Notes: A photoluminescence study has been made on an oxygen-containing Si fine structure fabricated by a gas evaporation technique. Transmission electron micrographs have shown that the fine structure is composed of nonspherical particles aggregated together in chain-like or cluster-like structures. The luminescence from the samples after oxidation treatment is bright blue as viewed with the naked eye, the spectra having a peak at about 470 nm or shorter wavelength. A peculiar temperature dependence of the emission peak indicates that the emission is strongly correlated with some structural change in the fine structure.

Notes: Fe-Zr-Co/Fe-Zr-Co-N soft magnetic multilayered films were alternately prepared by Fe-Zr-Co alloy sputtering and electron cyclotron resonance plasma nitridation, and their magnetic properties and thermal stability were investigated. Co addition to Fe-Zr/Fe-Zr-N multilayered films was effective in improving the magnetic properties of these films. The soft magnetic properties of these films demonstrated outstanding thermal stability, and it was observed that the hyperfine field Hint increased up to that for pure Fe-Co alloy by heat treatment. Under the optimum preparation conditions, values for saturation flux density Bs of 2.02–2.06 T, coercivity Hc of 75–90 A/m, and relative permeability μ'≥3100 (at 20 MHz) were obtained in Fe84Zr8Co8/Fe84Zr8Co8-N and Fe76Zr8Co16/Fe76Zr8Co16-N multilayered films after annealing at 873 K for 3.6 ks.

Notes: Strong photoluminescence with sub-band-gap photon energies has been observed in fine Si particles prepared by the gas-evaporation technique. After surface oxidation, the Si particles show above-band-gap photoluminescence, the band tail covering the visible light region. The amount of the increased apparent band gap (0.3 eV) estimated from this blueshift can be explained by a quantum-size effect expected to be observed in Si quantum dots with a diameter of 50 A(ring).

Notes: Photoluminescence (PL) measurements were carried out on the porous Si layers kept in the HF solution. The PL peak around 700 nm, usually observed in the PL spectrum of the porous Si layer in the air, was no longer detected. This evidence suggests that the origin of the visible light luminescence from the porous Si layer in the air is different from that in the HF solution and may be associated with the presence of oxygen at the surface. Furthermore, it is interesting to find the cyclic shifts in the PL spectra between green and orange by turning the light on and off to illuminate the porous Si layer in the HF solution. This unique behavior is attributed to photochemical etching under illumination and chemical etching of the porous Si layer in the dark. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In order to find appropriate diffusion barrier materials for Cu, the diffusion of Cu into Si through various barrier metals M (M=Cr, Ti, Nb, Mo, Ta, W) was investigated. The behavior of Cu in Cu/M/Si multilayers was measured after annealing using x-ray diffraction analysis, secondary ion mass spectroscopy, Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, and electric resistance change. Only Cu/Ta/Si and Cu/W/Si multilayers retained their multilayer structures after annealing at 600 °C×1 h in H2 without resistivity increases. Multilayers of the other metals did not retain their structures after the same annealing condition. This difference in the barrier properties of the transition metals appeared to be related to the metal-Cu binary phase diagrams and their self-diffusion coefficients.

Notes: Nanoporous silica thin films with low dielectric constants were deposited by gas evaporation of SiO2 nanoparticles in an argon atmosphere. With increasing gas pressure during the evaporation, the dielectric constant decreases, while the porosity increases. The correlation between the dielectric constant and porosity is well modeled by a serial connection of two capacitors, one with air and the other with SiO2 as the dielectric medium. This suggests that the dielectric constant of the nanoporous silica thin film using the gas evaporation technique is more effectively lowered by forming "uniformly" distributed voids of closed gaps than those of the nanoporous silica films with pores extending from the back to front surface. Therefore, the former nanoporous silica thin film requires less porosity to obtain a low dielectric constant and is regarded as an ideal low-k material. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A study was made of the structure and magnetic properties of Fe-Co alloy films produced by dc magnetron sputtering at an oblique angle of incidence. The films obtained in this manner showed uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in the film plane, with an easy axis of magnetization perpendicular to the incident direction of the sputtered particles. The anisotropy field increased with increasing sputtering gas pressure and with increasing Co content at high pressures. The structure of the film surfaces also changed with sputtering Ar gas pressure, and elongated grains were observed in the intermediate Ar pressure range. The texture was essentially isotropic in the film plane over the whole pressure range. It is suggested that the observed uniaxial anisotropy was due mainly to a magnetoelastic effect.

Notes: Vapor phase epitaxial growth of InP with halide as the transport agent has been carried out in closed ampoules on earth and under microgravity. On earth, a large variation in the thickness of the InP grown layer has been observed with the change of the disposition of ampoules against a gravity field. A microgravity experiment has been conducted on board the Technologische Experimente Unter Schwerelosigkeit rocket for a period of approximately 6 min. The growth of the S-doped InP layer was confirmed.

Notes: The presence of hollows in cooked rice grains found before in the cultivar Koshihikari was confirmed for 4 more cultivars with various amylose contents. The size, shape, and total volume of hollows differed between cultivars. Hollow volumes increased with grain volume and length before 100 °C was reached, but subsequently decreased during prolonged boiling. The previously proposed mechanism, describing sealing by gelatinized starch of cracks formed during soaking, seemed accurate for all 5 cultivars. Based on the hypothetical model of their formation, a relationship between amylose content and hollow formation was assumed. However, no correlation existed between final hollow volume and shape on 1 side and individual parameters such as flour gelatinization and amylose content on the other side.

Notes: 1. The effects of glucagon on the secretion of pancreatic juice were investigated using blood-perfused canine pancreas preparations.2. Intravenous administration of glucagon (3–30 μg/kg) to the donor dog elicited a dose-dependent increase in pancreatic secretion. Intra-arterial administration of glucagon (10–100 μg) into the perfused pancreas also elicited increased secretion.3. There were slight increases in amylase concentration of the pancreatic juice with the largest doses of glucagon given by either route.4. Glucagon-induced secretion was not modified by treatment with phentolamine, propranolol, atropine, guanethidine, tetrodotoxin, haloperidol, prostaglandin F2a or calcitonin.5. The results suggest that glucagon acts directly on the exocrine cells of the canine pancreas.
