    Notes: This paper gives a thorough treatment of a new effect of non-steady-state photo-electromotive-force (emf). The effect consists of an alternating electric current arising in a short-circuited bulk sample of a photoconductor illuminated by a vibrating sinusoidal pattern. As a detailed theoretical analysis shows, the frequency transfer function of the effect is identical with that of a differentiating RC circuit having a time constant equal to the characteristic time of a space-charge grating formation within the sample volume τsc. For high excitation frequencies (ω(approximately-greater-than)τ−1sc), the photo-emf signal peaks at spatial frequency K=L−1D (LD is the mean diffusion length of photoinduced carriers) and the photovoltage amplitude in an open-circuit sample can be as high as kBT/e times the number of fringes of the interference pattern in the interelectrode spacing. The basic conclusions of the theoretical analysis of the effect are supported by the experimental evidence obtained for cubic photoconducting Bi12SiO20 crystals.

    Notes: Neoclassical simulations of alpha particle density profiles in high fusion power plasmas on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor [Phys. Plasmas 5, 1577 (1998)] are found to be in good agreement with measurements of the alpha distribution function made with a sensitive active neutral particle diagnostic. The calculations are carried out in Hamiltonian magnetic coordinates with a fast, particle-following Monte Carlo code which includes the neoclassical transport processes, a recent first-principles model for stochastic ripple loss and collisional effects. New calculations show that monotonic shear alpha particles are virtually unaffected by toroidal field ripple. The calculations show that in reversed shear the confinement domain is not empty for trapped alphas at birth and allow an estimate of the actual alpha particle densities measured with the pellet charge exchange diagnostic. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Purely alpha-particle-driven toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) with toroidal mode numbers n=1–6 have been observed in deuterium–tritium (D–T) plasmas on the tokamak fusion test reactor [D. J. Grove and D. M. Meade, Nucl. Fusion 25, 1167 (1985)]. The appearance of mode activity following termination of neutral beam injection in plasmas with q(0)〉1 is generally consistent with theoretical predictions of TAE stability [G. Y. Fu et al. Phys. Plasmas 3, 4036 (1996)]. Internal reflectometer measurements of TAE activity is compared with theoretical calculations of the radial mode structure. Core localization of the modes to the region of reduced central magnetic shear is confirmed, however the mode structure can deviate significantly from theoretical estimates. The peak measured TAE amplitude of δn/n∼10−4 at r/a∼0.3−0.4 corresponds to δB/B∼10−5, while δB/B∼10−8 is measured at the plasma edge. Enhanced alpha particle loss associated with TAE activity has not been observed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This paper presents studies of the H+ minority ions driven by Ion Cyclotron Radio Frequency (ICRF) heating in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [R. J. Hawryluk et al., Phys. Plasmas 5, 1577 (1998)] deuterium plasmas using primarily passive H° flux detection in the energy range of 0.2–1.0 MeV. The measured passive H+ energy spectra are compared with active (Li pellet charge exchange) results. It is shown that in the passive mode the main donors for the neutralization of H+ ions in this energy range are C5+ ions. The measured effective H+ tail temperatures range from 0.15 MeV at an ICRF power of 2 MW to 0.35 MeV at 6 MW. Radial redistribution of ICRF-driven H+ ions was detected when giant sawtooth crashes occurred during the ICRF heating. The redistribution affected ions with energy below 0.7–0.8 MeV. The sawtooth crashes displaces H+ ions outward along the plasma major radius into the stochastic ripple diffusion domain where those ions are lost in ∼10 msec. These observations are consistent with the model of the redistribution of energetic particles developed previously to explain the results of deuterium-tritium (DT) alpha-particle redistribution due to sawtooth oscillations observed in TFTR. The experimental data are also consistent with numerical simulations of H+ stochastic ripple diffusion losses.© 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Recent experiments in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor [Fusion Technol. 21, 13 (1992)] are discussed. These experiments include mode conversion heating and current drive, fast wave current drive, and heating of low (L)- mode deuterium–tritium (D–T) plasmas in both the hydrogen minority and second harmonic tritium regimes. In mode conversion heating, a central electron temperature of 10 keV was attained with 3.3 MW of radio-frequency power. In mode conversion current drive experiments, up to 130 kA of current was noninductively driven, on and off axis, and the current profiles were modified. Fast wave current drive experiments have produced 70–80 kA of noninductively driven current. Heating of L-mode deuterium and D–T plasmas by hydrogen minority ICRF has been compared. Finally, heating of L-mode D–T plasmas at the second harmonic of the tritium cyclotron frequency has been demonstrated. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Experiments are underway on TFTR to measure the confined alpha particle distribution functions using small low-Z pellets injected into the plasma [Fisher et al. Fusion Technol. 13, 536 (1988)]. Upon entering the plasma, the pellet ablates, forming a plasma ablation cloud, elongated in the magnetic field direction, that travels alongside the pellet. A small fraction of the fusion produced 3.5 MeV alpha particles incident on the cloud are converted to helium neutrals. By measuring the resultant helium neutrals escaping from the plasma by means of a mass and energy resolving charge exchange analyzer, the energy distribution of the alpha particles incident on the cloud can be inferred. Preliminary experiments to observe neutrals from the 100 to 1000 keV 3He tail produced during ICRF minority heating experiments were successful. However, no significant alpha particle signals have been observed during D-T operation on TFTR. We attribute this lack of signal to stochastic toroidal field ripple loss in the outer regions of the plasma. We are studying ways to improve the pellet penetration so that the pellet penetrates into the central regions of the plasma where ripple induced losses are small and the alpha population is high. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Radially resolved energy and density distributions of the confined α particles in D–T experiments on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) are being measured with the pellet charge exchange (PCX) diagnostic. Other energetic ion species can be detected as well, such as tritons produced in D–D plasmas and H, He3, or tritium rf-driven minority ion tails. The ablation cloud formed by injected low-Z impurity pellets provides the neutralization target for this active charge exchange technique. Because the cloud neutralization efficiency is uncertain, the PCX diagnostic is not absolutely calibrated so only relative density profiles are obtained. A mass and energy resolving E(parallel)B neutral particle analyzer (NPA) is used which has eight energy channels covering the energy range of 0.3–3.7 MeV for α particles with energy resolution ranging from 5.8% to 11.3% and a spatial resolution of ∼5 cm. The PCX diagnostic views deeply trapped ions in a narrow pitch angle range around a mean value of v(parallel)/v=−0.048±10−3. For D–T operation, the NPA was shielded by a polyethylene–lead enclosure providing 100× attenuation of ambient γ radiation and 14 MeV neutrons. The PCX diagnostic technique and its application on TFTR are described in detail. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The results of investigations of two- and three-wave mixing in thin holograms are presented. A spatial light modulator fabricated from a Bi12SiO20 (or BSO) crystal was used as a photosensitive medium for holographic recording. It was found experimentally that mixing can take place between higher-order diffracted beams, a phenomenon which uniquely characterizes thin holograms. The necessary theoretical analysis underlying the wave mixing for two specific orientations of the BSO crystal has been developed. We have found qualitative agreement between theory and experiments and concluded that the modulator can be used as an efficient medium for adaptive interferometric techniques. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The pellet charge exchange technique on TFTR has been used primarily to obtain active charge exchange measurements using a high-energy (0.5–4.0 MeV) neutral particle analyzer (NPA) in conjunction with impurity pellet injection (Li and B) with the scintillator-photomultiplier detector system operated in the current mode. While passive measurements using pulse counting were also obtained using this instrumentation, operation in this mode was very restrictive with pulse counting rates limited to less than ∼10 kHz in the absence of any significant neutron and gamma induced background signal. An upgrade to a specialized pulse counting capability which was developed by the Ioffe Institute was implemented which consisted of CsI(Tl) scintillators having features designed to minimize signals induced by background neutron and gamma rays and 16-channel pulse height analysis electronics on each of the eight NPA energy channels. Passive measurements of rf-driven energetic hydrogen minority ions which served to verify operation of the pulse counting mode are reported. It is shown that in the passive mode the main donors for the neutralization of H+ ions in this energy range are C5+ ions. The measured effective H+ tail temperatures range from 0.15 MeV at a rf power of 2 MW to 0.35 MeV at 6 MW. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract We report experimental studies of phase conjugation by stimulated Mandelstam Brillouin scattering in multimode fibres. A dramatic decrease in the threshold power as compared to that (104 to 105 W) typically observed in conventional media was achieved. A ruby pulsed pump with ∼ 500-ns pulses was used. For the 7-m-long fibre, the threshold power was ≈ 50 W, the degree of phase conjugation was almost one, the pump-to-Stokes conversion efficiency was about 80%. For the 130-m-long fibre, the threshold power decreased to ≈ 10 W and the pump-to-Stokes conversion efficiency reached 100%. Polarization scrambling was observed in the 130-m-long fibre, but the Stokes wave with polarization coinciding with that of the pump wave was a phase-conjugate replica of the pump, as before.
