Notes: Abstract Recently, stent implantation has become the treatment of choice for patients with tracheobronchial stenosis due to malignant tumours, tuberculosis and recurrent stenosis following lung transplant. However, reports on this procedure in infants with congenital bronchial stenosis are extremely rare. We report successful stent implantation in an infant with congenital left bronchial stenosis followed by rapid improvement in his respiratory condition. Conclusion The use of a stent in infants is still controversial because size mismatch will take place with growth. However, we believe that implantation of a metallic stent can be the preferred treatment of congenital bronchial stenosis even in small infants.

Notes: Abstract A case of a 12-year-old girl with a multiple auto-immune disorder is reported. She showed Hashimoto thyroiditis which subsequently developed to hashitoxicosis and distal renal tubular acidosis at 5 years of age, pernicious anaemia at the age of 9 and severe encephalopathy at the age of 12. Laboratory studies revealed very high titres of anti-microsomal and anti-thyroglobulin antibodies and positive gastric parietal cell antibody. As to the encephalopathy, positive oligoclonal IgG bands and high values of IgG index and IgG synthesis ratio in CSF were observed with aggravation of her neurological symptoms. High-dose steroid therapy was effective toward the encephalopathy. Paediatricians should pay careful attention to patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis for association with other auto-immune disorders.

Notes: We have compared the NZB/BINJ (/NJ) and NZB/BlPt (/Pt) mouse substrains with respect to a number of immunological and biochemical polymorphisms. In agreement with earlier findings by other workers, we detected histocompatibility antigen difference(s) between the two substrains. Serological analysis indicated that /NJ and /Pt expressed the same allotypes of H-2, Thy-1 and Lyt-1 antigens, while they differed for the Lyt-2 antigen. Amongst 15 biochemical polymorphisms, which we assayed, /NJ and /Pt differed for four, namely Pep-3, Mup-1, Gpd-1 and Hbb. In addition, the two NZB substrains differed for the Hc marker (haemolytic complement).

Notes: Summary Newborn WKA rats given a single intraperitoneal injection of MMC treated TARS-1, a rat T cell line producing HTLV-I, were shown to accumulate high titred antibodies specific for HTLV-I. Adult WKA rats rejected TARS-1 transplant with transient appearance of anti-HTLV-I antibodies. However, rats maintained under daily administration of Bredinin, an immunosuppressive drug after TARS-1 transplant showed continuous production of antibodies specific for HTLV-I by aging. Type-C virus particles similar to HTLV-I were demonstrated by electronmicroscopy in the short-term cultured spleen cells of these rats. The evidence indicates that HTLV-I can be transmitted into newborn and immunosuppressed adult rats and they may provide a suitable animal model of ATL and related conditions in man, especially for elucidating the virus-host interactions involved in the leukemogenesis of HTLV-I. By using monoclonal antibodies, cell surface antigens associated with HTLV-I were also analysed.

Notes: Summary The levels of ten elements in the hair of 7 patients with olivopontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA), 10 patients with late cortical cerebellar atrophy (LCCA) and 1489 healthy persons were determined by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry. The phosphorus, zinc, selenium, calcium, magnesium, iron, managanese, aluminium and mercury concentrations did not show any statistically significant difference among the three groups. The copper concentration was significantly lower in the patients with LCCA than in the patients with OPCA, and in the healthy controls. The possibility that LCCA is associated with a mild degree of copper deficiency is considered.

Notes: Summary The spatial pattern of soil nitrogen was analyzed for a patchy vegetation formed by the colonization of Polygonum cuspidatum in a volcanic “desert” on Mt. Fuji. Soils were sampled radially from the bare ground to the center of the patch, and analyses were done for bulk density, water content, soil acidity, organic matter, organic nitrogen, and ammonium and nitrate nitrogen. The soils matured with succession from the bare ground through P. cuspidatum to Miscanthus oligostachyus and Aster ageratoides sites: bulk density decreased, and water content, organic matter, organic nitrogen, and ammonium nitrogen increased. Nitrate nitrogen showed the highest values at the P. cuspidatum site. Application of principal component analysis to the soil data discriminated two component factors which control the variation of soil characteristics: the first factor is related to soil formation and the second factor to nitrogen mineralization and nitrification. The effect of soil formation on nitrogen mineralization and nitrification was analyzed with a first-order kinetic model. The decreasing trends with soil formation in the ratios of mineral to organic nitrogen and of nitrate to ammonium nitrogen could be accounted for by the higher activity of immobilization by microorganisms and uptake by plants in the more mature ecosystem.
