    Notes: This paper reports the findings of a finite element analysis applied to the study of ceramic femoral ball heads. The objective of carrying out these analyses was to assess the shape design and loading conditions applied to specific femoral heads and to capture the stress fields developed when they are subjected to idealized test conditions. Two designs were considered, these being the existing Biolox keyhole shape, manufactured by Cerasiv, Medical Products Division and an alternative design with a flat top internal hole. For each of these designs, three load cases and two types of frictional contact were considered. It is shown that the key hole shape with full taper contact conditions together with the higher value of surface friction produce the lowest tensile stress fields in the ball head hence increasing mechanical reliability.

    Notes: Abstract As the temperature of a saturated porous medium drops, the water in the pores starts to freeze. Since the temperature at which the phase change takes place is dependent on the pore size, the permeability of the medium changes continuously. Simultaneously, due to the expansion of water on freezing, it is forced to migrate through the pore body thus inducing stresses in material matrix. The stresses developed and the consequent frost damage are therefore dependent on the change in the permeability characteristics of the medium on freezing. This paper deals with the numerical prediction of permeability characteristics of porous cemented media saturated with water undergoing progressive freezing. A bond percolation model is used to generate the pore structure according to an assumed poresize distribution. Permeability of the medium at various temperatures is computed by solving the network problem. The computed results are compared with other analytical and experimental results. The proposed model predicts a threshold temperature below which permeability drops to zero. This phenomenon is crucial in developing a deeper understanding of the mechanism of frost damage to cemented porous materials such as bricks, stone, concrete, etc.

    Notes: Abstract The process of healing of fractured bone is known to be influenced by the mechanical environment and the loads exerted by physical activity of the patient or otherwise. We compute mechanical fields in the soft connective tissue of the healing fracture using Biot's poroelasticity model and a finite element (FE) method for low-frequency loading. A two-scale FE framework is used to model effects of the rough bone-callus contact surface. We look at the difference the interface roughness makes with respect to different possible mechanostimulating agents.

    Notes: This paper presents plasticity formulation of the multi-laminate framework of soil models. Soil element is assumed to be an assemblage of perfectly fitting polyhedral blocks and irreversible deformations are assumed to occur due to sliding, separation/closing of the boundaries. Using an appropriate summation of mechanisms, the total plastic strains are obtained by evaluating contributions from an infinite number of randomly oriented planes in space. The paper provides a general plasticity formulation and examines various constitutive theories which can be incorporated into the framework.

    Notes: Results of experimental investigation and numerical simulations of the mechanical response of the saturated cemented materials are reported. Saturated as well as dry samples cored from commercially available fire bricks are used. The samples were tested in a triaxial rock cell at different initial confining pressures. The tests have been simulated using the constitutive framework proposed in Part I of this paper. The results both experimental and numerical, provide the evidence in support of the proposed stress decomposition, thereby questioning the validity of Terzaghi's principle for the considered class of materials.

    Notes: A new model for rocks and rock-like material with multiple planes of weakness is proposed. The behaviour of the assembly applies tensile and Mohr-Coulomb shear limits on each such plane with possible strain dependence of frictional properties. The visco-plastic algorithm which allows the incorporation of time effects is used to obtain static solutions.The model is illustrated in actual context by applications to stability of rock slopes and behaviour of tunnels.A generalization of the model to include arbitrary three-dimensional distribution of laminae in ‘quasi-plane strain’ is included. The effect of various flow rules adopted for plastic straining is indicated.

    Notes: A new framework for the development of constitutive models based on certain aspects of physical theories of plasticity is proposed. The resulting Multi-laminate model of clays has the same response as the Critical state model provided no rotation of principal stress axes takes place during plastic flow.The influence of rotation of the principal stress axes on the volumetric and deviatoric plastic strains has been numerically evaluated. In undrained saturated, normally consolidated clays considerable excess pore pressure may build up due to rotation of the principal axes only. Numerical studies of the collapse of footings indicate that significant rotations do not take place in this class of problems and consequently the collapse load is only marginally reduced.

    Notes: Terzaghi's ‘effective stress’ principle, though originally developed for soils, has been extensively applied to water saturated cemented materials (such as concrete, rocks, masonry units, etc.). There are, however, serious reservations regarding its validity for this class of materials. In this paper an alternative stress decomposition is proposed. It is based on average stress measures in constitutents, i.e. the solid matrix and water. Constitutive relations governing the undrained response of a cemented aggregate mixture, treated as a brittle-plastic material, are derived. The framework is illustrated by some numerical examples pertaining to the behaviour of saturated concrete.

    Notes: A numerical model is proposed to analyse elastic as well as elastoplastic behaviour of stone-column reinforced foundations. The stone-columns are assumed to be dispersed within the in situ soil and a homogenization technique is invoked to establish equivalent material properties for in situ soil and stone-column composite. The difficulties encountered in carrying out elastoplastic analyses of composite materials are overcome by adopting a separate yield function for each of the constituent materials and a sub-iteration procedure within an implicit backward Euler stress integration scheme. In the proposed procedure, equilibrium as well as kinematic conditions implied in the homogenization procedure are satisfied for both elastic as well as elastoplastic stress states.The proposed model is implemented in an axi-symmetric finite element code and numerical prediction is made for the behaviour of model circular footings resting on stone-column reinforced foundations. This prediction indicates good agreement with experimental observation. Finally, a new scheme in which the length of stone-column is variable is proposed and its behaviour is examined through a numerical example. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
