pancreatitis. The CT findings of periduodenal panniculitis and his symptoms both improved within 3 weeks. A duodenal fistula leading to the remnant pseudocyst and narrowing of the periduodenal portion of the common bile duct were demonstrated by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.

Notes: Summary Using monoclonal antibody (Ta-51) that specifically binds phosphorylated high molecular weight neurofilament (pNFH) proteins, we investigated the occurrence of perikaryal pNFH in the spinal ventral horn motoneurons, intermediolateral column (ILC) neurons, sympathetic ganglion neurons and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons obtained from patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and multiple system atrophy (MSA) and from control cases. In the controls, a system-dependent variation in perikaryal Ta-51 immunoreactivity was observed. Very few ventral horn cells and ILC neurons were stained with Ta-51, while large population of DRG neurons and sympathetic neurons were Ta-51 positive. The incidence of perikaryal immunoreactivity in the ventral horn cells was significantly increased in ALS and MSA. Some ILC neurons in ALS were Ta-51 positive and their incidence was significantly higher than that of the controls. These data suggest that both ILC neurons and ventral horn cells are affected with respect to pNFH metabolism in ALS and MSA. No significant difference was, however, detected in the Ta-51 immunoreactivity of both DRG and sympathetic ganglion neurons in ALS and MSA as compared with the controls.

Notes: Abstract Multiple introns were detected in the 16S rRNA gene of newly isolated Thermoproteus species strains IC-033 and IC-061 and Thermoproteus neutrophilus JCM 9278. In the 16S rRNA gene of strain IC-033, five introns of 627, 762, 636, 33, and 682 bp existed after positions 548, 781, 1092, 1205, and 1213 (according to the Escherichia coli numbering system), respectively. Likewise, strain IC-061 possessed 764-, 32-, and 688-bp introns after positions 781, 1205, and 1213, respectively; and T. neutrophilus JCM 9278 had 34- and 663-bp introns after positions 1205 and 1213, respectively. All the introns carried the putative intron core structures consisting of a bulge-helix-bulge motif and a long stable stem. The large introns carried open reading frames containing the LAGLI-DADG-like motifs in their terminal inserts; however, three out of four large introns of strain IC-033 seemed to incur frameshift mutations. Occurrence of introns at the same insertion sites in the three strains would allow tracing of the evolutionary movements of these introns.

Notes: Abstract The Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O superconducting ceramics containing Al2O3 have been prepared utilizing the reaction, Tl2O2+BaCuO2+Ca2CuO3+A12O3 or Tl2O3+BaCuO2 +Ca2CuO3+AlCuO2.5. It is shown that the resulting ceramics show the superconductivity at temperatures over 100 K when the Al/Cu molar ratio is kept below 0.5. EPMA analyses revealed that there is always an Al2BaO4 layer between the superconducting Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O and Al2O3 phases, leading to the separation between the superconducting and A12O3 phases.

Notes: Abstract A case of a 12-year-old girl with a multiple auto-immune disorder is reported. She showed Hashimoto thyroiditis which subsequently developed to hashitoxicosis and distal renal tubular acidosis at 5 years of age, pernicious anaemia at the age of 9 and severe encephalopathy at the age of 12. Laboratory studies revealed very high titres of anti-microsomal and anti-thyroglobulin antibodies and positive gastric parietal cell antibody. As to the encephalopathy, positive oligoclonal IgG bands and high values of IgG index and IgG synthesis ratio in CSF were observed with aggravation of her neurological symptoms. High-dose steroid therapy was effective toward the encephalopathy. Paediatricians should pay careful attention to patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis for association with other auto-immune disorders.

Notes: Summary The disposition of aprindine following a single oral dose can best be described by a two-compartment open model. The mean plasma half-life (t1/2β) increased from 8.0±2.1 h (SD) after a 25 mg dose to 9.4±2.9 h after 50 mg and to 15.8±2.6 h after 100 mg, with a decrease in total plasma clearance (Cl/F) and volume of distribution at steady state (Vdss/F) and during β-phase (Vdβ/F). The area under plasma concentration-time curve (AUC), maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) and the amount of unchanged aprindine excreted in the urine increased in a non-linear fashion with the increase in dose. The t1/2β after multiple oral doses showed a 3-fold increase over the single dose value. These results indicate that aprindine shows dose-dependent non-linear kinetics.
