Notes: Significant improvement in the fracture strength, accompanied by an enhancement in the electrical conductivity, of zirconia polycrystals that were doped with 3–7 mol% Sc2O3 was obtained by sintering at 1300°C for 1 h in air, followed by hot isostatic pressing (HIP) at 196 MPa at 1300° and 1450°C for 1.5 h in an argon-gas atmosphere. Dense bodies (with an average grain size of 〈0.5 μm) that were doped with 3.5 mol% of Sc2O3 showed the highest average fracture strength up to 1770 MPa and an electrical conductivity of 0.08 S/cm at 1000°C. The present zirconia ceramics, which consisted of submicrometer-sized grains of tetragonal phases and were stabilized with 5 and 6 mol% of Sc2O3, exhibited high strength (1330 and 1140 MPa, respectively) and good conductivity (0.15 and 0.18 S/cm, respectively); values for both properties were greater than those previously reported. The present HIPed zirconia ceramics, which have excellent properties, are candidates for an electrolyte of planar-type solid oxide fuel cells.

Notes: Abstract The examination of the combustion of a trace amount of methane over Pd‐ion‐exchanged silicoaluminophosphate‐5 (Pd‐SAPO‐5) at low temperature in the presence of water vapor reveals that water vapor strongly depresses methane combustion and causes a significant decrease in catalytic activity with time. The newly prepared bimetallic catalyst Pd–Pt‐SAPO‐5, on the other hand, shows higher performance for methane combustion under similar conditions.

Notes: Summary Eight patients, four male and four female, were treated with high dose chemotherapy followed by bone marrow transplantation. In the first two patients, high dose ACNU was used for the treatment without combination with other drugs. This showed severe side effects such as intratumorous bleeding on the 18th day of treatment in the first case and pulmonary fibrosis on the 35th day of treatment in the second case. Considering these results, we considered another treatment schedule which consisted of high dose ADM (100 mg/m2), VCR (1.5 mg/m2), CDDP (80 mg/m2 × 4) and Ex (800 mg/m2) within seven days. Six patients were treated with this schedule and the results indicated that two patients had a partial response (more than 50% reduction of tumour size measured by CT scan), one had a complete remission (no tumour detected by CT scan), two showed no change and one, progression of the lesion. The patients recovered from the suppression of bone marrow function after the bone marrow transplantation as indicated. Granulocytes and platelets in blood began to increase from 10 to 14 days after the transplantation and became normal within three weeks after this. Serial measurements of S-GOT and alkaline phosphatase revealed reversible elevation, if any, within four weeks of the treatment. The number of our cases is still small, but results showed that autologous bone marrow transplantation made high dose chemotherapy possible. The necessity for consideration of the blood-brain barrier for this treatment is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract Combustion of a trace amount of CH4 over Pd catalysts supported on calcined ZrO2 was examined under nearly exhaust gas conditions where the temperature is not so high and water vapor coexists. High catalytic activity was obtained with ZrO2 support calcined at 1073 and 1273 K. The durability test at 673 K for 100 h revealed that the activity of these catalysts hardly decreased, while that of the Pd catalysts supported on calcined Al2O3 were much decreased in the course of time. These results demonstrated the advantages of ZrO2 as a support for Pd catalysts in the present reaction.

Notes: Abstract A 57-year-old male with pineal ganglioneuroblastoma was reported. The tumor was composed of a predominant ganglioneuromatous component and a small neuroblastic component. Primary ganglioneuroblastoma of the pineal region is extremely rare. To our knowledge, only three cases have been documented. This case may have a good prognosis because there is a predominant ganglioneuromatous component defined by both neurofilament triplet proteins and synaptophysin. The clinical significance of the neuronal differentiation in the present case and pathological considerations are discussed.

Notes: Summary We present a 24-year-old woman with multifocal and heterochronous recurrence of malignant astrocytomas that were consecutively treated by linac-based stereotactic radiotherapy. The patient had previously received multimodalities of treatment for malignant astrocytomas in the right occipital lobe consisting of surgical resection on four occasions, conventional external-beam irradiation, immunological therapy, and systemic chemotherapy. Thereafter she developed relatively small and well-demarcated recurrent lesions in eight different sites, most of which were located in eloquent and deep-seated regions. She underwent ten fractionated linac-based stereotactic radiotherapy courses with a median total dose of 42 Gy, seven fractions of 6 Gy each in 15 days, experiencing neither any adverse effects nor neurologic deterioration. Three out of 10 treated lesions responded well with subsequent reduction in size, and 80% of them did not increase at least for 6 months, although 66.7% of the lesions eventually exhibited enlargement of the enhanced areas, some of which were presumed as radiation necrosis. These clinical results suggest that the fractionated linac-based stereotactic radiotherapy had significant effects on tumor growth inhibition and attainment of acceptable patient performance status.

Notes: Abstract This manuscript reports the results of the first cooperative study on primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) in Japan. Of 196 patients registered, 170 were judged as having PCNSL. No patients were immunocompromised. Of the 170 patients with PCNSL, 93 were males and 77 were females. The mean was 56.7 years. One hundred and nineteen tumors were confirmed histopathologically, and 51 were diagnosed by neuroimaging alone. All the tumors were non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. According to the Working Formulation for Clinical Usage (WF), 96 out of 119 tumors were classifiable: 53 were diffuse large cell type (55.2%), 17 immunoblastic type (17.7%), 9 diffuse small cleaved type (9.4%), 6 diffuse mixed type (6.3%), 5 polymorphous type (5.2%), 5 small lymphocytic type (5.2%) and 1 small non-cleaved type (1.0%). Of 21 tumors studied immunohistochemically, 18 were B-cell type and 3 were T-cell type. Irradiated patients (144) survived significantly longer than non-irradiated patients, (median survival time, MST: 19.2 and 2.7 months, respectively; p〈0.001). There was a remarkable difference in survival among patients of the intermediate lymphomas; MST (18 months) of patients with large cell lymphoma was significantly shorter than MST (over 96 months) of patients with other intermediate grade lymphomas (small cleaved and mixed) (p 〈 0.001) and had no significant difference from MST (9 months) of patients with high grade lymphomas. If patients were irradiated with more than 40 Gy, higher doses and different modes of irradiation brought no further survival advantage. Chemotherapy was performed in 87 of 144 irradiated patients (60.4%). No regimens were effective in prolonging survival. Of 144 irradiated patients, a complete or partial response to initial treatment was demonstrated in 91 (63.2%) and 43 patients (29.9%), respectively. Improvement in performance status was confirmed in 82 patients (57.0%). Despite a good response to initial treatments. 88 out of 144 evaluable patients have died of PCNSL (MST: 19 months). Multivariate analysis based on the Cox hazard model revealed that histology of tumor, age at onset, performance status, and radiotherapy were prognostic factors. Neither chemotherapy nor mode of surgery was a beneficial factor.

Notes: Summary Human (U251, U87, U343) and rat glioma cell lines (C6, 9L) were examined by the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and subsequent nucleotide sequencing analysis to see whether they express wild type (wt)-p53 or mutated form (mut)-p53 messages. Results showed that U87, U343, and C6 cells expressed wt-p53 messages whereas U251 and 9L cells expressed mut-p53 messages. All these cell lines were transfected with wt-p53 cDNA or the s-myc gene linked to the mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV) promoter. Of several G418-resistant clones obtained from each transfection, a few expressed the s-Myc or wt-p53 proteins. Independent of mutations in the intrinsic p53 gene, the cellular growthin vitro and tumorigenicity in nude mice of these clones were drastically suppressed, the extent of suppression being correlated with the expression level of the transfected gene. Flow-cytometric analysis demonstrated that both p53 and s-Myc arrested the cell cycle at the G1/S boundary. These data suggest that these genes having negative effects on tumor cell proliferation could be used in gene therapy of gliomas, which are caused by alteration of the p53 gene or by some other genetic change.
