    Notes: The research examines the effect of priming negative stereotypic and positive counter-stereotypic portrayals of African Americans (Study 1) and women (Study 2) on interpretations of actual media events. A counter-stereotypic portrayal of an African American male led participants to subsequently make more external or situational attributions of responsibility to other African American males involved in unrelated media events (i.e., Rodney King and Magic Johnson), whereas stereotypic portrayals led to more internal or personal attributions. Similarly, a counter-stereotypic portrayal of a female tended to increase the perceived credibility of females involved in unrelated media events (i.e., the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas hearings and the William Kennedy Smith/Patricia Bowman rape trial) whereas stereotypic portrayals decreased their perceived credibility. Study 2 also revealed an ingroup-outgroup bias in the interpretation of media events, with females tending to be more sympathetic toward other females. Implications of these findings are discussed and suggestions made for future research.

    Notes: Powerful cw proton linear accelerators (100 mA at 0.5–1.0 GeV) are being proposed for spallation neutron-source applications. A 75-keV, 110-mA dc proton injector using a microwave ion source is being tested for these applications. It has achieved 80-keV, 110-mA hydrogen-ion-beam operation. Video and dc beam-current toroid diagnostics are operational, and an EPICS control system is also operational on the 75-keV injector. A technical base development program has also been carried out on a 50-keV injector obtained from Chalk River Laboratories, and it includes low-energy beam transport studies, ion source lifetime tests, and proton-fraction enhancement studies. Technical base results and the present status of the 75-keV injector will be presented. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new method of parallel thermal wave imaging is demonstrated in which the thermal wave image of a heated sample is converted into an optical phase image which is sensitively probed by a Twyman–Green interferometer. The sample is mounted onto an assembly of optical layers which acts as a temperature sensitive mirror. Heat conduction from the sample to this mirror results in a two-dimensional distribution of optical phase which is probed broadfield by the interferometer. The resulting transmission thermal wave image has characteristics analogous to those of photopyroelectric images. The interferogram produced in the interferometer may be recorded by videography, although rapid frame processing methods will be required for the full advantages of the method to be realized. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report on the characterization of the 3.9 MeV electron beam from a rf photoinjector at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator. This beam is used to diagnose wakefields produced by the 15 MeV beam from a second rf photoinjector. We measured the emittance with the usual quadrupole scan method but used a fitting algorithm that includes space-charge forces. This photocathode gun has produced a beam charge per pulse ranging from 10 pC to 4 nC, but is normally operated at 100 pC with a measured normalized emittance of 3.4 π mm mrad and bunch length of 8 ps full width at half maximum. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Amplitude and phase-modulation (AM-PM) wide-band photothermal spectrometry is experimentally demonstrated, using apparatus constructed from readily available components. Theoretical AM-PM wide-band waveforms were digitally synthesized, filtered, and used as excitation waveforms in a wide-band spectrometer using photopyroelectric effect detection. The frequency domain dynamic range of the AM-PM wide-band technique was clearly superior to linear FM photothermal spectrometry. Multiband spectrometry was also demonstrated, in which several arbitrary narrow-band regions or "slices'' of the frequency response were recovered simultaneously. The procedure shows great promise for image enhancement in thermal-wave applications, where selective target features of interest may be studied in the absence of neighboring interference.

    Notes: Amplitude and phase modulation (AM-PM) wide-band photothermal spectrometry is a new technique of excitation and signal recovery with extensive applications in thermal-wave imaging using linear photoacoustic and photothermal techniques. The excitation waveform consists of the superposition of two orthogonal amplitude-modulated frequency sweeps, and exhibits an optimally flat input autospectrum over an arbitrary bandwidth. Signal quality is greatly superior to earlier wide-band photothermal methods based on linear frequency sweep excitation. The new methodology also permits "multiband acquisition'' in which several arbitrary narrow-band segments or "slices'' of the photothermal frequency response are acquired, a capability that is missing in conventional linear FM measurements. This multiband acquisition capability has many potential applications for information recovery in thermal-wave imaging.

    Notes: We have studied the interaction of a high current electron beam with dielectric loaded waveguides as a source of electromagnetic radiation. A unique high current photoinjector-based electron linac was used to generate the drive beam for these experiments, and the fields generated were diagnosed using a trailing probe (witness) beam from a second photocathode gun. Traveling wave dielectric structures with luminal (vphase=c) frequencies of 15 and 20 GHz were used. The radio frequency power levels generated in these initial experiments were very large—up to 11 MW.

    Notes: The effect of adlayer dimer formation on the optical anisotropy of single domain Si(001) is reported. Reflection anisotropy spectroscopy (RAS) from Ga and Sb adsorbed on the Si(001) surface reveals complex behavior which depends strongly on the atomic species and the RAS signal cannot be simply related to dimer orientation. Dimer formation in the same direction on the surface by Si and Ga is shown to produce RAS signals, below the direct optical gap of Si, of the opposite sign. This contrasts with the simpler behavior observed for Ga and As adsorption on GaAs(001) surfaces. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was applied to eight commercial cultivars of pineapple, two intergroup hybrids and two wild species. Morphologically, pineapple is divided into the Cayenne, Queen, Spanish, Maipure and Abacaxi groups. Members of the first three groups have been analysed in this study. The cultivars ‘Tradsithong’, ‘Phuket’, ‘Sawee’ and ‘Tainan’, with spiny leaves, form the Queen group. In ‘Pattavia’, ‘Nanglae’ and ‘Petburi no. 2’ (Cayenne group), spines are confined to the leaf tips. ‘Intrachitdang’ is normally placed in the Spanish group, which is morphologically similar to the Queen group, but with inferior quality fruit. DNA amplification products were compared from 16 arbitrary 10-mer primers from which a dendrogram was constructed. The results confirmed morphological classifications for seven of the eight commercial cultivars, with the Queen and Cayenne groups as separate clusters. However, the cv. ‘Intrachitdang’ was more closely related to the Cayenne group. Two hybrids from reciprocal Cayenne × Queen group crosses, were more closely allied to the Queen group. The two wild species were outside the groups. RAPD analysis can be exploited to investigate relationships within pineapple germplasm.
