Notes: The x-ray structure factor of water measured under ambient conditions with synchrotron radiation is compared with those predicted on the basis of partial structure factors describing the nuclear positions obtained by neutron diffraction and of different assumptions for the electron distribution. The comparison indicates that a charge of approximately 0.5 e is transferred from each hydrogen atom to the oxygen on the same molecule, implying an effective dipole moment of 2.9 D, in good agreement with theoretical estimates. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The structure of polyethylene oxide (PEO) was investigated by neutron scattering in both semicrystalline and liquid states. Deuterated samples were studied in addition to the protonated ones in order to avoid the large incoherent scattering of hydrogen and identify features in the pair correlation functions attributable to C–H pairs. Analysis of the deuterated sample gave additional information on the C–O and C–C pairs. The results are compared with molecular-dynamics simulations of liquid PEO. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Wide-angle neutron diffraction measurements have been performed on single-phase and phase-separated high-silica glasses in the system Li2O–SiO2. The structure factors of the single-phase glasses vary modestly with increasing Li2O concentration compared to the changes observed when Na2O or K2O is added to SiO2, and vestiges of the intermediate-range order characteristic of v-SiO2 are retained to 33 mol % Li2O. The structure factors of single-phase and phase-separated glasses are identical to within 1%–2%, indicating that phase separation results in very minor disruptions to local atomic arrangements. When combined with evidence obtained from previous studies, these data indicate that single-phase high-silica glasses in this system contain compositional heterogeneities analogous to those produced by phase separation. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This paper examines how companies can achieve competitive advantage by fitting their business strategies to the way in which new technology implementation is managed. In particular, the inter-relationship between strategy, technology and performance is examined. Five strategic types and seven types of technological objectives were used to find combinations which were associated with high performance. It was found that companies pursuing a prospector strategy (a strategy based on product innovation) combined with technological objectives emphasizing marketing, image and technical development were the highest performing group of companies. The lowest performing companies were those where strategy was dominated by price competition. The general conclusion of the paper is that, in order to achieve competitive advantage, companies need to see technology objectives as an inherent part of strategy. The study was carried out on a sample of twenty companies within the polymer processing industry, but the findings should be applicable to companies in other industries, and particularly to smaller companies.

Notes: Observations of mode selection, frequency locking, and phase locking of a high-power, S-band, cavity vircator oscillator by an externally injected, relativistic magnetron are reported. The injected electric field can increase the virtual cathode oscillation growth rate and defeat chirping. The peak power extracted from the driven vircator cavity is between 100 and 500 MW. The output power from the magnetron is comparable. The virtual cathode oscillation frequency is pulled to the magnetron frequency in 3–5 ns. Locked phase measurements versus the allowable frequency detuning that yields locking agree with predictions. The output power of the driven cavity vircator is two to three times that obtained from a free-running, undriven vircator.

Notes: Ultrashort-pulse, laser-produced plasmas have become very interesting laboratory sources to study spectroscopically due to their very high densities and temperatures, and the high laser-induced electromagnetic fields present. Typically, these plasmas are of very small volume and very low emissivity. Thus, studying these near point source plasmas requires advanced experimental techniques. We present a new spectrometer design called the focusing spectrometer with spatial resolution (FSSR-2D) based on a spherically bent crystal which provides simultaneous high spectral (λ/Δλ(approximate)104) and spatial resolution ((approximate)10 μm) as well as high luminosity (high collection efficiency). We described in detail the FSSR-2D case in which a small, near point source plasma is investigated. An estimate for the spectral and spatial resolution for the spectrometer is outlined based on geometric considerations. Using the FSSR-2D instrument, experimental data measured from both a 100 fs and a nanosecond pulse laser-produced plasma are presented. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Ions from this plasma are self-extracting with energies of 0.1 to 100 keV, the extraction potential being one of the desired observables. The charge/mass (z/μ, μ is mass in AMU) separation is provided by a static magnetic field (B⋅L=1280 G cm, FWHM=14 mm) located 5 cm from the linear (1−d) detector. Displacement along the detector axis is thus proportional to z/μ(1/v). The detector is a gold cathode MCP with a fast (sub-ns) phosphor. The phosphor output is coupled into a streak camera (typical sweep 8.5 or 24 μs total) through a coherent fiber bundle. Streak images are grabbed with a 14-bit CCD. The signature of any specific ion is a straight line of slope proportional to z/μ. Since there are usually more than one charge state of a given ion, integer multiple slopes appear. Thus z and m can be found. Absolute calibration is taken from the slope of the proton streak, which is always present with our plasmas. While providing the same information as a Thomson parabola, the straight line images are easier to extract information from and offer resolution with less energy dependence. By providing mass and time of flight information, the product of z⋅Te can be determined unambiguously during the hydrodynamic acceleration of the plasma. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Interaction between a vircator microwave generator and a resonant cavity is produced by enclosing the virtual cathode inside a right circular cylinder. By varying the cavity length, frequencies corresponding to the TM01n cavity modes are tuned to resonate with the broad- band oscillating virtual cathode. Nonresonant frequencies are suppressed, decreasing the bandwidth of the emitted radiation by a factor ≥5. Measured microwave power is about 4 times that from a detuned cavity.
