Notes: An infinitely resistive/conductive horizontal bed is assumed in an otherwise homogeneous and isotropic half space. Schlumberger, three electrode, and unipole profiles are computed at right angles to the strike of the bed. The Schwarz-Christoffel method of conformal transformation and numerical methods of solving non-linear differential equations are used to solve the boundary value problem. It is observed that (i) the three electrode system is the most sensitive gradient electrode configurations for electrical profiling, (ii) the apparent resistivities for Schlumberger, three electrode, and unipole methods become maximum when the depth of the bed is 0.06 L, 0.1 L, and 0.055 L for a resistive bed and minimum when depths are 0.085 L, 0.04 L-0.02 L and indeterminate for conductive beds, respectively, (iii) the limiting depths of detection (defined in the text) by Schlumberger, three electrode, and unipole configurations are respectively 0.9 L, 6.6 L and 2.0 L for resistive beds and 0.58 L, 1.17 L and 1.5 L for conductive beds. The electrode separation L is the distance between the two farthest active electrodes.

Notes: Summary Eighty-two Asian women (mostly Muslims) living in East London were prospectively studied through their pregnancy and delivery. Their infants were assessed during the second year of life for growth, nutrition, morbidity, development and vaccination history. There was no increase in perinatal or infant mortality over the general population in the same borough, though there was increased infant morbidity, most commonly iron deficiency (in 25%), and one child with subclinical rickets. One child had a genetic neurodegenerative disorder. The incidence of low birth weight babies was only slightly greater than that of the district as a whole, but after 1 year of age they were less well grown than the population studied by Tanner & Whitehouse. Sixty-four per cent of the women started to breast feed, but many also gave artificial milk and they usually ceased to breast feed earlier than most women in the same district. When half of the women were randomly allocated to receive specialized education, with the others acting as controls, very few attended and little benefit was detected. Though the significance is doubtful, the infants of those educated did tend to be better grown (especially in length), be less likely to have development well below average, have reduced morbidity and have more complete immunization schedules than those of the women not receiving education. This study shows no benefit due to antenatal education, but suggests that the children have advantages when their mothers have the drive to attend the education sessions.

Notes: A generalization of Tarski's notion of cardinal algebra is introduced. Weak cardinal algebras, a type of semigroup with an infinite additive operation, are studied from the standpoint of duality theory.

Notes: Summary Experiments were conduced to study the ability of irradiated glucose to induce reverse, mutations inS. typhimurium by host-mediated assay. The results revealed no significant increase in the frequency of reverse mutations compared to controls.

Notes: Abstract Some fibrous composites exhibit different mechanical properties in tension as compared to those in compression. Proper material modelling is required to enable correct behavioural prediction of components made of such composites. Though the models due to Ambartsumyan, Bert and Jones are often used, there are still many unanswered questions pertaining to material modelling. In Bert's model the strain transverse to the fibres and the shear strain are discontinuous when the fibre strain is zero. In Jones' model, cross compliances in tension-compression zones are assumed to depend on the magnitudes of principal stresses. Here we have proposed a new model for bimodulus orthotropic materials with zonewise symmetric linear constitutive laws valid for biaxial fields and dependent on the signs of both normal stresses and strains, referred to material axes. This model maintains strain continuity in the entire biaxial field and has ten independent elastic constants compared to eight each in Bert's and Jones' model. Applicability of the present model is illustrated by considering limited experimental data available on Aramid cord-rubber and ATJ graphite.

Notes: Summary Complex carbohydrates in the human cervix were studied histochemically using lectins, conjugated to horseradish peroxidase and correlated procedures. Stratified squamous epithelium of the exocervix and columnar epithelium of the endocervix in some, but not all specimens showed staining for terminal α-N-acetyl-d-galactosamine, α-d-galactose, β-d-galactose and α-l-fucose. the staining for α-N-acetylgalactosamine and α-galactose, the terminal sugars in blood group A and B antigens respectively, corresponded to a large extent with ABO blood type. One exception was the lack of staining for terminal α-N-acetylgalactosamine in endocervical secretions in three of nine blood type A patients. A second exception was the staining for terminal α-galactose in endocervical secretions in about half of blood type O and A specimens. The type and amount of glycoprotein formed by endocervical columnar cells differed according to location in superficial compared with deep portions of the glands and according to location at the junction with exocervix compared with the more internal regions. Staining of endothelial cells for blood group A and B antigens was confined to subjects of blood type A and B respectively, although three of nine type A specimens showed no lectin reactivity for group, A antigen. Endothelial cells evidenced affinity forUlex europeus I agglutinin demonstrative of fucose in all specimens. Mast cells disclosed lectin affinity consistent with the presence of terminal or internal mannose orN-acetylglucosamine residues. Two blood type O specimens were examined with conjugated lectins at the ultrastructural level. Secretory granules stained for content of terminal α-galactose, β-galactose and fucose. These results support and concur with biochemical studies of complex carbohydrates in human cervical tissues. They reveal, in addition, the location of the blood group antigens in the human exocervix and endocervix and the marked heterogeneity among endocervical columnar cells in glycoprotein production.

Notes: Summary Throughout much of the semi-arid tropics, fluctuations in grain yield can largely be attributed to differences in timing and intensity of drought stress. Since seasonal rainfall in these environments is often poorly related to grain yield, the aim of this paper was to establish a relationship between water availability and grain yield for pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.), grown across 24 semi-arid tropical environments in India. We used a simple soil water budget to calculate a water satisfaction index (WSI) throughout the season. The cumulative WSI at maturity explained 76% of the variance in grain yield. This was three times as much as explained by actual rainfall, because WSI accounted for differences in water losses and pan evaporation. A classification of environments into four groups of water availability patterns explained 75% of the environmental sum of squares for grain yield. For a subset of 13 environments, environmental differences in grain number could also be explained by water availability patterns, whereas differences in grain mass were related to both water availability and temperature. Our results indicate that cumulative WSI, which is an integrated measure of plant-available water, can provide an adequate estimation of the environmental potential for yield in environments where grain yield is mainly limited by variable availability of water.
