    Notes: A method using a multipoint Thomson scattering system to obtain spatially resolved local emissivity is described. The method involves Fourier decomposition with auxiliary constraints. Optimum solution is determined from an analysis of the entropy and the error of the inversion. The technique is applied to H-α emission profiles from the PDX tokamak.

    Notes: Plasmas have been formed in the tokamak fusion test reactor (TFTR) which separate completely from the limiter and are called detached plasmas. The physical evidence for the separation from the limiter is that all the ohmic input power is radiated away at the plasma boundary which can be 10→30 cm inside the limiter. The 10-chord multichannel MIRI interferometer system has been used to diagnose this region and follows the formation of the detached state through a MARFE. MIRI indicates that a plasma ∼0.5→1×1013 cm−3 occurs in the region between the luminous boundary and the limiter. This work was supported by U.S. DOE Contract No. DE-AC02-76-CHO-3073.

    Notes: The TFTR Thomson scattering system has been operational since January 1984. The diagnostic uses two ruby lasers and two spectrometer-detector systems to provide profiles at two times in a discharge. The two scattering lines consist of 76 spatial channels which span the 200-cm vacuum vessel along a major radius. The detectors are gated, intensified CCD arrays with single photoelectron sensitivity. Te(R) and Ne(R) profiles are presented.

    Notes: The TFTR vertical x-ray crystal spectrometer has now been operating with three crystals and position-sensitive detectors according to the original design specifications. The observed spectra of heliumlike Ti xxi, Cr xxiii, Fe xxv, and Ni xxvii have permitted a detailed comparison with the predictions from atomic theories, and they have provided data on the radial profiles of the ion temperature and toroidal rotation velocity, as well as the radial ion charge-state distribution in TFTR discharges. Central ion temperatures of 20 keV and central plasma rotation velocities of 5×105 m/s have been recorded from plasmas with auxiliary neutral beam heating. These experimental results are presented. Also discussed are further instrumental improvements, such as the installation of two additional crystals and detectors and the installation of γ and neutron shielding, which will make it possible to measure under full DD and DT operation with 27 MW of neutral beam injection where neutron production rates of 1019 neutrons/s are expected.

    Notes: The Mirnov coil array, the horizontal soft x-ray camera, and the ECE (electron cyclotron emission) grating polychromator are used to unfold the structure of m≥2 coherent magnetic fluctuations (assumed to be tearing modes) observed in TFTR. The modes are found predominantly in the enhanced confinement, or supershot, regime, and when present seriously degrade confinement. The poloidal and toroidal mode numbers (m and n) are determined with the Mirnov coil array. The radial structure is found by calculating the theoretical radial eigenmode (based on the calculated current-density profile) and scaling the resulting linear eigenmode with the measured fluctuation amplitude at the plasma edge. The presence of rotating magnetic islands is detected as fluctuations on both the chord-averaged soft-x-ray emissivity measurements and the fast grating polychromator electron temperature measurements. The ECE and soft-x-ray systems are used to identify coherent modes as islands and confirm estimates of the islands' location inferred from the Mirnov coil data and calculated current-density profiles.

    Notes: Wall conditioning in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [K. M. McGuire et al., Phys. Plasmas 2, 2176 (1995)] by injection of lithium pellets into the plasma has resulted in large improvements in deuterium–tritium fusion power production (up to 10.7 MW), the Lawson triple product (up to 1021 m−3 s keV), and energy confinement time (up to 330 ms). The maximum plasma current for access to high-performance supershots has been increased from 1.9 to 2.7 MA, leading to stable operation at plasma stored energy values greater than 5 MJ. The amount of lithium on the limiter and the effectiveness of its action are maximized through (1) distributing the Li over the limiter surface by injection of four Li pellets into Ohmic plasmas of increasing major and minor radius, and (2) injection of four Li pellets into the Ohmic phase of supershot discharges before neutral-beam heating is begun. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The first experiments utilizing high-power radio waves in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies to heat deuterium–tritium (D–T) plasmas have been completed on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor [Fusion Technol. 21, 13 (1992)]. Results from the initial series of experiments have demonstrated efficient core second harmonic tritium (2ΩT) heating in parameter regimes approaching those anticipated for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor [D. E. Post, Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, Proceedings of the 13th International Conference, Washington, DC, 1990 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1991), Vol. 3, p. 239]. Observations are consistent with modeling predictions for these plasmas. Efficient electron heating via mode conversion of fast waves to ion Bernstein waves has been observed in D–T, deuterium-deuterium (D–D), and deuterium–helium-4 (D–4He) plasmas with high concentrations of minority helium-3 (3He) (n3He/ne(approximately-greater-than)10%). Mode conversion current drive in D–T plasmas was simulated with experiments conducted in D–3He–4He plasmas. Results show a directed propagation of the mode converted ion Bernstein waves, in correlation with the antenna phasing. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Ohmic plasma size scans have been carried out in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Fusion Technol. 21, 1324 (1992)] to measure the influence of the major radius upon energy confinement. The major radius, minor radius, and aspect ratio were varied over wide ranges (R=2.08–3.2 m, a=0.4–0.9 m, and R/a=2.9–8.0) at constant qc. The energy confinement determined from kinetic diagnostics varies strongly with major radius. The data set is less well suited to determine minor radius scaling, but it appears to be distinctly weaker than the major radius scaling. The anomaly in ion thermal conductivity over neoclassical predictions appears to decline with increasing aspect ratio, which is a better ordering parameter for the magnitude of the anomaly than either the minor radius or the major radius. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The confinement and heating of supershot plasmas are significantly enhanced with tritium beam injection relative to deuterium injection in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor [Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 26, 11 (1984)]. The global energy confinement and local thermal transport are analyzed for deuterium and tritium fueled plasmas to quantify their dependence on the average mass of the hydrogenic ions. Radial profiles of the deuterium and tritium densities are determined from the D–T fusion neutron emission profile. The inferred scalings with average isotopic mass are quite strong, with τE∝〈A〉0.85±0.20, τEthermal∝〈A〉0.89±0.20, χitot∝〈A〉−2.6±0.5, and De∝〈A〉−1.4±0.2 at fixed Pinj. For fixed local plasma parameters χitot∝〈A〉−1.8±0.4 is obtained. The quoted 2σ uncertainties include contributions from both diagnostic errors and shot irreproducibility, and are conservatively constructed to attribute the entire scatter in the regressed parameters to uncertainties in the exponent on plasma mass. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
